“Simple, clean, friendly staff, quiet secluded beach”
Reviewed November 3, 2010

I stayed at Kantary Bay with a friend for her 30th for 10 days in august. There are 2 hotels, cape panwa over the hill and kantary bay at the bottom. My review is long but I find the more detailed reviews helpful.
ACCOMODATION: On arrival, the studio we were initially allocated was not great, there were blue stains in the bathtub, view to one side was a brick wall and it smelled a bit musty, appeared to be in need of updating. Also the safe was not working properly. After asking for a room change, we were moved very quickly and with no fuss to a nicer studio overlooking the swimming pool and with a view out to the bay. It had a double bedroom with built-in wardrobe, safe, balcony with bench, table and seats, living room with armchair, rug, table and double sofa, dining area, kitchen with utensils, fridge and microwave, bathroom with the usual bits and bobs, small hairdrier in room, no iron but you can request one as well as an adapter plug for your own electrical devices. 2 small bottles of water are provided daily free of charge. 1 rooftop hotel with views across the bay, 2nd outdoor pool on ground floor, children's play area, gym.
SERVICE:No complaints whatsoever, all staff were friendly and helpful in spite of long working hours. Kate, the bookings manager was an absolute delight. Our bags were carried to our rooms on arrival. I asked if I could buy a birthday cake for my friend and they had already made one for her, free of charge!
FOOD: We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and found the breakfast to be just ok. Breakfast bar included 3 different juices, full english breakfast, fresh fruit, yoghurts, breads, eggs freshly cooked how you like, even egg fried rice with a fish or meat sauce. There are may cheap restaurants around the hotel so happy we didn't go full board. Our favourites were Hilltop restaurant and the famous seafood restaurant by the waterside in Phuket town. Can't remember the name but all the cabbies seem to know it.
BEACH: Just over the hill at cape panwa is a lovely little private beach you access via the hotel tram, which we found to be clean, free beach towels and beach chairs, good for snorkelling & canoeing and never too many people so you could really relax and enjoy the views/swim, surrounded by lush greenery. Other, larger beaches around Phuket.
THINGS TO DO: Phuket is a quiet resort and you'll need to venture into town for shops/activities bar the Phuket aquarium right next to the hotel. You can hire bikes from the hotel. We booked some of our activities through the cab service we hired from the airport but you may be able to get cheaper deals from the hotel or through a good cabbie. We went snorkelling, elephant riding, horseriding, quadbiking, island-hopping, butterfly museum, full body aromatherapy massage & sightseeing all for very reasonable prices. Cabs are also cheap if you get the right guy! We highly recommend a guy called SAK SALI from outside the hotel, he's very honest, knowledgeable, didn't try to rip us off and was more of a tour guide than just a cabbie. If anyone wants his email address or phone number pls ask. For a more lively atmosphere, go to Pattaya.

We will upload pics soon.

We stayed here for 7 days and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were in 401A which was one of the best rooms as it was for our honeymoon. The breakfast was good and staff could not do enough for you. There was apparently some work going on in some of the rooms (we did not hear or see anything) but the hotel put on a free lunch and drinks from 12-2pm everyday at their sister hotel. They also provided a daily free trip which we took up on one occasion.
The hotel is situated in a quiet area with few resturants next door and on the road to the sister hotel. We had food at the resturant next door and it was fantastic, we went back three times. There is a small trips booking office next door which we used to go to Phi Phi Island which was great. The bars at the hotel and sister hotel all have a happy hour and there is another bar a few doors down, but if your after a dance then you had better go else where! Maybe Patong? We visited Patong but it was not for me, loud music, Lady boys, Massage, old men with women old enough to be their grandaughters. I still consider myself as being young, 28, but I still did not like it!!
I would definately reccommend this hotel.

We booked on the basis of the Reviews/Value for Money and the fact it was Kuoni approved .. I was a little concerned about the room quality/view from reading the few bad reviews and did e mail my concerns about 2 weeks before travelling out - I recieved a nice reply promising a "nice room and view"..well..it was not nice......
It was- Excellent,we had been upgraded to a 1 bedroom apartment with a fantastic 180% view of the bay,a balcony big enough for dinner for 4/a great place to sup a G&T and watch the sunset .. there are a few bad ,holiday ruining locations , any room number ending -40/-38/-36/-34/-32 have the dreaded wall view and there are a few opening onto a "prison corridor",However most have a sea or garden view,so don't panic !
All the staff were very helpful and friendly not just the famous ladies in reception..the room(s) were well equipped with kettle/microwave/fridge/hotplate AND a washing machine on the balcony - wish I had known about that berore travelling-could saved alot on luggage!.
It is best to bare in mind this is an apartment hotel so a little self suffiency should be applied - THere is an (expensive) hotel mini mart,if you are staying 7 days plus I would strongly recommend getting a taxi to the nearest large supermarket (7kms) for everything from drink to toothpaste, the saving on a bottle of,say, gin would cover the cost and do buy some mossie spray for the room, you will get the odd one or two.If you need medicinal things the hotel has an arrangement with the local pharmacy 1km away, see the nurse and she wiil arrange for it o be sent to the hotel or just go there...
The shuttle to the Cape Panwa Hotel runs every 10 mins up to midnight.. the main reason to go is the Panwa private beach, scenic, shaded by palms but not really swimming friendly, there is even an electric "railway"from hotel to beach - the Panwa pool is of a decent size compared to KB.BUT KB has the roof pool.....
Food wise the better dining/choice is to be fond at the KB,2 hotel restaraunts and 4 local, the most popular seems to be the Sawadee because of its location, almost part of the hotel.. but the best Thai food is to found in the tiny "Sea Breeze" at the foot of the hill or the "Keang Lay" a short wander back down the seafront to the corner AND don't forget to have a drink in the Sunset Bar ,you will be personally be greated by "Narak",mine host Russell's little dog..he -Russell that is - is a font of excellence advice about were to eat on the island (and other things).
Can thoroughly recommend Pee's beach restaraunt a 10min taxi ride along the coast road, immediately before the Novotel incredible value for money, and a must for at least one sunset..
The motobikes on offer outside the hotel looked a bit ropey, better to walk up the slight incline away from the hotel and use one of those rental shops - 200 baht a day for an auto 125cc Honda with good brakes !
All n' all we had a fantastic time and cannot recommend the Kantary Bay Enough !!!!!!!

This was my first visit to Thailand and was not disappointed. Husbands secone visit,
Hotel was beautiful, rooms were exactly as seen on the internet. The staff were friendly and very helpful.
Location is idylic.
Cleanliness was evident in and around the hotel grounds of the Kantary bay.
Sister hotel Cape Panwa is superb with private beach that we could use. Great little cable car to take you back from the beach.
Cape panwa is quiet and refreshing especially if you had visited Patong.
Variety of places to eat within a short distance.
Go to the Sunset Bar, Russell will tell you the best places to eat that you would never discover on your own because of their locations.
Roof top swimming pool an added bonus, at times there was so few people up there it felt exclusive.

Stayed for 2 weeks completing 10th October. We had a great deal from Kioni and had an upgrade to a one bedroom suite. Very spacious with everything you could need. We had e-mailed previously to hotel and asked for a sea view if possible. We were allocated a suite on 4th floor in the bay inn wing which indeed had a sea view, also great for watching spectacular sunsets with a G @ T on the balcony. Although no beach on Kantary Bay side, I have to say I thought our view was better than those at Cape Panwa. This is because, yes the beach is lovely but I was not expecting to see large shipping tankers etc right out in the bay. This is certainly not shown anywhere I saw prior to leaving. All the pools were nice, the main one at Kantary Bay was often empty which suited us just fine. Service was good, we had a broken light whn we arrived and required more pillows. This was rectified by the time we had returned from dinner.
We did not use all the restaurants at the hotels as they were quite expensive when taxes etc are added on.However we ate in Leam Panwa twice wich was very nice and had lunch in The Andaman once which was also pleasant. Breakfast at Kantary Bay was lovely with cotinental, american and thai style available. I have seen some reviews critisise the breakfast, can't see how myself! The restaurants outside are all good. We ate several times at these with no issues at all. Hilltop over the hill was good as was Jame's on the hill. Our favourites turned out to be Keang Rey by the side of the naval base, excellent shrimp cakes! Also the Indian was very good, the best Keema Naan ever.
Locally, the indian tailors near the Indian restaurant made some great shorts. Local bus was much more fun than the shuttle. Go next door to aquarium, 25 baht to Phuket.
Generally,I was a little dissapointed with Thailand,it is quite westernised and did not have the same appeal to me as India and Sri Lanka. Each to thier own.
There are lots of trips around to do but we opted to do 3 days to the jungle on the mainland. This was not cheap but was fantastic. We went with a company called Greenmind travel. We did elephant trekking, canoeing, jungle trekking, bamboo rafting an wildlife spotting. Also travelled by longboat on Cheowlan Lake. Stayed at Cliff and jungle resort and a rafthouse on the lake(see separate reviews) A mini adventure if a little scary at times.
Would I return to Kantary Bay, probably if I return to Thailand. The area is quiet and pleasant.
Only negative which I thought a bit trivial was we had a glass crack. We left it on side for maid to take away. No problem with that but we were charged for it on our bill which I found a bit annoying.
Also be ready for coachloads of tourists to descend for breakfast that have stayed overnight. Other than that a pleasant stay.

The best part of this hotel was definitely the view from our balcony. We looked over the bay and it was wonderful, especially at sunset.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and from the moment we set foot in reception, I knew we would be very happy staying there. The staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I loved the roof-top pool.

The best thing about this hotel is the fact that you can use the facilities at their sister hotel and that the hotel provides a shuttle bus linking the two every ten minutes. Without this facility - without a beach, this holiday would have been a totally different experience. However, the lush green gardens and white sandy beach of the sister hotel make the Kantary Bay a good choice if you are planning to stay in the area.

We visited the Big Buddha (still under construction), stopped off at the elephants on the way back and the night-life of Patong (which is a real eye-opener). We always ate locally, including the food stalls outside the hotel which are the cheapest option. The Pad Thai at the Sawadee, near the hotel, is recommended. We drank at Russell's bar - which is really a must for Brits in Phuket. I would love to go back and wish I was there right now!

This hotel was excellent value for money in a beautiful area of Phuket. The hotel itself was great and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The washing machine was a real bonus. The staff were lovely and so helpful. We tried our best to learn a few basic phrases, and as with many places, any attempt to speak the local language was met with exceptional service and smiles. We did take the advice from a previous review and email the hotel before our stay asking for a room with a harbour view as some of the rooms were on the ground floor overlooking the pool - we were over the moon as our email resulted in an upgrade to a 1 bed room with 360 degree views - wow! The mornings were a bit noisy outside as we were able to here staff sweeping and guests arriving but this wasn't an issue.
The Cape Panwa area was relatively quiet - so maybe best for couples/families & people looking for a quieter holiday- however there were both the resort bars & restaurants as well as several others round about - which were lovely. There were a few stalls on the road selling food - which I can highly recommend. Neither of us had any health problems at all.
Before I left I was a bit confused by the distance/ road to the sister hotel The Cape Panwa - but the bottom line is that they are connected by a bus which goes to & fro between 7am - midnight and it only takes 5 mins. The road is easilly walkable - although over an exceptionally steep hill - but if you stick to the bus you'll miss out on one of the best restaurant/bars in the area. At the crest of the hill is 'Jame's' which is set on an upstairs veranda and has 360 degree view - especially stunning at sunset.!
The private beach at Cape Panwa is gorgeous and towels, refreshments and snacks are available at the beach front and chargable to your room - so no need to take lots of money
This was our first time in Thailand so we spent a lot of time going out & about. We went into Patong with the hotel shuttle bus. Patong was exceptionally busy (even although it was low season) and although really good fun to visit and 'people watch' in, you did get hassle from shops and countless tailors. During the evening it became very noisy and - bizarre as it seems - families & couples mingled in safely with the 'go go clubs and girlie bars customers' . Overall the atmosphere was very safe and the bars all welcoming and friendly to all customers. We went in a few times and Patong was a great place to visit but we were pleased that we stayed in the quieter Cape Panwa area.
I'd read that some people had issues during the rainy season with trips to the Phi Phi islands. We had no issues with the trip itself and although the area is so beautiful it was very crowded and the smell of diesel on the beaches was overpowering - far from the serenity you might be after!! Overall the weather was fine & I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Thailand in the rainy season - it rained but not everyday and even when it did it was still warm.
We did loads of other things - too many to mention - but one of the other key highlights was using the local buses to get out & about - great opportunity to see more and get a real taste of the island which you can't get from an airconditioned taxi.. Very safe and for 25 baht pp they are a fraction of the cost. They go frequently from the Aquarium (1 min from hotel) to Phuket Town where you can get any connection to across the island.
One final thing we would strongly recommend is the Thai massage in the spa at Cape Panwa hotel - wow - it wasn't the 'relaxing massage' we are used to and uses pressure & yoga. What a great experience and the most fantastic valuye for money

Negatives: The only issues with our holiday were the ethics of animal shows/trips. The 'Monkey School' advertises monkeys which have been stolen from the forest and are kept chained whilst performing 'tricks' to amuse tourists - even the photos in the brochure show the chains with no attempt to disguise the issue. Although technically illegal in Patong we were approached several times by people with baby monkeys for 'photo opportunities' - and obviously as long as people pay for this they'll keep doing it - so sad! We did go for an 'elephant trek' and seriously wish we hadn't. The elephants - we found out - are often stolen from the wild in neighbouring countries to meet the demands of tourism are are basically 'broken' with the use of wooden sticks with metal hooks to 'guide them'. We spoke to many other people who also regret doing this trip & I'll certainly live with the guilt for a long time.

Overall though what a fantastic holiday and I would definately recommend this hotel!
