This hotel is located in the south of Phuket, away from all the madness in Patong. We asked our travel agent Andaman Sky to recommend us somewhere good to stay and this was the place we ended up at – the first place we were recommended was Mom Tri’s, which we really liked the look of, but which was full. This was the most luxurious of the 3 resorts we stayed at in our 2 week holiday and was a great way to finish up the holiday. Thanks to the resort for a great stay and to Andaman Sky for making it all happen – again (this was our second tour with the same company within 12 months).

We spent a week at Kantary Bay between 1st and 8th January 2014. We arrived, having had a less than satisfactory experience at their sister hotel, Kantary Hills in Chiang Mai, which I have reviewed separately. Our stay at Kantary Bay was in complete contrast to the Chiang Mai hotel.

We arrived to a warm welcome and a cold drink before being shown to our room. We had requested, and were very pleased to have been given a high floor room with a sea view that other reviewers on here had recommended. The room was large, with a separate lounge/kitchen area and an enormous bathroom. The balcony had plenty of room for a table, two chairs, and a bench. The views to the sea and of the sunsets were superb.

The bedrooms had two single beds pushed together- I would have preferred a double, but do appreciate that it is more flexible for the hotel to have the two singles arrangement. There was a fold-up bed in the lounge area when we arrived, and the bell boy took this away immediately when we said that we would not need it. The rooms, and the buildings are starting to look slightly dated, but were kept immaculately clean throughout our stay. Likewise, with the pool and other public areas.

Service in the hotel was great. Staff were warm and attentive, always looking to help if you had a question or wanted something. The breakfasts were good with a wide variety of things to choose from. We did not eat in the hotel as there were a wide variety of restaurants within close walking distance.

We tended to use the rooftop pool if we were having a "pool day" as it was very quiet and there were never any children up there during our stay- they tended to use the main pool area. However, we preferred to use the beach at Cape Panwa hotel, making the short trip up the steep hill using the regular free shuttle bus between the two hotels. The beach there was very good, although there was often a lot of rubbish on the sand which staff worked to get rid of. We had lunch at the beach bar a couple of times. It was not expensive by European standards (around £12-13) for two for light lunch with a beer, but more than dining at the bottom of the hill where one could have a bigger and tastier lunch for around £6-£8 for two.

We ate several times at the Timber Hut which is at the curve of the road that leads away from the hotel- everything there was generally good and fresh and excellent value for money. We also ate a couple of times at Sawasdee which is right next to the hotel, at the Live India restaurant, and at the Thai restaurant at the top of the hill beyond the Family Mart supermarket. No complaints about any of these. We also had very good massages at the Lotus massage parlour, which is right next to the Live India restaurant (less than five minutes away from the hotel). There is a mini-mart right next to the hotel, but it worth walking an extra few minutes to the Family Mart (come out of the hotel, turn right and walk about 5-10 mins to get to it) which is significantly better value.

The hotel is located in the south, away from the crowds of Patong and Phuket Town. That makes it peaceful and relaxing, though by no means dull and does not tie you to the hotel. There is plenty of choice in terms of places to eat and drink, though obviously not as extensive as elsewhere. If you want relaxation, then this is the place. If you want more nightlife such as clubs etc. then you are probably better of in Patong.

Our pick up time on the day we left was 4.15pm, so I enquired about a late check out. I was delighted to be told we could have our room until 2pm at no additional cost- it was the icing on the cake of a wonderful stay. I would recommend this place highly.

Room Tip: High floor room with a seaview

This is our fourth visit to Kantary Bay and based on this, it is clear that we really enjoy staying here. The staff and accommodation makes this hotel brilliant because the staff here cannot do enough for you and the accommodation is very spacious, however, the hotel would benefit from their workshop for repairs, being relocated from the ground floor pool area, to an alternative location where customers are not subjected daily to hammering and drilling. We were also a little disappointed to see that the Clock house had closed down and the facilities at its sister hotel, Cape Panwa seem to be enhanced, while the facilities at Kantary Bay seem to be reduced. If you are looking for great accommodation, great staff and willing to travel up (free of charge by hotel transport) to the sister hotel for your facilities, then Kantary Bay Hotel is for you.

This brilliant hotel was exactly how it was described!
The hotel staff were brilliant, polite and very helpful. The reception staff would great you now matter how many times you went anywhere near them. the whole hotel was spotlessly clean. you would struggle to find a way word leaf!
The room we had (430) was basic standard but had everything you needed, inc small fridge, the safe was free of charge in the room. sea views were absolutely breathtaking. take binoculars!!!
Breakfast was everything you needed form toast to the fresh cooked omelettes, fruit and yogurts. polite restaurant staff and chefs.
Swimming pools - outside reception - very clean and enough sunbeds without having to get up early to put your towels down. ( towels provided every where you go around the hotel)
Tip - get your cold beers and soft drinks from the little fridge near reception (cheaper than the supermarket) 10 baht for soft drinks & 35 baht for a beer. brilliant idea that all hotels should do!!
The roof top pool- well i have never seen veiws like this before! agian ample sunbeds and free towels( just needs a frigde or small bar to buy drinks from! watch the sunsets- stunning!
room - we stayed in the old side. spotless! and ample size. small balcony, as i have said view was spectacular. if you struggle with steps then ask for floor 3, there is a lift, but it stops at 3rd.
floor. if you are in the newer side of this hotel, ask for higher floor. the higher the floor the better the sea view. dont forget the amount of steps though( no lifts on the new side)
the weather was well - HOT we saw the temp gauge reach 104 f in the shade.
restaurants -
uncle nans italian. our only complaint about this hotel! we were simply ignored for around 10 mins by all staff until eventually the waiter came over and told us it was fully booked.
after a complaint to the manager the next day we got a table for the following evening. food was ok, nothing to complain about. bit pricey if you went for the veal!!
fish restaurant/BBQ (forgot the name)
excellent choice of fresh seafood and fish, freshly cooked served with whatever you want! check the price of the raw fish before you order! still good value though. and very good service.
Cape Panwa Hotel
The shuttle bus takes you there every 10-15mins ( use it! the hill road is insane)
The restaurants were nice and provided good service. a little bit more expensive, but no complaints from us!
the beach - well i dont think we have ever been asked to not take the sunbeds onto the beach? we were asked to bring them back into the required area. no one could tell us why this was? strange! anyway even if you did mange to get a bed in the sun ( lots of tress shading the sun) you would not be there long as the sun went behind the hill at around 3.30pm.
the beach bar was good and provided everything you needed during the day. again towels are at the beach side to use.
Once you ate dinner there is very little to do in the panwa cape area. of course you could get drinks in all the restaurants, but it was very quiet everywhere.
Make sure you use the happy hours in both kantary and cape panwa hotel -6.30-7.30 in dolphin bar & otters bar & 9.30 -10.30 in the lighthouse bar(cape panwa) thanks Simon in the lighthouse bar for looking after us!!
Use the shuttle bus to go into patong. it was mad, funny and busy but glad we went to see it.
New years Eve Gala dinner - was fab!!!!!! great evening.
Go to the aquarium!! We enjoyed it anyway.
restaurants around the hotel- didnt find a bad one. brilliant value.

Room Tip: higher floor - better views. but don't forget the steps!

We arrived late and the search to find us a room without my having to climb loads of steps went on for quite a long time, so be warned if steps are a problem as there are a lot! Anyway they actually upgraded us to a one bedroomed apt which was really nice in an annex with a lift but you could still walk through to main building for breakfast which was very good. We were there four days but unfortunately caught the tail end of a typhoon so had torrential rain which actually put the electricity out one day for quite a while and this is when you wonder why you came all this was when without the sunshine it is really hard to find anything at all to do and dining out is very limited. I think they rely too much on the shuttle to sister hotel to entertain the guests. Could do with upgrading and we never saw anyone in the bar or restaurant.
