“4 Star Hotel with 5 Star Pool”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2012

We picked Radisson Blu based on the pictures of its pool (we weren't disappointed!) and paid for a sea-facing room with breakfast included, and were pleasantly surprised by an upgrade to a very spacious pool villa! We were worried at first that the weather (early May) wouldn't hold up, but it only drizzled once when we were there and poured one night when we were sleeping - making it perfect for lounging by the pool on most days and kayaking (free) around the bay. The hotel itself was standard 4 star quality, I felt it could do with a bit of renovation. Our villa was HUGE and had a small pool and patio and a large in-door bathtub on top of the separate indoor shower, and outdoor shower. Our room had a DVD player and you can loan DVDs for free from the reception. Breakfast was standard as well, but the fresh coconuts were a nice touch. The beach was in a bay so there isn't much circulation of the water so if you pick it for the beach, you'll be disappointed (best to take a day trip out to bamboo island!). Cape Panwa is also a bit of a distance from Phuket town (30 mins; there's a free shuttle that leaves twice a day), and the airport (45 mins), and there weren't a lot of restaurants around to choose from although we tried Sawasdee and Laem Panwa restaurant once each and they both served authentic Thai food at an affordable price. Staff at the hotel were accommodating but didn't really go out of the way like some higher end hotels (so i guess you get what you paid for), although the pool boy did help us to lay our towels when we were at the pool. Overall Cape Panwa is perfect if you wish to get away from the madding crowd, and Rad Blu is great if you don't wish to stay budget or pay USD$300/night at a boutique hotel.

We recently went away for a first family trip with our 2 year old and picked Radisson Blu as it was away from the hustle and bustle from the likes of Patong.

Positives:-
Firstly, I loved being away from the business of Phuket and enjoyed my quiet stay at the Panwa Beach area. Beach was good enough considering it was pretty private and there was always security watching the surrounding to ensure street sellers came in. My son enjoyed wading in the beach, catching sight of crabs and small fishes.

We stayed in the Pool Villa (was upgraded so thanks to Radisson Blu) and enjoyed our 5 nights there.
Pool Villa was great for us as it meant not having to lug around floats, swim toys to get to the main pool and bubba enjoyed it thoroughly.

We got sucked into Talay Spa...we tried it as a one off but came back as it was on a 20% discount before 3pm as it was pretty good. After which when you try other cheaper alternatives, you just wanted to return to Talay Spa.

The kids club at the resort was good but it has a musky smell which hits you when you first walk in but grows on you after. It was a good place to bring little ones to expend their enegry after breakfast or spending the hour away.

Negatives:-
Housekeeping was not up to bar. My husband worked in the hotel industry before and he did admit that most times, housekeeping will change the sheets every 2 nights (which I thought was fair considering the "Green Campagin" that most hotels have). They did not change the sheets for us and I had to request that it be done as it got grubby with the little one.

Housekeeping could be more thorough as well. There was hair from previous guests stuck in the shower but I ignored it as it was not my priority to ring and get it sorted. Husband said they will take care of it after one night but it was still there the next day. In the end, he took care of it himself.

As per other reviews, the food at the hotel can be greatly improved (we had room service once and it was forgettable). We mostly had our meals at Tree Tops or down towards Panwa Village which was 15 mins walk away (20-25 with a toddler in tow).

Service at the restaurant at breakfast was hit and miss at times. When they were not busy, they were very attentive. But over the weekend, when there seemed to be more tourists, the attentiveness was not just there and the staff looked stress. I had a chair left behind me sitting there for 10 mins blocking everyone walking past, no one took notice. Hubby once again had to signal for assistance to remove it.

The bed that we had seems to sink into the middle bit but it was not soft. Still managed to have a good night's rest. Would think housekeeping management would keep an eye on things and maybe swop the bed around (like what we are supposed to do even at home to prevent the 'sinking' look).

Did not see managment walking around much (you can tell who is management) and I think their presence could help lift the standards of service. It is always good for guests to be able to see not just the front line personnel but those managing the hotel in general.

Overall, I personally would return as I loved the quietness of the hotel. My husband would like to look at other options though. But am sure if they improved those points mentioned above, he will give it another shot!

Room Tip: We loved the pool villa and could not imagine not being in one if we returned.

We decided to get away from Bangkok and enjoyed the moment we arrived at Phuket airport. A very friendly welcome by an airport representative, taking care of our luggage and escorting us to our limousine. A smooth 40 minutes drive, followed by another warm welcome at the resort.

The extra money we paid for a Seaview Pool Villa is worth the money and my son especially enjoyed the over-sized bathtub. Rain shower fantastic, also the bed and quality of linen. Nice terrace overlooking the sea and the private swimming pool a delight after a day of Phuket exploring.

All staff very helpful and friendly, especially my son is already asking to go back again. Breakfast is ok, but got to know that they revamp their entire restaurant and bar concepts and am therefore very much looking forward going back.

Thanks.

Very disappointed with this hotel. I have travelled extensively throughout Asia this past year and stayed in a myriad of hotels and this was by far the worst for a five star hotel in terms of service.
Hotel itself was beautiful, stayed in a junior suite for 8 days. View from the room across the bay was good especiallly watching the cruise ships coming into Port Phuket,
Several things really marred my stay.
One was the food. Ordered room service on several occasions. I love a good satay and was looking forward to it but the chicken came cold and it was a struggle to get off the skewer it was so overcooked, Satay sauce was tasteless. The rest of the food was average to say the least. Thought maybe they were having an off day and gave them the benefit of the doubt until the next time I ate at the hotel. Same thing,
Gave up and then started eating at the little restuarants down near the naval base which were excellent,
Pool bar service was non- existant when you were in the pool. Problem is there are two levels. All the staff congregated at the top level and they couldn't actually see you when you were in the pool. Waited and waited and eventually each time I wanted a drink had to yell to try and get their attention, I got out of the pool at one stage and counted 5 bar staff all there chatting away to each other at the top bar.
Another time on the night of my husbands birthday we were dressed to go out for dinner and thought we would have a quick drink at the pool bar area. Whilst seated at the table the waiter came with a tray of drinks and lost balance of the tray and I ended up wearing the cocktails from my neck down. Had to ask for a wet cloth to wipe myself off. I know it was an accident but there was no offer to launder my dress I had to go back up to the room and soak it for a day in the bath to get the stains out!
Daily room service was hit and miss. Some days you got full service other days all they did was make the bed and empty the bins.
We chose this hotel because we wanted a romantic week away from it all, So if you are after a quiet location with not very much to do than swim in the pool all day the area of Cape Panwa is excellent. If you are after shopping and markets stay elsewhere in an area such as Karon.

Room Tip: Junior suites good value.

Just returned from 10 days in Panwa Bay. Overall, we had a good experience - we came for relaxation and having visited Patong for a night's so-called 'entertainment' we were very relieved to be staying in such a quiet and relaxing part of the island.

Yes, the beach was not as good as some of the other beaches on the island, but when the tide was in it was picture perfect (when it was out, it was more swamp looking!). However it meant that we made the most of the pool area and there are no end of boat trips and taxis to take you to better beaches on the island if that's what you want. Just make sure you take a taxi from the friendly guys outside Tree Tops over the road, who are much cheaper and more personable than the hotel taxi service.

Our biggest reflection was that the hotel didn't really hit the 5* mark - more of a 4* in terms of service and state of the premises. While on the surface the hotel looked very stylish, on closer look there were many things that could - and should - have been better:
- Rooms were slightly grubby (the door to our room was covered in fingerprints, as was the patio doors and table
- Our bath was not cleaned daily - we had to do it ourselves with flannels and no cleaning product!
- The bedlinen was not changed whilst we were there (the beds were made neatly every day, but no fresh laundry, and in 40 degree heat new sheets are a necessity!
- Repairs around the hotel weren't done, e.g. chips to the stairways, pool edges, loose planks by the swimming pool steps (I am currently nursing a sore twisted ankle!). It felt a little like it was a resort just past its best.
- Taking into account the sporadic windy/wet weather, the sweeping/mopping of the outside areas wasn't kept on top of - despite many staff being on hand
- Service was good, but often taking the relaxed island approach to the extreme (we ordered lunch one day, the waiter 'forgot' to process it; when food was delivered to the Edge Bar, the staff would often stand around talking while it was sat on the side; you could spend 10 mins at the pool side part of the Edge Bar waiting to be served while staff were chatting on the other side; we only had sporadic offers of drinks while spending all day every day by the pool - in a 5* hotel this service should be standard practice
- There was a board listing 'daily activities' but no indication as to where these were taking place (despite 8 or so daily activities, we only ever saw volleyball late in the afternoon... mainly consisting of hotel staff!)
- The hotel could have done more about the mosquitos around the hotel - 'fogging' on one day didn't really make an impact and we - along with most of the other residents - were covered in bites for the duration of the holiday
- The restaurant and food offering in the hotel could be drastically improved. Breakfast was adequate and offered plenty of choice - and was included in our package. However lunch/dinner at Aqua and the Edge was over priced for poor quality. Given how cheap - and good - food in Asia generally is, it was a disappointment for the standard of food not to be better given it was circa 3 times the price of any local restaurants - and the lack of any diners at both lunch and dinner was reflective of this (we were the only diners on our first night in Aqua, and the numbers only marginally improved - one night we spotted around 10 full tables... not a lot for a hotel with a few hundred guests). We would definitely recommend heading over the road to 'Curry Night' for the best curry outside of Brick Lane or Tree Tops for friendly local service at lunch or dinner.
- We were in one of the sea view rooms at the side of the main part of the resort. This was not such an issue, apart from the frequent smell of sewage when walking to and from the main areas! It also seemed to be where they put couples - and we had to complain to the reception staff after a third night of (bad!) music being played on a neighbouring balcony and being woken up by the same couple at 2am in the morning when they stumbled in drunk... quite out of keeping for the resort, which on the whole seems to be asleep by 10pm!
- Our last 'negative' - which the hotel can't really help but which we would want to point out is the number of arrogant Russians at the hotel. We felt really bad for the staff who had to endure their attitude. Personally, in spite of everything above, it would be this that would stop us from coming again!

On the plus side, the staff were very friendly and always keen to help when you pointed out any issues - the main towel attendant by the pool was always really helpful, putting umbrellas up and providing a daily commentary on the weather! The Spa was also lovely and very relaxing - we spent a lovely morning being pampered from head to toe. Overall we did have a very good holiday - hence awarding this 4* - but the gripes listed above stopped us from giving 5*. A shame as with the right management, this hotel does have the ability to be a 5* resort.

Room Tip: Take a pool villa... they looked blissful! Just take plenty of Deet spray to ward of the mozzies as...

We booked this hotel as we were offered a really good rate through Wot If. We chose a Junior Suite and were more than happy with the accommodation and the view from the room was magnificent. The buffet breakfast offers a large variety of food and the level of service provided by the staff is exceptional. Being in a quiet area of Phuket, this Resort offers everything for a relaxing holiday. It would even be worth paying full price!!

Room Tip: We chose a Junior Suite and were really happy with the extra space this room provided. The view alo...

This is a very stylish and fantastic hotel in a quiet part of phuket. We stayed for 7 days with a special offer from Hotels.com and paid far less than the usual price. We upgraded to a Junior Suite which was good, great views and comfortable, but would never have paid the full price asked for this room.

Room service was average. food arrived cold, spring rolls were burnt and the satay was tough and tastless. Drinks at the pool bar were expensive, but normal for a 4 star hotel. Pool Bar happy hour was boring and without any energy from the staff to make it fun.

All pools are fantastic and the views over the bay are great.

Breakfast food was a good assortment of thai and european style.

Front service staff were friendly and good at arranging things. Hotel transport staff were unfriendly and would not assist us when our hire care failed to start without being paid for a basic jump start for the car.

Had better and much cheaper food further up the road at near the Aquarium, about a kilometre away.

The hotel was only half full, but most of those were Russian. What an abnoxious and arrogant group of people I have ever come across, unfortunately this was the flavour across the main centres in Phuket in Patong, Kata and Karon as they have taken over everything. I feel very sad for the Thai people having to put up with these arrogant people.

If the hotel is wants these people instead of a multi cultural atmosphere, we won't be going back. Good luck with the Russians, you will need it.

Room Tip: Find out if the hotel is catering for the Russians before booking as you will not be happy with thei...
