“Great vacation with the family”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2011

We travelled with 2 kids aged 7 and 5 and booked a garden villa with plunge pool. The room was nice and large with a large bathroom, and a sofa which converts into a bed where even an adult can sleep. The plunge pool has a jacuzzi as well and very private. The villa was barely 20 metres from the beach and perfectly located.

The resort is fantastic for families with kids with good facilities from a large pool, kids club, tennis and squash courts, golf chipping range, table tennis, and the like. On the beach they have kayaking, sailing, fishing. The beach is nice and quiet with not much around. The water is very calm but not clear which was disappointing. The resort has a library of over 350 DVDs which can be watched in the room free of cost. They also have a library with books and two computers with high speed internet to surf, check mails, etc.

The service was excellent, the staff extremely courteous and well trained in taking care of all your needs. Really service with a smile.

Location wise, Maenam Beach is very relaxed with not much in the area barring a few "shacks" within walking distance of the hotel. We rented a car one day and drove around the island. After seeing the crowds at Chaweng, we were quiet happy with our choice of location. In any case, taxis or the hotel limo are available at reasonable prices to go to Bophut or other beaches / towns.

Thanks to the Santiburi team for a great vacation

This is actually a belated review as I stayed here in one of the 'villas' almost on the beach a couple of years ago and forgot to review!
Loved this place, from the beautiful room to the excellend service and the fabulous pool and beach. We are well-travelled and this place met all of our expectations and more.
Would love to go back soon

We stayed 6 nights here and liked it a lot! The lovely staff (everyone, from the garden worker up to the top management) is very friendly, helpful and never obtrusively. They loved it, to make our stay very comfortable!
The standardroom we had was very spacy (2 floors, bath- and livingroom with TV, minibar, air-condition and sofa on the 1st level and upstairs the beds with separate TV and air-condition) and clean. We got 6 bottles (3l) of free drinking water and a basket fresh fruits every day!

The hotel beach area (the hotel is situated at the Mae Nam Beach) was never crowded and also very clean. No sandflys or dogs. The hotel has 300m of well keeped and clean palm beach with nice sand. You can choice between hammocks and sunbed to relax on it. Choose your place well at your first time on the beach. The staff reserves this place you for your hole stay ;-) The water goes fast rather deep. Maybe 2m from the beach it is about 1m deep. Take care of small children!

A bit away from the beach is the pool and a separate children pool and a jakusi. We didn't used it. The beach was too beautiful!

The breakfast was outstanding! Fresh fruits, muesli, eggs in any style, fresh cake, coffee, latte, cappuccino (they can make it with soymilk if you're allergic on cowmilk), any kind of tea... We didn't missed anything!

The restaurants they have are good priced for a hotel in this class. There are some restaurants on the beach and on the street outside the hotel and on every thursday from 4pm there a nice market near the temple, about 500m from the hotel with many foodstands and grills. Very nice!

Nevertheless, there are some things, they could be better:
- the noise from the air-conditioning is very loud in the standard rooms. The batteries are just outside the room and are running the hole night.
- one night, the light in our sleeping room flashed suddenly at 2am. Fore or five times. Until we find out how to fix it (you have to put the switch into the right position), the night was nearly gone...
- during our stay, they had two staff occasions. We don't have anything against staff partys, but one in one week would be better for the clients. We noted, that the staff is happy to go there and the service was a little bit less generose.

But all in all we can highly recommend to stay here and would like to come back! We enjoyed it a lot! Kop kun ka!!!

On many occasions we have stayed at Hotel Santiburi, Koh Samui, in Thailand (more than ten times).

Unfortunately, the last time we were there at the end of March 2011, we were witnesses of terrible and impressing floods. Further to Koh Samui airport closure, we had to stay 5 supplementary days at the hotel. Without asking anything, we have been granted by hotel’ Management an exceptionally low bungalow rate during our enforced stay.

It should be noted that this natural catastrophe happened extremely suddenly at the beginning of the night on Monday, March 28, 2011. We were impressed by the outstanding manner in which hotel’s Managing Director, Mr. Willy Optekamp, his wife, as well as his team under his leadership, handled this exceptional crisis situation (no electricity, kitchens destroyed, no possibility to access property’ garden and some bungalows during the whole night until the following morning).

We have been served and offered all meals, including the disastrous night (meals have been delivered by another hotel via extremely flooded roads). We have more than appreciated Mr. Willy Optekamp outstanding leadership, strategic capabilities, dedication, bravery and kindness, as well as the presence and kindness of his wife and the exceptional performance of his Management team, hotel & Spa employees.

We thank very much Mr. Optekamp, his wife, his Management Team, as well as hotel employees for being there for us, all hotel guests blocked there under these exceptional circumstances.

From the moment we arrived the service was impeccible. Both Thai and western staff were always around to assist us, the friendly hotel manager often personally greeting us at breakfast and dinner to make sure we were happy. A nice touch that you won't get at Sheraton or Shangri-la.

The location and surroundings were incredibly beautiful with lush colorful flower gardens and palm trees throughout the grounds. We stayed in a beach-front villa only steps from the water. Reading my book on a hamock in the morning with the sun rising over the ocean was just pure peace.

The buffet breakfast was fantastic as was the multi-cultural barbecues by the ocean under moonlight. Every day there was an ample offering of different cuisine such that even my somewhat picky wife was always left satisfied!

We used the gym almost everyday, followed by a dip in the massive pool that sits near centre of the resort. We also played golf a few times at what I can only describe as one of the most beautiful (and challenging) golf experiences in my life. Make sure to ask for the special guest rate as the course is also owned by Santiburi.

I find it difficult to say anything negative about our experience at Santiburi. Unfortunatley this sort of luxury comes at a cost, but it is certainly worth it, especially if you can afford a villa.

If we ever go to Samui again Santiburi will be our first choice for accomodation.

Highly recommended!

We thoroughyl enjoyed our stay at Santiburi. The staff were incredibly friendly and always on hand whenever needed. We stayed in a garden villa which we really enjoyed. 2 towels per person, cold water and an ice cold face-cloth at the pool and the beach were most welcome. Didn't eat dinner at the restaurant as we found the prices rather expensive but we found some great places to eat at fisherman's village. The golf course is world class.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are in close proximity to the beach

The staff are so friendly and just want to make your stay so enjoyable. 3 weeks after the floods you would never know how bad it was thanks to hard working staff and locals. The attention to detail is fantastic, They even have cleaners to sweep the beach! It runs like clockwork. I thought the Chedi was 5* but the Santiburi raised the bar even higher! A group of gardeners keep the lanscaped gardens green and lush. The cleaners visit twice a day to put fresh fruit in the room and others come to turn your bed down and leave you a small gift. Breakfast is very varied but the usual attempt to create a full English breakfast falls a bit short. fruit, salad, cereals, cold meats, toast, juices. It may not be the best meal but you will never go hungry! The pool is massive but never had more than 10 people at any one time. loads of sunbeds and drinking water supplied FOC. There is a lovely breeze on the palmy beach. Loads of beds and hammocks in the palm trees. I went on the Catamaran twice and had 5 free sailboarding lessons to while away the time. The waiters brought free icecream or melon round on the afternoon and supplied free water when you need it not to mention cleaning your glasses at the same time! The beachfront restaurant do a selection of afternoon meals such as a club sandwich with chips for about £10 but it is big enough to share. Free afternoon tea and cake at 4 pm. Any more free touches and it will become all inclusive!! The ladies had their nails done one day and said it was well worth the money. The Golf course is not for beginners. The only downside is the 15 minute distance to the nightlife in Bophut - 300 BHT(£6 each way) or £10 to Chaweng in a taxi. If you can afford the extra money take a villa over an appartment but you will not be disappointed with either.
