L'Oiseau du Paradis
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Stayed at L'Oiseau du Paradis for a couple of nights back in 2010 (didn't review at the time because it wasn't listed on Trip Advisor and didn't know how to add it!). We were stopping over on our way back to the Uk from Australia. (NB The box indicating when we stayed wouldn't let us go that far back, so put April 2013, which was the month we were there!)

Obviously can't recall much detail, but thought the decor was absolutely stunning. Our room was comfortable and clean, the staff and owner were friendly and helpful, and we loved having breakfast in the shady garden! We had our lunch at a little place just next door the day we arrived - amazing food which cost next to nothing.

Beach close at hand, just over the road. Not a snorkelling beach - went down to the nearby village of Pointe d'Esny and paid a modest amount for one of the boat owners to take us nearer to the reef. (Amazing snorkelling conditions and lots of information about the fish and different sorts of coral from the boat owner).

A few restaurants in Pointe d'Esny which is just a short walk away, and easy to get to Mahebourg by bus in the other direction.

May be a long time since we were there but a really memorable stay!

we stayed 4 nights at this lovely little guesthouse just across the road from a very nice beach. However, during the winter month this part of the island is much exposed to the South Easterly wind and it can get a bit cold, especially in the evening. The guesthouse is in the vicinity of the airport thus no long transfers involved. Rooms are very tastefully decorated but a little small and we missed a TV for the rather long evenings. Room had fridge and tea & coffee making facilities as well as a safe. Bathroom with good strong shower. The smallness of the room is compensated with a nice balcony but with the strong wind blowing from the East one could not stay outside for long. Breakfast in the form of a buffet is served in the lovely beautiful garden. Staff very friendly and attentive. With only 2 restaurants and 1 table d'hote in walking distance evening meals become a bit of a problem. Daytime one can take the bus to explore Mahebourg and further.

We are a family of four adults who stayed for three nights in the self-catering "Garden Bungalow" in the back section of L'Oiseau du Paradis. We found the place delightful, charming, small (yes), but quite comfortable, clean and very beautifully decorated. The price for the bungalow was very reasonable for four of us and the breakfast (which we chose to have one morning) was excellent. We found excellent eating-out options at the nearby Bougainville and Blue Bamboo restaurants - both within walking distance. We enjoyed early morning excursions across the road and a few metres down an access path to the relatively unpopulated Pointe D'Esny beach which is unspoilt in comparison to the rest of the island's overpopulated tourist areas. We disliked Blue Bay public beach (crowded and dirty) and were a disappointed when we went snorkellling in the Blue Bay Marine Reserve where, although there were lovely fish, a great deal of the coral has been destroyed. A much better option is to take a day trip to lovely Ile aux Aigrettes where you can walk in indigenous ebony forest and enjoy seeing the rare giant tortoises, birds, reptiles and bats being conserved through the efforts of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.

My friend and I stayed at Oiseau du Paradis on our holiday in Mauritius last December. I think this place is way too expensive compared to other guest houses in the island. You can easily find better and cleaner accommodations for less money in much nicer areas of Mauritius. We payed € 78 per day including breakfast (which was nice and with a nice variety of fresh fruits, croissants, cheese, breads, muslin) but the room was way too tiny. Thank God we had a terrace so we didn't feel bad. In any case, the guest house is 5 minutes walking distance from the overrated public beach of Blue Bay which I think is the worst and dirtiest beach I have seen in Mauritius, especially during weekends. The only good thing about the beach is the boat tours of the islands of the south that we had taken with TOTOF. Amazing staff and great and fresh lobster at the beach. I highly recommend to do the tour with his crew. The other walking distance beach, which is just a few step on the opposite side of the guest house, is the beach of Point D'Esny which I think it is nothing special, especially if you have been at the beach of Le Morne (in the south-west of the Island). Overall, Oiseau du Paradis is in a bad location because there are not nice beaches, there are only 3 restaurants nearby which are bad and too expensive, especially if you think this area is not very touristic) and it is very expensive. We then moved to another guest house near Le Morne, which was amazing, super clean, and beautifully located near the most amazing beach of the island in Le Morne for a beautiful, big and super clean room for almost 20 € less per night including breakfast. So my suggestion is to avoid this guest house and overall to avoid Blue Bay (but to do the tour of the island of the south with TOTOF) and to stay in another area of the Island which has a lot more to offer and which is definitely much better (for example Le Morne).

Lovely, fresh, airy feeling; incredibly kind and helpful staff, great contacts for local touristic activities and location.

We had some trouble accessing local currency through our ATM (debit card got blocked) over the weekend, leaving us in a lurch. The management was excellent in helping us to navigate this situation and everything worked out well.

Room Tip: Don't miss the snorkeling/island tour with Totof!!! Make sure that Yannick plays his guitar and...
