“You get what you pay for.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2010

I booked my stay with Drago Apartmani prior to discovering any reviews about it - and once i had i was anxious to say the least!

I corresponded with the owner through email a lot, so learnt very early on that his English is less than basic. I confirmed numbers of people in email, we booked the 8 person room for 8 people and a twin room for 2.. which i would reccomend re-itterating after reading some recent reviews. Our plane was very delayed so two of our group flying from a different airport arrived much earlier than us who were in the two person room, but the owner insisted they were in the larger room. When the rest of us arrived, as soon as i showed him the booking confirmation and he saw how many of us there were he immediately confirmed the twin room - i think as it was during festival period he had to be careful that he was going to get stitched up perhaps? Anyway, no problems once we had arrived.

The rooms were excellent. They were clean, there were sheets on each bed, the kitchen was full of utensils to cater for ourselves, there was a dish washer with plenty of tablets for the week, they had supplied each room with mosquito plug ins and a few satchets to get us started for the holiday. The twin room had a bathroom attached to it, only divided by a curtain which may have been a bit uncomfortable at times.. but you get what you pay for and really it wasn't too bad. There were no towels in the apartment which i clued up on with a previous review before leaving - but I do not think that is such a big deal. The only thing that let the rooms down in my eyes is that at no point during the 6 night stay, did they come in and clean the rooms or change the sheets. I would have expected that at least once, but given that the rest of the apartments were full of groups of teenagers causing havoc all through the pm and am - i can sort of see why they didn't bother.

The position of the apartments was perfect. It was about a 20 minute walk from the festival site at Hotel Pinija up a slight hill, with wonderful views of the water. The aparments were situated very close to the restaurants in Petrcane and if you took the road opposite it lead you to the other side of the beach which was much quieter.

The owners were definitely not the most hospitable people i have come across, but i found that if you were nice to them, they were just as nice back. I think the real issue is the language barrier - but Petrcane is still quite an up and coming place so i'm sure that will improve with future seasons.

All in all i would reccomend Drago Apartmani if you're looking for a budget place to stay with a good location. Oh, and take insect repellant! Every sort you can find.. they are fiesty little sods in Croatia! But you can't really blame the apartments for that..

Just returned from the Garden Festival with a small group of 4 other friends.

I'm normally quite patient and sensible with hotels/apartments as I and each of my friends travel often for leisure and for business, but this experience was so bad, I was committed to register with tripadvisor to make sure nobody else goes through the same nightmare we did!

We booked two apartments, one with 2 bedrooms (1 double bed and 2 singles) fitting 4 persons and one which was actually just a bedroom (with a double bed) and a shared bathroom (missed the small print on that one!) fitting 2 persons. Nowhere on their site does it specify charge per person. One friend arrived earlier and took the bedroom downstairs, while the other 4 of us arrived in the afternoon to check-in the 2BR upstairs. Soon as we arrived, they caused a big scene saying you didn't claim 4 persons for the 2BR apartment which puzzled us and wouldn't let us check-in. Adament that we cough up another €300 to allow 2 more persons to stay in there. Normally, I would have laughed it off and find something else but they had already taken our deposit payment. After an hour and a half of poor negotiations with the landlady and terrible translating by their nephew Boris (who later admitted we were being scammed and that she does this all the time), as well as getting our Croatian friend on the phone to figure out what the problem was we managed to pay half to just check-in and get to the festival 3 hours later than planned! Accepting this is a lose/lose scenario for us. Ruined our excitement for the trip.

Soon as we got in, we noticed there were no towels, which is a rarity in renting apartments, especially since they did leave a bed sheet for each bed. I would have bought a towel if they offered but was still upset from being forced to bribe my way into my reserved room, so tried to find some in the village near the festival instead, which was a bit of a challenge. Fortunately, 2 of our friends were smart enough to bring their own.

I don't have high expectations when travelling to remote villages like Petrcane but there are some things which would be nice like ventilation in the shared bathroom space or even in our 2BR apartment upstairs. The walk to the apartment from the festival grounds felt longer everytime plus it was uphill. Not so nice in the heat of the summer and not as close to the beach as the website claims.

Lastly, sleep quality, the apartment is facing an uphill junction where lots of construction trucks and road traffic kept having to yield/stop. Not so easy to sleep with gears grinding most of the time especially since we were forced to open the windows for ventilation.

I'll score them average for one thing and that's cleanliness, but that's how bad our jokes got over the weekend, kidding that we should have paid more for plumbing and a clean room. Pathetic. The only saving grace I had was the loud kids above us playing music and drinking til late at night keeping the owners awake and angry.

Other festival goers beware, and spread the word.

A group of friends stayed here during the Garden Festival, which was just a 15 minute walk down the road. This fact and the fact that the rooms were indeed clean are where the compliments end.

When we arrived, at night, two older women and a young man (all apparently in charge of running the place) "checked us in". I handed over a copy of the reservation and a copy of the bank transfer which was completed in advance. Immediately things began to become sketchy. First of all, they decided to charge extra for the bank transfer fee, even though this fee was expressly included in the bill to me and therefore already included in the amount of my transfer to them. But what are you going to do about it at night in a small town during a music festival, meaning nowhere has any empty rooms? I argued just a little bit, but they would not budge so I paid the bank transfer fee for the second time.

At this point, it gets worse. I had booked an apartment with two rooms, 3 beds (two small beds and 1 large bed). Three of us were trying to stay there. Suddenly they said it was not acceptable because the reservation was only for two people, which was not true. They showed a copy of the reservation and demanded more money for the third person even though we had booked and paid for an apartment that sleeps 4 people. So we basically ended up arguing for a long time about this but ended up paying a 30% shake-down at night fee for checking in. There was nothing we could do, but it is truly insulting and illegal to be robbed like that flat out. The people working there even laughed at us as we considered what we should do. Seeing as they had my bank transfer already, there was not much room for backing out, though we called a nearby hotel and would have gladly lost the bank transfer just to stay in a normal respectable place that doesn't insult you and screw you like that.

We wanted to call the police and turn them in, but then we would not have had a place to stay. So we sucked it up and paid their bribe and ended up enjoying the music festival but hating the place and its management. What a scam. Do not even think about staying there. In most places, this place would be shut down and the people would be locked up for this behavior.

Oh and otherwise you're in a tiny soviet-style apartment with no air conditioning, no towels, one sheet on each bed, and mosquitos that destroy you at night, so enjoy your stay!

We stayed here for four nights whilst attending the Airbound festival. The price was cheap but not good value for money. We had booked 2 apartments, four people in each. Each apartment was supposed to have a twin room and a double room. Only one of the apartments has this though- the other one was two double rooms which was a tad annoying for the two people who would prefer not to sleep in bed with each other- especially since there is no air con (which we knew in advance) but with such small rooms, there is a need for some sort of ventilation- like a fan -which there is not!! It could get quite unbearable at times.

We had two apartments on the top floor and had sea views which were lovely. The apartments are situated up a hill- so be prepared for a tough walk if you're walking up it in mid day heat with your suitcase! It's about 15/20 mins walk to the festival site which is on the beach.

The amenities provided in the apartment are fine- but THEY DON'T PROVIDE TOWELS - which is v inconvienient since we couldn't find a shop in Petrcane which sold them.

The owner is very unfriendly- he doesn't speak english so there is a bit of a language barrier- but that wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't so rude!! I'm not sure he knows what a smile is. On check out day- the staff were already in our rooms starting to clean them, before the check out time. Some of our friends were staying on longer in another of the apartments so we wanted to leave our luggage in their room, whilst we went down to the beach - we got shouted at by the owner when attempting to do this- and had to settle with leaving all our things in his hallway- which had an open door so not v safe! Before we left for the airport- we wanted to have a quick shower/wash in our friends apartment and were shouted at again by the owner who refused to let us up there! We ended up going to another friends apartment down the road to use their facilities- and also happened to meet the apartment owner who was v v friendly- think we'll try and stay there next time!
