Solway Holiday Village
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We have just returned from a weekend stay at Solway Holiday Village with our grown up children, partners and grandsons (the family are actually still there for one more night, we had to return early due to work).

The girl on check in on Friday teatime was lovely - so friendly and efficient, this was a good start to the weekend, having read some horror stories on Trip Advisor. We had been allocated caravan 2 an "Orlando" and it was very nice indeed (the only gripe I suppose I had was we had to start making up the beds on arrival). However, the bed linen was beautifully laundered - crips white cotton sheets and pillow cases. It was rather cold when we arrived, but the gas fire and heating soon had it as warm as toast. Unforunately there were only two wine glasses for 7 adults and these were mismatched! I would recommend taking your own or plastic ones.

The site was actually very clean and the public areas i.e. the bars and concert room. I can't understand people who have complained about the mud; nobody can help the weather!

The drinks in the concert room are certainly well over-priced - £13.95 for a bottle of wine! £19 for a pint of lager, bottle of wine and a glass of soda water!

The staff were very good with the children and there were some fantastic halloween costumes and our grandchildren really enjoyed dressing up.

Disappointingly there was no entertainment on for today (Sunday) - seems ridiculous when most people go to stay for weekends.

Would probably stay again - especially if they reduced the prices of the drinks in the bars.

Room Tip: Our Orlando caravan number 2 was ideally situated for everything

We stayed for 4 nights (Sun Holiday) 24th September in a Cumberland Caravan. We arrived on a very wet Monday afternoon and were welcomed with a smile by the receptionist who
provided our welcome pack and directions to our caravan. We were very impressed with the
caravan which had 3 bedrooms, separate toilet and twin sized shower room. The caravan was clean, spacious and the kitchen well equiped. The only thing that I noticed was missing was a toaster. The gas fire gave much need heat at night and the heater vents in the bedrooms & bathroom kept the caravan warm. The town had two small supermarkets, Pub, Pizza, Indian & Chinese Takeaways. We used the site as a base to explore the lakes and surrounding area.and had a very pleasant stay.

We arrived after a hideously wet few days, and it also poured down overnight whilst we were there, producing widespread flooding in the area, but with no noticeable effect on our part of the site.
Having paid £60 for four of us for three nights, for a 2 bedroom chalet, and including the (excellently efficient) heating, we were very pleasantly surprised. It wasn't luxury, but it was clean and more than adequate. On the down-side the kitchen equipment was a bit mean - only 4 of everything, (meaning that some washing up was necessary between courses !) but on the other hand there were such things as bedside lights, and free-view (on a rather small tv), and a very efficient shower (and bath)
Arrived at reception, and were cheerfully welcomed, and out with the keys within 30 seconds. I had a minor tv problem (vital, as I wanted to watch the Ryder Cup highlights each night !), which I reported to reception. A mechanic got to the chalet even before I got back, and fixed it quickly.
No idea about the 'entertainment' as we didn't need it. For what we did want - an incredibly cheap, and surprisingly comfortable, base from which to explore the area, it was fine.

Room Tip: Go for a chalet rather than a caravan - more space, and immediate area more pleasant

My husband and I spent a 3 nights "Sun" break in a 2 bedroomed chalet (Borrowdale) which was spacious and comfortable. There wasn't any central heating but the electric fires were adequate. We ran out of credit on our meter but a staff member came straight away to reset it. The chalet was clean but dated and the surroundings were pleasant.
The staff were helpful.
We thought the scenery around the area was lovely and saw a beautiful sunset.
We also visited Carlisle which we enjoyed.

Stayed here for three nights back in feb before the start of the season in a chalet with hot tub. When we arrived got the key and found the chalet in complete darkness, didnt know where the electric meter was and had to fumble around to find it,you would have thought management would have put pound in at least. It was very cold but the chalet soon warmed up with all heaters on.The hot tub was great and the grandchildren loved it,especially when it started snowing. The next day went to have a look around it was very quiet and looked very run down, nothing in the shop, pool closed which we thought was open only the arcade with old machines openwent into Siloth which has nothing to do at all, ended up going to Carlisle. My husband took the kids to watch football on the sunday night in the one pub that was open but it was quite expensive.Staying here in season might be completely different experience but if planning to go out of season think twice about it.The hot tub was great very clean, ready when we get there and cleaned every morning but you cant sit in it for three days. The cost of the electric for the three days was around £15 to keep the chalet warm, and another gripe is no where to put towels etc when in tub and also only four of everything in kitchen which is a pain when doing any cooking.Would not stay here again.

Room Tip: get chalet with hot tub.

I stayed here with my children and another family at the beginning of September. The chalet itself was nice, clean, tidy and warm, amenties in it were good and generally I was pleased.

I was let down however, by the management not preparing the hot tub for us until we got there which meant that we could not use it until the next day, we were only there for two nights.

The facilities were good, pool, play centre and farm were all loved by the kids and were of a very good standard as was the bistro which served very nice food.

The attitude of the management lets this place down as they are very laid back and have a 'not bothered' attitude.

Room Tip: Pick a plus chalet
