We stayed in The Golf Hotel for 2 nights over a weekend. From the moment we walked in, it was a disapointment. We arrived late in the evening and had to go to the bar to check in, we were greeted by blank expressions, given no info on the hotel or area, just a key and directions to the room. Felt like they were annoyed with us for interupting their evening!

Our room was at the back, right next to the massive noisy extractor from the kitchen, meaning from breakfast to 9pm our room stank like a chip pan. This kicked in a 7.30am, so no chance of a lie in. This was made even worse by the fact that on both nights we were kept awake by the music from the hotel bar until 12.30 1am.

Breakfast - the first morning we were put into the hotel bar instead of the breakfast room as there were no clean tables. Took 10mins to get served. Cold Buffett consisted of a small table with a few cereal packets and yogurts. Had to find our own milk, was served tea and coffee but had no cups. Breakfast was ok but very greasy. The second morning we had much better service but boiled eggs were dry and hard.

Evening meal - I had lasagne which was a mistake. Stodgy reheated rubbish. My girlfriend had salmon which was really nice!

At one point we had to complain as the stairs to our room (which is also a fire escape route) was blocked by dirty sheets. When I told the lady on reception she laughed and said it's because the cleaners throw them over the balcony! When my girlfriend mentioned health & safety she soon stopped laughing...

All in all just a succession of disapointments.

We had a very enjoyable stay here while visiting a relative who lives in the area. Silloth is a very quiet place and 25 years after we spent our honeymoon there in a caravan, we were amazed to see the town had hardly changed at all. The Golf remains the only place in town to eat in the evening and their bar meal service is excellent, with efficient service and quality food at very reasonable prices. There is no separate restaurant as such, although the food in the bar is of restaurant quality. Our family room was spacious and spotless, with a nice big bathroom, although the TV was tiny and old-fashioned with just the five terrestrial channels. That will have to change shortly as this area of Cumbria is undergoing the digital TV switchover imminently. Staff were friendly and helpful: the only quibbles were the fact that breakfast, which was swiftly served and of good quality, was only available until 9.30am on a weekend and, most concerning of all, that a £25 deposit per person was taken up front on booking in advance. It was non-refundable, so with a young child in our party visiting a septugenarian, we were anxious for weeks between booking and arriving that no-one fell ill. That condition struck us as rather steep and rather harsh and quite a contrast to most other places. I know an independent is never going to be able to emulate Premier Inn where you can cancel up to 1pm on the day of arrival with no penalty, but sure a garduated policy of, say, deposit back if you cancel up to a week before arrival, 50 per cent penalty between a week and 48 or 24 hours and deposit lost after that would be fairer and less potentially off-putting. Maybe the owners can look at this along with all the other improvements they are clearly making, Silloth is a lovely little town with great potential and The Golf is a gem at its very heart.

Called in looking for 2 single rooms, we were told "They are small", the rooms could easily have a double bed!
Ensuite bathroom was excellent.
Good views from the windows, quiet location, but still in the centre of Silloth.
The staff were enthusiastic, multi tasking, everybody did all the jobs, nothing was a problem for them.
Restaurant was first class, good quality, good value.
We would have liked to stay longer.
Minus points, no wifi, probably coming, no lift but strong staff!
