We ate here with 5 during our recent stay in SW France. The setting is a pleasant surprise, inside a medieval "Bastide" town, you could almost walk past and not know this was a top restaurant. Inside one eats either in an inner courtyard, or in the dining room. The staff who met us were polite, trying their best in English, and the chef came to welcome us.
The food was excellent. We had elected for the larger, gourmet menu and each course was just the right size and beautifully presented, including wafer thin dried and caramelised vegetables and fungi to highlight the dish. Our son had set his teenage heart on having the chef's signature dish, the Foie Gras Hamburger, which was not part of the set menu. This was no problem, and the crowning moment was when it was brought to the table Chef Trama came to table and introduced himself to our son as "Mr McTrama...you see the M in Michael is where the arches came from...", and explaining about the ceps ketchup to accompany it.
The rest of the meal was also superb, great attention to detail (watch out for the chocolate match next to the chocolate cigar on the desert plate). This is not molecular gastronomy, it is superbly executed classic cuisine that tests your palate without resorting to liquid nitrogen!
We specially asked to be served local wines, and the sommelier brought us a delightful white, red and outstanding desert wine at very reasonable prices. When I asked for details, he carefully wrote out the name, telephone number and website of the vintner on a card. There are of course the great names of France on the wine list at $$$$/bottle if you wish. There is also a small number of non-French wines, including US, Austrian, Italian and Spanish.
If I had any comment, it is that twice my son needed to reach over to the side table with the wine and water and refill a glass. Not a big issue, just shouldn't happen.
All in all a splendid experience, beautifully executed.
