“Cycling, wine and food retreat in St Emilion"s rolling vineyards”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

We arrived straight from a trans-atlantic flight hoping to spend a few days resting up to before beginning a tour of the Dordogne in September. Clos de la Barbanne offers 4 guest rooms nestled amid the vineyards of St Emilion-Montagne , just minutes by bicycle or car from St Emilion. There is no better spot from which to explore St Emilion and the surrounding region than the little piece of heaven exquisitely embellished by owner-residents Annie and Laurent Gerber.

We settled into very large rooms that were enhanced by a tasteful minimalist aesthetic. The beds were large and comfortable, the separate sitting area provides almost a second room and the bathroom was airy and huge and had contemporary fixtures that worked perfectly. The entire suite was impeccably clean and plants in bloom peaked in from the windows both large and small. The rooms open out onto a lawn and a view of the rolling vineyards and the steeples of St Emilion and St Christophe in the distance.

Each morning, we ambled out to tables on the lawn and were served a delicious breakfast that changed daily. Annie will, upon advance request, prepare and serve a special dinner in the private dining room. We thoroughly enjoyed Annie’s inventive preparation. We regretted having to go back to eating in crowded restaurants for the rest of our trip. (To avoid disappointment, it is important not to wait to book dinner until you arrive.)

One evening with a perfect sunset, Laurent guided us through the vineyard and the chais, with interesting aides on local history and a tasting of Barbanne’s excellent wine.

We really appreciated the brand new bicycles provided free of charge for exploring the surrounding vineyards and countryside. The small quiet roads make for excellent biking and walking. Annie also made arrangements for a private bicycle tour of Bordeaux with an informative , multi-lingual guide.

As much as I love exploring France in its chambres d’hote, small hotels and gites, they frequently are cramped, kitschy and only moderately functional. Barbanne was a welcome alternative – large, comfortable, clean lines, modern bath and communication facilities, and attentive, but not intrusive, care. A real bargain.

We spent two nights at Clos de la Barbanne in August 2012 as part of a road trip of South West France and it was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed.

The setting is absolutely idyllic - amongst the vineyards owned by the hosts, Annie and Laurent. It is about 4km from Saint Emilion, a lovely town worth exploring, with plenty of restaurants and of course wine shops! Our room was huge and beautifully furnished, with patio doors leading into the garden, and our bathroom was decorated to a very high standard - very elegant and tasteful, with a walk in shower and double sink.

Annie and Laurent were full of local knowledge and recommended a scenic route to drive or cycle, touring around some of the local chateaux and vineyards (wine tasting optional!). They spent a lot of time with us explaining the route and making phone calls to enquire about opening hours etc on our behalf. Clos de la Barbanne is also ideally located for day trips to the west coast, to Bordeaux or into the Dordogne.

Annie and Laurent are so warm and welcoming and made the experience really special. We had dinner at the Clos on the first night, on the terrace overlooking the vineyard, which was magical (make sure you book dinner in advance). The food, cooked by Annie, was superb, and Laurent kept us topped up with matching wines, including a great red produced on their vineyard. We had at least four courses and it was great value. Annie's breakfasts were also fabulous, and plentiful - the best of our trip, and it was the only place where breakfast was included.

We stayed in some lovely places during our France trip but Clos de la Barbanne was the absolute highlight and we look back on it with very fond memories. We really hope to return!

We were welcommed by warmth and friendlyness. Annie and Laurent are living not working at Clos de la Barbanne and this makes the atmosphere very special. The lodging was very good and the dinner fabulous, and it was topped by the wine. It is very special that a "Hotel" with two employees serve homemade dinner, five courses, and serve their own, homemade wine to go with it. This is something we have not experienced before in the Clubs history!

Lying sleepily in the shade, Portos the house cat sets tone of this country retreat.
The beds are truly luxurious and the rooms are much bigger and more elagantly furnished than you would expect from a very posh hotel. As self confessed B&B snobs, and after staying  in five smart hotels and Chambre d'hôte around Bordeaux this week, Clos de la Barbanne is by far and away the best value for money.
As if God's own creation; except it's actually the creation of Laurent and Annie, proud homeowners/house-elves that quietly make you feel unashamedly pampered.
After a swim in their indoor heated pool we found homemade iced pineapple and lemon juices on our bedroom terrace.
The breakfast of fresh cheese, ham and tomato baked with tarragon, thyme and basil followed by homemade quince jam and apple cake is both inventive and delicious.
Away from the hype and industrial commerciality of St Emillion this is a truer working vineyard that gives insight into the more everyday side of the region's mono-culture.
Truly remarkable. We will return.

Stayed two days Enid June to begin a tour of Bordeaux area and Dordogne
Laurent and Annie could not be more hospitable - it actually felt more like staying with friends
The dinner which we opted for on Day 1 was spectacular and would have passed muster in a very good French restaurant - but with a homely atmosphere
Room spacious, comfortable bed, large immaculate bathroom and wi fi
Idyllic location among vineyards
The only drawback that it was our first of several stays and the only way was down from here!!

But with a

Friends recommended this B&B close to St Emilion and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We stayed in the Paraschiva suite which was upstairs and more private. It was lovely, spacious and light. Annie and Laurent are warm and gracious hosts and we appreciated their recommendations and reservations for meals and wine-tasting. Annie is an excellent cook and the meals we ate there (3 breakfasts and 2 dinners) rated among the best we had in a 2 week trip to France. Imagine a foie gras and rillette starter followed by a chilled melon soup with smoked bacon and mint, warm oysters with a ginger and marsala dressing, scallops with fusilli pasta, onions, carrots and cream and finally a delicious meringue and almond concoction for dessert!
