“Amazing weekend in St. Emillion”
Reviewed April 17, 2012

The best thing about Chateau St. Jacques Calon is Stephane, the owner. He is extremely friendly and welcoming and an amazing source of tips and knowledge about restaurants, vineyards and pretty much everything else in the area. I was here for a long weekend with some girlfriends and it was absolutely delightful. Since there were 4 of us we stayed in the two adjoining rooms at the front of the property and it was great to be able to open up the connecting door and basically have one large suite. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend in the heart of French wine country. Remember a car is a must, as the property is about a 10 minute drive from the heart of St. Emilion, and vineyards are scattered throughout the area. Our favorite vineyard was Chateau Mauvezin, and the farmers market in Libourne is a must. Thanks again Stephane - we hope to come back soon!

Lovely room with doors to the pool. I could get used to this life. Charming host with tips on restaurants and area activities.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the chateau immensely. When driving by car it is great to have easy to follow directions obtained on the website. Stephane welcomed us and was a great host and extremely helpful. He had lots of information re parking and activities in St Emilion. Our room was clean and large and overlooked the beautiful pool and it was a pleasure to have breakfast set up outside our room every morning. Very restful. The restaurants that Stephane sent us to were great and close by. If you are looking for a restful respite with a historic and beautiful town close by (St Emilion) and you like wine this is the stay for you! Thanks Stephane (and your parents) for a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room in a wing attached to the back of the main house overlooking the pool. Very res...

The inn is charming, small inn of new construction with an old world feel. Rooms are lovely... If you like a lot of light and fresh air, be sure to ask for a room with windows on the front, toward the pool, and back, toward the vineyards. Some rooms have only the french doors on the pool side. The owner is very attentive to his guest's needs and makes you feel very welcome. We were given detailed suggestions on where to dine, which vinyards to visit and recommendations of popular villages to see. The house is lovely with an attached wing for guest bedrooms that opens directly from each well appointed room to a stunning pool and garden. The location in St. Emilion is perfect as the village is delightful with many things to do and see. It is minutes away from Bordeaux and easy to get to if you fly or arrive by high speed train from Paris CDG Airport as we did.

Room Tip: See our comments about a room. The end room with windows on the front and back was our favorite.

I had very high expectations of my visit to the Chateaux and was delighted that in every aspect they were exceeded. The host,Stephan and his parents, could not have possibly been nicer and helpful. We arrived late and were met by Stephan's father, Monsieur Christian, who not only made reservations at a wonderful restaurant but he had us follow him to the restaurant and later called to see that we were not lost coming back. Both wine tastings arranged by Stephan were very instructive and on the first visit it was conducted by the owner of the Chateaux. The room was spotless, the bathroom fit for the most demanding, bed was great, and having breakfast in front of the room by the pool and a beautiful garden was "a great touch of class". St Emilion was only a few minutes away,no traffic, easy parking and above all,one of the most interesting places we have visited in Europe. Needles to say we plan to return. What a beautiful and peaceful place Stephane & his family have just a short drive from the historical centre of Saint Emilion. Our accommodation was perfect. The room was clean, comfortable & large. From the moment we arrived we felt as though we had picked the perfect B&B from our room, the lovely Chateau, swimming pool, gardens, breakfast and assistance from Stephane & his family. We were made to feel very welcome and Stephane recommended a fantastic restaurant nearby with views overlooking a vineyard. He also organised a personal winery tour at a nearby vineyard in Saint Emilion which was educational and fantastic! Stephane even assisted us to charge 'up' our electric hire car & went out of his way to make sure our stay was perfect. Thanks Stephane & family...we hope to be back to stay one day! Room Tip: All the rooms are great

From the minute we arrived Stephane and his familiy made us feel most welcome into their picturesque Chateau. Tucked away on the edge of a quiet village....just a few miles from St Emilion, our spotlessly clean, four poster bedroom opened straight out onto the terrace and Swimming pool. A delicious continental breakfast was laid out and waiting for us each morning at a time to suit us. Stephane was the perfect host - his knowledge of the area, coupled with near perfect English meant we could make the most of his local knowledge and great ideas of where to eat and what to see and do during our 3 days in the area. His hand drawn maps guided us at every stage - even helping us navigate a back route through the vineyards on foot to reach a very special restaurant - Le Clos Mirande. Beatrice and her gourmet chef husband have turned their beautiful home into a first class bistro with stunning views - well worth a visit if you are staying anywhere near St Emilion.
As for Chateau Saint Jacques Calon - because they only let out 4 bedrooms at anyone time....it's a true home from home experience - and a very special one at that!
