Chateau des Vigiers
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Monestier
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Having used TA for many years this is the first time I have felt compelled to comment on a hotel to avoid fellow TA readers from making the same mistake we have.
If you are thinking of staying at Chateau Des Vigiers then beware.
If you want to play golf- then you are probably OK
However, if you want to eat here then you are in for a bad experience.
We stayed 2 nights.
On the first night our experience was poor - we thought we had been unlucky.
On the second night our experience was repeated and we knew the problem was the Hotel and not us.
Fish delivered to the table not fully cooked, lamb, duck and pork all very difficult to chew were the highlights of our two bad nights.  Combined with the reheated potatoes and minimal vegetables, all in all a very poor experience.
Euro 60 for a bottle of house wine, undercooked fish and tough duck - not good value for money!
And then there are the staff.
When a customer has to send back a dish because it is still raw you might expect a simple apology or perhaps an enquiry from the maitre d' when the replacement dish arrives - was this OK?
In the case of this establishment - disinterest.
Would I stay here again - only if the room price was low enough.
Would I eat dinner here again - never.
I always think you should give a restaurant a second chance - in this case the second chance was worst than the first.
Lastly, the interest of management in a customers problems - disinterest - perhaps this is the route of this hotel's problems.

Room Tip: Le Relais rooms are a good size and well finished

Dear Sirs,

I have read your comments about our restaurant and have noted that you have been disappointed with the food and the service. I fully accept that the level of the service was not up to your expectations, especially if the dish was not cooked enough and this without any apology, this is not acceptable. Concerning the quality of our products, I cannot agree with you. Our chef selects the best products for both our Gourmet restaurant and the Brasserie and we have never had such negative comments as yours, on the contrary, we are constantly congratulated for the freshness and the quality of the products.

Kind regards,

We are not golfers but chose the Vigiers for its location and its good reviews and we were not disappointed. Our room was in the Relais and as others have said it was very spacious and the balcony overlooking the golf course was a very nice place to sit and have a drink, either tea or wine! We had everything we needed in the light, clean room and large ensuite. We found the Chateau an excellent base for visiting both Bergerac and the wine area around St Emilion. As well as eating in the Brasserie, we found a great Italian pizzeria and pasta house nearby in Eymet. The Chateau (a proper castle - not a vineyard) at Duras was an excellent visit too. We can't speak too highly of all the staff at Vigiers. They were all very helpful and efficient and gave advice with a smile. We highly recommend this Chateau.

Room Tip: The rooms in the relais are very light and airy.

We spent 4 nights there recently with our 9 year old daughter. Being temporarily down to one child, too young to be booked into a room alone, we opted for a relais room following all the helpful comments from previous residents as the rooms were supposed to be larger and we would need to have her with us. Even with a sofa bed the room still felt very spacious, it was beautifully equipped, wonderful bathroom, purpose built and full of small conveniences missing in many hotel rooms e.g. full length mirror, coat hooks. The only drawback was that we couldn't get an internet connection from the room and had to go to the main building.
We were absolutely blown away by the beauty of the chateau and its surroundings, the photos on the website, although beautiful, do not do it justice, but having tried and failed I can appreciate that it is very hard to capture on camera. It has a wonderful atmosphere, we loved to sit on the bar terrace in the evenings looking across the lake. Although there are other buildings housing guests as well as the chateau it is beautifully laid out and there is a lot of space so it doesn't seem at all cluttered. It is a very quiet and relaxing place to be.
Although it is a golf hotel we are not golfers and instead visited many of the sites in the area and went canoeing along the Dordogne river, reception are very helpful at booking and advising trips. The service in the whole hotel was outstanding, all of the staff are very helpful. The spa seems to offer a good range of treatments, but when not out and about we were happy enough relaxing around the main pool. There are 2 pools and although we visited mid August with the temperature over 30 they were never crowded. We intended to play tennis, the court was usually free, but it was too hot for us.
There is a very good gourmet restaurant which we didn't go to as we had a child with us. We ate at the bistro and would have liked to eat there all the time, but the menu is very fussy for a bistro and the children's option is smaller portions of the same food. Our daughter wanted pasta but it came with truffles and foie gras - not typical 9 year old food. As there was only 1 dinner dish she could eat, and only one for me as a vegetarian we had to eat out a lot, and it isn't an easy area to find restaurants as there are not many tourists about. The lunch menu was better. This would be my only complaint, and despite this I would still return as is such a lovely hotel, and unless you are travelling with a child and a vegetarian it won't affect you.

Room Tip: Relais rooms are modern, purpose built and very well-equipped.

Dear Madam,

Thank you so much for such nice compliments about Château des Vigiers. I am delighted to read that you had a wonderful time and that you appreciated the services that we propose.

I have also noted the comments about the choice of food for children and vegetarians and I think it is maybe more of a language problem that lack of choice. We have many possibilities for children and vegetarians with a menu that changes every evening, 3 proposals of fish every day as well as many convenient dishes “à la carte”. However, thank you for letting us know, we will insist that the staff should maybe better explain the different options that we propose.

I look forward to welcoming you again the near future,

Kind regards,

We have just returned from a weeks stay at Vigiers. We had a relais room which was wonderful, well appointed, spacious with a fabulous walk in rainforest shower. The grounds are immaculate and the rooms clean and well maintained. There are two swimming pools for guests to use. The main pool and then one at the relais block at the fitness centre. Both had plenty of sunloungers and umbrellas at all times of the day and the weather was exceptional. The staff were extremely attentive and professional without being stuffy. The food in the brasserie, although not cheap, was excellent and the male staff in particular were superb. We did not use the spa or the fitness centre but the golf and driving range were well maintained and not too busy. There were a few families with young children but generally the clientele were older couples which suited us perfectly! The chateau is located between very small towns and so you would need a car to make the most of the area. It is a great base for visiting Bergerac and the dordogne river as well as a must visit St Emillion. A wonderful stay and we hope to return soon.

We spent five nights at the Chateau Vigiers as the second of three chateau on our mini moon, and I cannot fault the place. I'd happily recommend and indeed return if circumstances allowed it. We stayed in the main chateau and had a very large room - easy to spend an extended time period in. The balcony was semi-private but was nice to have available. The rooms in the non-chateau area did seem to be more family friendly and as a young couple I'm glad we were not staying there. The golf was excellent. No trouble getting on the courses, each of which is challenging and easy in good measure. Too much of either is no fun in my view. The views from the course aren't half bad either and the weather at 30 degrees most days takes some beating. We dined at the gastronomy restaurant one night. A €14 p.p. supplement that somehow turned into €64 p.p. but once you get going with these things its hard to stop. The bistro meals (we had the half board package) were excellent although I'd urge guests to leave the resort for lunch and try the local restaurants which are by in large excellent - especially the Relais Monestier! Also, the nearby village of Soucerre (sp?) has the best dessert wine in the region, worth a visit as it is only 5km away. My wife made use of the spa facilities and she seemed to enjoy them although she said the girl doing her nails was not really very good - uhuh! The pool itself is near the bistro / club house so not really that close to the chateau which is a bit of a shame but there is not really much to be done about that. The front of house staff were excellent, they had the right measure of attention and consideration that really did make you feel like they were both happy to see you and happy to help. They should be commended. My only complaint would be the breakfast service was a bit slow. Coffee took a while as did eggs - not ideal when you're rushing for a tee off time.

Room Tip: Chateau rooms are large and worth the bit extra IMHO

Dear Sir,

I have red with attention your detailed comments about Château des Vigiers and I am delighted that you had such a good time. For your information, the close by village that makes this wonderful desert wine is called “Saussignac”. I have noted the fact that the service for coffee at breakfast is a bit slow and we will bring attention to this especially for the golfers! I look forward to welcoming you again,

Kind regards,

The Hotel complex is in a very remote part of the French countryside. All staff provide a friendly welcome and for those of us whose French is poor - they show great patience !
We stayed in the Chateau, big rooms but a bit dark with only small windows. Room nicely laid out with a long corridor giving the impression of space.
Only niggle, they provide 2 small bottles of free water on your first night only, the rest of our stay we were charged. A tip is to buy a 1 and half litre bottle from the golf shop for 3 euros.
Restaurants are both great, Les Fresques is classy but expensive, service of a high quality and the tasting menu is great and ends with a sweet course made up of 6 different deserts each !. The Brasserie is less formal and has a broad menu and the staff are very relaxed and fun.
The golf courses - 3 X 9 hole courses which means you can play different combinations - great if you are playing more than once. The greens were exceptional, the course quite long, open but tough. We look forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: We had room 21 - small windows.

Dear Sir, Madam,

It is a pleasure to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. I will pass on your kind comments to all the staff concerned.

We have taken note of your comment about the water. Unfortunately, as you will understand, we cannot make the windows in the château any bigger so may I suggest that next time you stay with us you try one of the Dependences suites, or a room in the Relais which are much lighter.

We look forward to you coming to stay with us again.

Stayed in a Relais room for a week in July and enjoyed the location very much. The rooms are very spacious with a balcony, good air conditioning, a clean and pleasant bathroom with a walk-in shower and a comfortable bed. The Relais rooms are in a separate newer block, built in an older style, a short drive from the main chateau. I ate outside at the Brasserie a few times where the food is of a high quality and the setting is delightful, overlooking he chateau, golf course and lake. Staff were generally very friendly and although I speak a little French, there were English speakers to hand when I got stuck. The location is a touch remote, which could be considered a good thing, with Bergerac a good 25 mins drive away and Bordeaux around an hour and a half.
