“Great place at Storms River Village”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2012

At The Woods is a beautiful guest house with history. We had super stay for one night only. The rooms are very spacious with a beautiful view to the mountains. The lounge and breakfast area is lovely decorated and invites for relaxing moments. The breakfast was very delicious and the friendly and helpful hosts made us feel like at home. It is one of the best guest houses we´ve stayed at and it is highly recommended.

We stayed here for 3 nights in January and it was a really beautiful guest house. The interior decoration and architecture were superb - very comfortable and spacious rooms with a briliant walk in shower. Fantastic views of the mountains from our room and breakfast area. Comfy sofas and chairs in the lounge area with plenty of interesting books if you have the time. Super choice of wine (honesty bar). Breakfast was very good and Marco and Bev were great hosts. Pretty gardens and inviting swimming pool. More sunloungers needed though - the days we were there was just one, and we laid towels out on the grass which was not all that comfortable. However, on the day we left 2 more sun loungers appeared! We loved staying here - Marco must have repaired them. The zip wire canopy tour, visiting Storms River mouth and Nature's valley - all these are a must. Dinner options are limited to only 3 in the village - Service at the Village Inn was not all that good, it was absolutely dreadful at the 50's diner, (don;t bother to go here unless your order is simple and you have about 3 hours! Best place to eat without a doubt was Rafters Restaurant at the Armagh hotel - 3 mins walk. We would have gone here for all 3 nights if we had known - good choice, lovely setting, great service and superb food. We would highly recommend staying at At The Woods and would stay there again.

Room Tip: I am sure that any of the rooms would be lovely

We have just spent two nights here. I echo all the positive comments made. I would particularly like to highlight the hospitality of the owners and Bev's father in law who spent ages helping us locate the penguin sanctuary. I thought the lounge was one of the best I had seen in a guesthouse. It is large and cosily furnished with comfortable highbacked armchairs and sofas with interesting coffee table books to browse. Internet access is good and there is a computer available for guests to use. The generous breakfast is also excellent: fruit juices, cereals, toast, lovely fruit salad and eggs. I think the property warrants a higher rating than the 3 stars allocated to it.

Practicalities: car parking is available in the front garden. The guesthouse is within a short walking distance of restaurants for dinner. Rafters at the Armagh Bed and Breakfast was particularly recommendable. The village is within easy driving distance to the natural attractions of Tstikama National Park.

Marco and Bev have made a wonderful job of transforming a former shop into a really spacious, yet warm and cosy guest house. We loved staying here and enjoyed great views to the mountains from our verandah.
This was our 5th stay on our trip and so comparisons do set in. The reason that we haven't given 'top marks' here is that we had grown accustomed to a welcome drink/cake being offered and help with luggage being offered (sometimes by young girls, not strapping blokes like Marco!!) We didn't get that kind of welcome here, Marco didn't even introduce himself, and when our room was serviced, two used glasses were neither washed nor replaced. I don't say this to be churlish because, as I have said, we loved our stay in this gorgeous house and fabulous area, but when the standard in SA is so high, details and personal touches (or the absence of them) stand out. Bev turned out to be a lovely host (I suspect our first impression would have been different if she had greeted us) and so I trust this review will be received as constructive....because At The Woods had the potential to be favourite stop of our nine stop trip!

Stayed one night, on a stop over to our Game Reserve.

Very nice location and superb views. It was a little over priced considering it's not in the national park, however the rooms was delightful with a small private seating area outside.

The breakfast was first class and there were a number of options, the view from the breakfast balcony was brilliant and the communal areas where one of the best I have seen in a guest house.

I would say that I think this accommodation is probably more suited to families than couples as there were many amenities geared towards this market, the owners also have two small children so know what is required for families.

Overall the room’s food views and owners were very good and I would recommend staying here. We had room six which was on the end and we found this to be quite private.

Room Tip: Enusre you get dinner reservations before arriving as restaurants limited in this area. We dined at...

Room 5 is lovely corner room with balcony and great mountain views. We loved too the lounge again with lots of windows and mountain views. Owner's father was delightful and looked after us at breakfast. Breakfast was lovely too. Highly recommended.

At The Woods is a relaxed and friendly guesthouse, and definitely one of our favourites on the Garden Route. Our room was simply decorated, but with everything we could have wanted in a room, and had a lovely balcony overlooking the garden. Every one of our needs was catered for by the hosts, Bev and Marco, who were lovely to chat to, truly hospitable, very knowledgable about the area and above all, excellent hosts all round. This was exactly what we were looking for in the beautiful setting of Storms River.
