“Amazing place, with fun staff and locals”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

My boyfriend and I are taking a slow drive down the garden route. I am from SA and he is from the USA, so wanted to show him the most beatiful places i used to travel with friends while road tripping back home from CPT during varsity breaks. But also wanted to show him the local culture and to experience the "real" SA without all the frills and fuss of 5 star accommodation, thus the backpackers/hostels along the route were chosen.

This place was our first stop, after the exhilarating thrill of bungy jumping, this place was a pleasant surprise. We settled into a comfy and spacious room with our own patio and private bathroom. Although there were a few funny smells and fixtures that were broken or on the frits in the bedroom and bathroom, it still had a very comfortable bed which made up for most things.
The other factor which made this place so special for us was the incredibly friendly manager Mitchell. What a legend, his local friends and him made us feel really welcome and got to enjoy their company at the bar till early hours of the morning.
Overall, if you are a young traveller and enjoy a fun and friendly atmosphere, definitely make this a stop on your garden route tour.

Room Tip: If you are couple and want a little more privacy their double ensuite room is a must!!

We (4 females) shared a dormitory for one night when we stopped over to do the Canopy Tour. Communication was good prior to our stay and all was prepared for our arrival. We were made to feel very welcome, with a lovely fire lit for us near the bar. We chose dinner in the evening where we were served a traditional braii and toast, jam and tea for breakfast. Meals were great and the self-service option made us feel comfortable. The barman was super and the gardens well kept, especially for a backpackers. I enjoyed a good night sleep and felt refreshed the next morning. The ensuite rooms looked lovely but we were happy enough with the dorms. Free wifi also. Would definitely recommend, especially if on a budget.

We had an en suite off th emain lounge, which was great except for the noise of the boiler at 4 a.m.

Balancing that, we had a great time with freindly people (depends on the rest of the crowd as the next night was quiet) - Freddy is a great guy and so are the rest of the gang. Tip them well! To our shame we forgot!

Great location, cheap, free wifi, constant fire. Very much recommended,

Not a very nice stay, mostly because of the dreadful service provided. We were not treated as guests, and found the atmosphere of the place very unpleasant.

very welcoming- very clean spacious and extremely reasonably priced- we had a double ensuite with views over the mountains and front garden. You could go for a dorm- i had a quick nosey and they were more spacious than dorms i have experienced elsewhere. There are also tent options which looked better than a groundsheet on a floor as they are raised- we had quite a bit of rain so if i was camping i think it would have appealed to be a little bit off the floor. The staff gave us a very individual briefing of some local hiking trails and a good account on where we could eat, local knowledge is key and was very useful. Its the first backpackers that i have stayed in with a very pro looking questionnaire at the end of the stay- a good opportunity to say exactly what we thought- well done and thank you!

Room Tip: we were at the top of the stairs which got a little noisy when people were coming and going so maybe...

We arrived late without reservation and were offered a room in a separate, very nice two-storey house a few hundred meters away. This house only has two large rooms (the upper with balcony, the lower with direct access to garden and terrace) and is probably meant for long-term guests - but of course also great for only one night! normally a bit more expensive (700 Rand/night), but we got it for 500. But it's worth it! Rather luxurious fully-equipped kitchen (shared between the two rooms) but each had its own bathroom. Friendly owner who organized a bottle of wine and some beers, and enjoying the evening light in the garden while having a drink was definitely great! Also the main building looks nice. Only thing to keep in mind is that the next shopping opportunity (small shop at roadside gas station - small selection and quite pricey...) is some kilometres down the highway. But overall highly recommended!

Room Tip: Rooms in separate building are fantastic - but more expensive than rooms in main building
