“Perfect stopover without breaking the bank”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2009

This was by far the best value in storms river and offered us a discount because it was off season. It had a good buzz in the bar, a good mix of people of all ages. It was the best backpackers out of the 3 we saw. The room was comfortable although cold and the sheets weren't clean. We didn't eat here but had drinks in the evening and the staff were very friendly, particularly Caroline. It was the perfect stopover to do activities in storms river without breaking the bank.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2009

I spent last weekend at the Tube n' Axe backpackers at Stormsrivier solely for the purpose of being close to the Bloukrans Bungy. My trip to Stormsrivier was hurried and unplanned; however, in the end, the weekend and my stay turned out to be a delightful experience. Andrew, the barman, and the Dutch facilities manager (so sorry, I never got her name!) were very friendly, chatty and provided excellent, prompt service. Danny's shuttle to and from the Bloukrans Bungy as well as to the Tsitsikamma National park were extremely punctual and reliable. The nights at the bonfire were warm (literally!) and friendly and I was fortunate enough to have some incredibly interesting conversations with the other guests on the weekend, both from South Africa and outside.

Of course, my review might be influenced by the fact that I had a wonderful weekend, exceeding all expectations, largely because I always tend to expect little and am quite easy to please. In an attempt to be more objective, however, here is a short summary of the pros and cons of the Tube n' Axe backpackers:

Pros -- Friendly service, efficient staff, fantastic food by Anelma (I highly recommend the veggie pancakes), towels available on hire, free coffee and tea (sugar and creamer available), good value for money for breakfast (an eat-all-you-want cereal, three types, with fruits and yogurt or milk, for 25 Rand, around USD2.5), very prompt shuttle service by Danny, pickup and dropoff location for the backpacker bus BazBus, free linen provided, HAMMOCKS! :), lovely wooden paneling and interiors, lush greenery in the yard (see photos), 2 ensuite toilets + showers (with hot water) in the Ironwood dorm.

Cons -- Shuttle service slightly pricey if you're the only one going to a certain place. I paid R 130 for a pickup and dropoff to the Bloukrans Bungy, since I was the only one doing it that day, many beds in the dorm, if you mind that sort of thing, you may struggle to sleep if it's a late night in the bar and you're in the Ironwood dorm. Ensuite bathroom looked a little dingy.

- Projection-screen movies almost every night
- Attentive and knowledgeable staff

Cons:
