“Lodge is ok, town is dead, TUBING IS A JOKE”
Reviewed February 6, 2013 via mobile

The lodge is ok but the atmosphere is nothing special, the town is also completely dead.
We went to this hostel to do the black water tubing and I can tell you it's a pure scum and joke!
First of all I think the tubing I way to expensive for the money you get.
Second of all there is no river. There is just some water with no stream in it so you have to paddle with your hands literally for 3 hours.
Third you have to walk and climb over stones even more than you have to paddle.
I was very very angry. This tubing is not adventurous at all and is a pure scum!

The town is completely dead but if you search to do something I would recommend to go to the Elvis bar down the road. It's only a 3 minutes walk!

There is no swimming pool at the lodge but the hotels around tube n axe are happy to let you swim in their pool If you just buy a drink!

Staff was not friendly at all. The Dutch girl behind the bar was just the whole time texting and not paying attention to anything. I don't understand why everybody was so positive about this place.

We stayed here to take advantage of the blackwater tubing. And didn't. It isn't cheap & when we were told by staff that
the water was low & that we would spend 40% of the time lugging the tube over rocks, we held back until we heard fellow campers reviews. To a man, they complained that they spent over 80% of the time rock crawling & the little time spent in the water was not worth it. This is disingenuous. It's over R1000 for a couple & shouldn't be promoted when it isn't worth backpackers hard saved money.
Having said that, the campsite was well kept & the showers brilliant.Tsitsikamma canopy tours were great & Xmas Day lunch at Marylins Diner was wonderful. If you're into 60's memorabilia, it's a joy to spend time with Elvis & Marylin & the genuine cadillacs.
There is no pool at Tube n'Axe, but the hotel down the road allows you to swim there if you buy a drink, which was fab.
The staff at Tube n' Axe weren't very friendly & the empty bar & outdoor fire at night laid testimony to that. Down the road is another backpackers (Njumbe?) which was very festive & welcoming, with drumming circles & activities most evenings.
The freezers in the communal kitchens were not operational while we were there, but we were allowed to use the bar freezer, although I wonder if that is the exception rather than the rule when it is busy.
We did have a great time however, thanks to the amazing people we met there. We came equipped with extra extension cables & although electricity is not offered to campers, we made it happen & shared with others who became fast friends for 30 seconds and more! ..

We joined tube and axe for the blackwate tubing that they offer and i must say i was very impressed. The equipment we used was of decent quality. A special thanks to Marius our tour leader who gave some additional facts about storms river including their industries of trade as well as pointing out the types of trees in the area. Marius was also professional in his safety briefing and has a great knowledge of the river. The food after the trip was also superb. The only thing i can knock them on was my experience in making the booking. I struggled to get confimation of our booking from the lady who made the booking. All in all this was a great experience mosty due to the staff running the blackwate tubing.

This felt more like a fine hotel, than a backpacker place. We spent the extra money and had the family room which was ensuite with a lovely little deck to watch the sunset. The room was decorated and the bathroom top notch with beautiful tiling. The communal kitchen and common area were spectacular, nicer than my kitchen at home. The outdoor braai are is large and Moses knows how to make a fire and keep the music coming. The ground are well kept and the staff very nice and helpful about what to do in the area. We hiked the Otter Path to the waterfall, worth the entrance fee to the park. Probably our favorite hike in SA.

Room Tip: The dorms in the main house are brighter than the 6 person dorm outside. The family room is pricey...

First of all I need to mention that we did not sleep at the Tube n Axe, my comments will only apply to the bar, the restaurant and the staff.
I visited Storms River with my partner who had already been there a long time ago and had kept amazing memories about the Tube n Axe, so we went there for drinks, meals, and booked a tube activity through them.
Their bar is quite nice, the pool table is good (there is a very uncomfy sofa though), the atmosphere is great, etc. Problems arise when you want to have dinner, drinks, book an activity, use the Internet or a printer with them.

They are extremely close to their money and the staff is making very obvious the fact that all they are interested in is how much you paid, could you pay more, when exactly did you pay, etc
I understand they run a business and they need to make money, but if they like to talk about it so much they should run a car rental place, not a backpackers hostel...

We only stopped over in Storms River to do the bungee jump. The two days of solid rain didn't inspire us to try any of their many other activities they organize.

Rooms:

We stayed in a double private ensuite and it was very nice. The presentation of the room was on par with a four star hotel. It was clean and spacious. The bathroom was very impressive.

Staff:

The staff was extremely nice. They realized that we were there only to do the bungee but couldn't be more accommodating. The front desk girl was very sweet and kept us up to date on the weather. (The bungee was looking like it might get canceled)

My only (small) complaint was the over excited bartender. There was only 8 people in the bar and it had been raining all day. Most people just wanted to hang out and enjoy a drink in peace. But his overexcited attitude wasn't having it. Yes he did give us some free shots that were greatly appreciated and I understood what he was trying to do (get something going). On a different day I might have been more participative, but that night I found it annoying.

Bungee:

They have a driver that takes you right to the front gate of the bungee. They point you in the right direction to get checked in and wait while you complete your jump. Then they take you back. It was quick, easy, and efficient.

I will start by saying that if all you are interested in is a place to put your head at nigth and nothing else, tube-n-axe migth be just the place for you: the rooms are big, nicely decorated and the beds are huge and comftable. If you are interested in other things, such as honesty, hospitality and you want to be treated like a guest and not like an ATM mechine, then go anywhere but tube-n-axe!!!
We, my wife and myself, stayed there for 3 nights, and here are some of the "highlights" of our stay:
1. When we first called to do the reservation, we asked for 2 nights stay in en-suite. Later on, we have noticed in their website that they have a promotion saying "stay for 3 nights and pay for 2". We were surprised that no one has told us about it, but still, happily we called and extended the stay for 3 nights.
2. Once arrived, and after seeing they have a better hut available, we asked to switch into the hut (paying 200 rand extra, of course), but the staff refused to give us the same promotion by saying that this is a new hut that is not included in the promotion and that the owner "will not agree getting less that 500 rand for it...". This despite the fact that the promotion referred to all accommodation types...
3. Later on we met other guests that stayed there for 3 nights and were asked to pay the full amount for 3 nigths just because they didnt know about the promotion...
4. The issue with the room fee was just an appetizer for the general behavior in tube-axe: they charge you for anything: the wifi and transfers (which is reasonable) but also for the tea/coffee (self prepared one),  pool & fuzeball games and even for doing a call to schedule the buz-bus ride for you!!!
5. As for services that they could not earn from, such as equippted kitchen for self-catering, they have just ignored them: the kitchen was not even close to be called equippted (we even shared a knife when eating...), it was cleaned only once during all our stay there, and was filthy and smelly. We were really disgusted to be there, not mentioning cocking our food there... And the refrigerator froze the food rather than cool it, which was quite nice when turning our yoghurt into frozen-yoghurt, but less nice when ruined our vegetables...

So, my advise for you:  if you must, use their services and do the tubing, but for your own sake, stay somewhere else...

Room Tip: Not there....
