“Horrible, dirty, expensive!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2011

Dijembe Backpackers was an awful place. I stayed there for 2 nights and I thought it was dirty, the beds weren't clean- there was hair all over my pillow and the bathrooms were filthy. I have stayed in many backpackers over the years and this is probably the worst one yet. The owner stank of booze and seemed to be in a constant daze. The girlfriend was totally cold and never once smiled. She was completely fake to me, I had a conversation with her and the next minute she went off to her German friend and said rude things about me in German behind my back. Little did she know, I understand German and can speak it!! There was no security there, and no privacy, I felt like i needed to watch my bags all the time, in case someone scratched through them and stole something! I went to the owners pizza restaurant an the place was disgusting! I could smell rotting food and there were flies everywhere. I felt sick after I ate my pizza and it was so expensive too. ---If you're going to run a backpacker, then do it properly! Keep your place CLEAN, stay SOBER while on duty, be ORGANISED, and whip your staff in to shape, it's a business not a crack den.

Room Tip: Don't go there!

Me and my girlfriend recently went on a holiday through the garden route down from PE to Cape Town.We stayed at quite a few places. Dijembe was by far the most fun and relaxing out of all of them. We were supposed to stay for three days and ended up extending our visit by four days. We did quite a few activities and the fact that you get home and it's so relaxed made the trip soooooooooo much more fun. We also had one or two nights of laughter and drinks until the early hours of the morning. It does feel like you are at home from the first second you walk in with the cowboy looking owner sticking a sherry in your hand as a welcome drink. All the staff were very friendly and helpful too. It is a rustic, fun and chilled out vibe which I seriously recommend to other travelers!!!

After a few quiet nights we were looking for a relaxed, yet cosy and comfortable place with a bar and nice people around: we found it! Had a great night at the cosy bar with the staff and guests, fire and hammock in the garden and djembe playing at the background (get lessons if you would like to learn it!). What was really amazing was the horseride trip! Wether your unexperienced or in for a wild ride: the cowboy style trip guide will take you for a suited ride. Went to the forest for a gallop, to the river for nice pics, ending in the townships and guided some kids on the horses. Amazing! Now out for chilling in the jacuzzi. Ow, before i forget to mention: the area is amazing, specially the stormsriver mouth: hike hike baby!

The first night that we stayed in Stormsriver village we stayed in Tube 'n Axe which was a commercial place and we didn't enter the place yet and they were already asking to pay for the night and we had breakfast and while we were eating they asked to pay for it immediatly. come on..... The next day we stayed at Djembe... what a nice place. We had a private double room with own bathroom... so nice. The owner was really nice and the meal that they prepared for us was really good!!! Home made bread with home made marmelade and rice with sweet pumpkin as main course and a healthy nice salad. We had dinner with the owner itself and afterwards he gave a free djembe session to us. Overall we had a wonderfull stay and will definetly return!

Dijembe has an amazing vibe created by first the rustic look and cozy house that it is. second and perhaps more importantly by the fact that it is owner run. they remeber your name and assist you in every way. Travelling in a strange country this is a neccesery and wonderfull thing to incounter. The activities are endless. Horseriding, Bungy and hiking in the Tsitsikamma. The Otter Trail and waterfull hike was awesome and Dijembe offered the Stormsrivertubing at discount as well as the bungy jump. At Dijembe I experienced each and every day the good fun and energy that flows through the house as well as lasting relaxing energy and peace after your day when you want to sleep and chill. I was ment to stay a night and stayed 7!

After a few days of rain elsewhere, to arrive here, have a convenient shuttle to the river mouth and a great walk was most welcome. The evening around the fire, the pizza delivered and the visit for songs and drumming made for a great night. Met some great people here. Of all the places we have stayed on this trip this feels most like a home away from home. Every one who works here has been very friendly and helpful. \if we ever come this way again will defintely stay again.

We had the most fantastic stay at Dijembe Backpackers. As we arrived in the picturesque little village of Storms River we knew this place would be magical. Arriving at Dijembe we were greeted by a warm fire, friendly staff and a cosy, clean and comfortable accommodation. The backpackers is one of great personality and character - clearly popular for those looking for more than just a bed for the night. We were going to jump into the bubbling jacuzzi but got far to merry (ie drunk) around the roaring fire, making new friends and reconciling with old (Jagermeister :) ). Good value for money.

The village itself is so perfectly situated for all soft and hard adventure fanatics- river tubing, forest zip-lines, nature trails, horse riding, bungy jumping (highest bridge jump in the world-eek!), forest canopy tours, restaurants…….. etc etc etc- Phew! SO much to choose from and Dijembe is on the doorstep of it all.

I have had the good fortune to stay at many backpackers around South Africa and abroad. With all the makings of an excellent backpackers Dijembe is a not-to-be-missed stop for all travelers. It is a destination/attraction on its own, not just an accommodation.

Only complaint is that I wanted to stay longer! Thanks Brad, Cobus, Gerard and all the Dijembe team!
