“Pure luxury”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

We were upgraded to this hotel from its sister hotel the Chaweng regent. At first we weren't too happy as this is a bit isolated in Bophurt where as the Chaweng Regent is right in the centre of all the night life etc. But we soon changed our mind when we were shown around our villa. To put it in 2 words pure luxury! We had a one bedroom villa which would accommodate 4 people. The bedroom was huge, the separate lounge was huge and the bathroom was even bigger. Not only was the bathroom large and beautifully fitted we also had an outside bathroom complete with toilet and 2 showers. All the fittings and furnishings were of the best quality and the marbled walls and floors added that extra opulence.
Outside we had a private pool in a landscaped garden with a cabana and teak wood furniture.
Every need was catered for from sumptuous bath robes to beach bag and flip flops for the beach.
The pool area, beach and restaurants were all of the same excellent standard. The breakfast was superb with everything you could want to eat and drink.
The staff here are very discreet but are there if you need them and you will find them helpful and attentive.
We ate once in the Kan Sat Thong restaurant which was excellent.
The only negative is that the hotel is isolated and the hotels shuttle bus to Chaweng runs at peculiar times. We resolved this problem by hiring a little scooter which was quite safe and fun!
Overall this was one of the best hotels that I have stayed in and certainly the best accommodation so I would highly recommend it.

Wonderful facilities, beautiful location, great private beach, reasonably good breakfast. Always plenty of loungers.
Could possibly improve a little on the service, nothing major but had a few experiences like:
- tried to extend stay, was told no rooms avaliable as completely full, pointed out that there were rooms on expedia, this was stubbornly refuted. went online and booked sucessfully. the kind of hassle you dont need
- minor prob with express laundry (not avaliable after a certain time, but this was not noted on form as usually is)

would stay again

on plus, our second room (the cheapest room type) had a large bath that opened up to a curtained part of balcony. was wonderful. should mention on room description as preferred it to the private pool that we had in our 1st room and much cheaper.

We booked The Melati Beach Resort for our wedding and also a special family holiday after spending much time looking through holiday brochures and looking at trip Advisor etc, We could not of asked for a more perfect choice. Every one of our 20 guests had a fantastic holiday, we were all amazed at the beautiful tropical gardens, there were gardeners constantly working on them and keeping them beautiful. All our guests loved their rooms, always so clean and always coming back to sweet treats left in the room. We had a pool villa which was perfect for us with two children as we had a room each and the children had a home theatre set up and could go to reception and borrow movies from the hotel library. Our villa backed on to the Sanctuary Pool which was always so peaceful and lovely for a quiet dip. Some of our guests had the garden pool rooms and a few other guests had grand deluxe rooms, everyone was very happy with their choice of accommodation. The staff were even more impressive than the grounds!! from the minute that we arrived nothing was too much trouble, Maria looked after us on arrival, and we got shown around the resort grounds in a golf buggy. Our children soon got to know Bang, Rain and Hunny in the kids club, they were always so welcoming and the kids made candles, decorated t shirts, did arts and crafts cooked corn on the cobs and roasted marshmallows, and on our sons birthday they had a party for him in the kids club, also at breakfast Angelo organised him a birthday cake and the staff, Gina, Pan, Arwyn,Yee and Angelo all sang to him. All the breakfast staff were fabulous, we were there for 15 days and the breakfast was fantastic every morning, nice music playing and even a cocktail if you were up for it !! We relaxed lots by the pool, Ayod from the swim up bar looked after us well at Happy Hour :-) We also had a few massages down by the pool which were only 500 THB. Our wedding was a week after arrival. We had no stress at all, our wonderful wedding planner Nadine, organised everything for us by email before we arrived. We both had massages before the big day, I had my hair and makeup done in my room, I was impressed with the hairdresser and she also did my makeup and used Bobby Brown Makeup which was fabulous. We had Thai Dancers leading our wedding procession and the Thai Drummers behind us, it was such great fun, and i think all the guests around the pool all enjoyed watching too! The beach was beautifully decorated with an arch full of roses and rose bouquets all the way down the aisle, we gave our music ipod to Nadine, and all the songs we wanted were played at the perfect time, Stuart our celebrant gave a beautiful ceremony followed by a Thai water blessing. After a toast we were whisked off for some photos, by Laurant, which we are very happy with, we then met our guests for drinks, photos and fun followed by an amazing thai buffet, which constantly got topped up, so much food!! Then the party began. We were looked after from beginning to end. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone, You have fabulous staff, beautiful gardens, a very clean private beach, 2 pools, a day spa, a gym, 2 restaurants and a pool/games room, a kids club, a warm ambiance, happy hour 3 x a day, theme dinner nights, You are 10 mins out of town but shuttles go 3 times a day or taxis always available. What more could you want,!! Thank also to the management who checked on us a few times through our holiday, and also invited us to a complimentary cocktail night for guests to meet all the staff. We will be back hopefully next year lot of love Gavin, Paula, Jacob and Emily Bicknell XX

We recently stayed at Melati. As there were 12 of us staying, we all found it amazing! The staff were wonderful and always happy and welcoming. We loved talking with the staff and found their service outstanding. Guy, Bank,Hunny and Rain were lots of fun and always friendly. As were Angelo, Emily, Gina and Jamal. We found the location good, and loved the private beach. We spent most days by the sea pool and loved happy hour in the pool bar. We are already planning to return next year. Big thank you to the Melati team.

We are currently staying here and are loving every minute of it. From the time we checked in and were greeted with a warm welcome, cooling towel and soothing drink whole we were processed for check in and yes it was a little lengthy but for a reason as they presented is with travel documents a hotel map pointing out the pools and other facilities then drove us and our luggage a whole 50meyres to our superb villa. Yes the resort is secluded maybe 20 minutes by taxi to the main beach chaweng however with its own private pool over looking the secluded melati beach with 2 resturants a swim up bar, relaxed crowd and great view then who needs other tourists anyway. We have been treated more welcoming and nicely than any other resort before and trust me I've visited a few in.my travels. Loving every bit of this resort.

Mixed reviews when it comes to this place to be honest. Pictures on their website very much deceive what it actually looks like in the flesh. We stayed here for 4 nights and I have to say that it was more than enough. The place for me can only be described as a rehab centre in the middle of a jungle. Unfortunately due to the hotels settings in the middle of a jungle, the mosquitoes are plentiful. This was partially due to the time of year but I struggle to think it would be much better any other time of the year. The hotel has a real lack of entertainment and to be fair is very boring on a night. We ventured into chaweng beach most nights during our stay which is around 30 mins away. The hotel can organise transport here for you.
We eat on a B&B basis and found the breakfast very average for a 5 star hotel. The restaurant is located on the beach and the views are awesome but like most things in this hotel its outside and the flies and heat are a problem whilst eating.
I can really only pick a few good things from our stay in this hotel. One thing has to be the beach, good choice of sun loungers and a perfect setting. Happy hour at the bar was timed perfectly with sunset during our stay, sipping cocktails at dusk as the long boats returned from their days fishing really was awesome. Another plus I took from this hotel was the large pool area and good choice again of sunbeds.
Now onto the bad, as previously stated the hotel grounds are mainly in a jungle. The pathways at night are not lit significantly so take a torch if your planning on staying here. The paths are uneven and very cobbly and sharp, this plus the darkness is a recipe for disaster. I would not like to think of the injuries you could sustain falling over. The hotel reception is outside and the check in process is beyond lengthy, be prepared with water. There was a problem at first with our room but this was quickly sorted (free upgrade for night). We had booked a junior suite and i was very pleased with the size of the bedroom and bathroom. Very clean and turn down service on a night was a nice touch. Mini bar was well stocked and there was a nice selection of other things in the room. One problem we did have was the shower cubicle was surrounded by shutters and opening these let all the insects and flies into the room, making sure these were kept closed and having to re-close them all the time after the maid had been in was a nightmare. To conclude, i don’t think i will be returning to this hotel, koh samui for sure but just a little closer to chaweng.

Dear NickandSophie,

Thank you so much for your appreciated review and please allow me to apologize if our resort was not to your liking. We work hard at pleasing our guests and we always feel bad when we fall short of expectations.

However please allow me to address some of your comments as I feel they are harsher than deserved. To call our resort a rehab facility is a bit strong. Our guests are from different walks of life some older, some younger, some with families and some on their honeymoon. We aim to please a variety of travelers and are in fact quite successful at it.

Our location being a bit off the beaten path may not have suited you and for this we apologize. However we make no secret of it. It is well advertised in all our promotional materials, including our website. In fact, our location is a very strong selling point for guests wishing peace and quiet but we understand it is not for everyone.

To call our perfectly manicured lush tropical garden a jungle is a bit over the top. Our theme of utmost privacy and giving the entire resort a hideaway factor is obviously not for you and I can empathize with this.

Mosquitoes are regretfully as part of being in the tropics, please rest assured that we are spraying our gardens on a regular basis as well as in the rooms and have natural mosquito repellent in all of our public restrooms.

To strike the right balance between peacefulness and entertainment is difficult, but rest assured we are actually addressing this issue. We are currently in the process of converting an all-purpose room near our main pool to a sports bar and lounge at night for movies and showing sporting events. This is conducted without intruding on the peaceful character of our resort.

I am truly sorry if you have selected the wrong venue for your vacation as I know how precious vacations are. However we truly do not deserve the rating you have given us. Thank you again for taking the time to share.

Sincerely,

Daniel G. Fuchs

Reviewers who say this is luxurious and 5 star have obviously not stayed at a true 5 star hotel. I would grade it a 3 and a half to 4 star property. Previous to staying at the Melati we had stayed at the Shangri-La in Bangkok and The Chedi in Chiang Mai - those are what a 5 star hotel is all about. The Melati is tired looking, the lobby and restaurant areas need a revamp, the buffet breakfast is ok but don't eat dinner there; probably one of the worst meals we have eaten anywhere and very expensive; 990 baht ++ for a rib eye steak which was overcooked and tough and tasted like a cheap piece of stewing steak. The resort is very spread out and if you are unlucky enough to get a room at the lobby end of the resort it is a very long walk to the pool and the beach and main restaurant. Ask for a room near the main pool. Rooms were pleasant enough but housekeeping often forgot to replace towels or amenities. Also disappointing is they tell you they provide a shuttle service but they charge for this and it's not cheap. And it only goes into Chaweng 3 times a day; the first one not being until 1 o'clock in the afternoon. If you want to get a taxi you have to order it at the lobby and the hotel takes a cut from that as well. They charge a minimum of 300 baht and the taxi driver only gets 200 baht. Other 5 star hotels have a concierge that will call up a taxi as part of their service and you pay the taxi driver direct. We took a look at other 5 star hotels while there as we were so disappointed with what we got at the Melati. The Akaryn is beautiful and has a great steak restaurant if you want a change from Thai, The Napasai is another beautiful one and probably the best of all is Vanna Belle by The Luxury Collection.
So disappointed that we are going to let our travel agent, who recommended it, know so that she doesn't sell this resort to anyone else wanting a true 5 star resort holiday.

Room Tip: Definitely request a room near the main pool and beach; Rooms 701 or 703, or Rooms 506 or 507

Dear Dianne R,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at Melati Beach Resort & Spa. We were truly saddened by some comments and dubious towards others; while we appreciate the effort put in such a detailed review, we feel it is more creative writing than an overview of your stay.

First and foremost, I would like to apologize to the 400 odd reviewers who have written positive comments, for the assumption they are clueless about the real characteristics of a 5 star resort. I’m confident several travelers are grateful for your insights, but this could have easily been achieved without sounding condescending.

I am sorry you had the experience described in your review, but find the embellishments quite disconcerting. The quality of our Rib Eye or any other meat cut is utterly irreproachable. Your lack of affection for us clearly disturbed your taste buds. Indeed, we do have more than 12 acres of gardens, but the other resorts you praised so highly are in fact as large and spread out as Melati. After investigating your taxi comment, the company hired of your own volition, is not contracted by Melati Beach Resort & Spa. Reviews written in frustration seldom consider fact checking; sensationalism makes for a better story.

We may not always achieve our goal to “Indulge the Senses”, we do in the majority of our guest experiences. Again, thank you for your review; we are sorry that your stay with us did not meet expectations.

With Kind Regards,
Daniel G. Fuchs
