This was our 4th visit to Samui, our first time in Bophut, we have always enjoyed it here, but wow! this was a breath of fresh air from the normal hotel experience. From the minute we arrived at Samui airport to be met by Ron (the manager) a charming personable guy, we were treated to a complimentary drink on checking in, after a nice little tour round Fishermans Village.
The Waterfront was even better than we viewed on the Internet and we had a terrific Bungalow
with the most stunning view. Breakfast on the deck each morning is cooked to order and we had other meals during our stay (12 nights) all of which were delicious ( thank you " Cooking")
A big thank you to all the wonderful staff, simply gorgeous, friendly and fun people.
Congratulations to Sue and Robin for making all guests feel so very welcome at your superb
Waterfront Hotel, we will be returning next year at the same time, hopefully to catch up with all
the fun people we met around the bar in the evening before we hit the street, we usually ended up at The Hut, a fabulous authentic Little Thai across the road although the choice of Restaurants is huge. Our days were spent checking out the shopping and great little bars in the village, walking on the beach and cooling off in the sea or pool. Roll on 2013.

This was our 5th visit to the Waterfront (ironically, as we always vowed never to return to a holiday destination) So why do we do it ? Well, read the Tripadvisor reviews and you'll get the picture. It's wonderful and it can be whatever you want it to be.For us a typical day begins with a divine bacon and salad baguette overlooking the bay followed by a stroll along the often deserted beach returning to catch up with the news from home with a copy of the Daily Telegraph. Then relaxing with a book around the pool before an afternoon walk through the village for a coffee and people watching at a street cafe. (ps :unlike other Thai resorts no girly bars or hassle from hawkers in Bophut). Then perhaps take in the vista at the Reggae bar while listening to Westlife(yes -strange !) or time it right for a Happy Hour pint of Singha at the Frog and Gecko while deciding where to eat in the evening from a diverse choice of ethnic restaurants(special praise to the 'Hut' - 2 courses and drinks for under £10) before returning for a chat and inevitable laughter around the bar at the Waterfront.
What makes it so special are your fellow guests who have also read the Tripadvisor reviews(special thanks this year to Michael, Maureen et al) and of course once again to Robin,Sue and family and their happy cheerful staff for whom nothing is too much trouble ( typically Sue provided red roses for Valentine's Day). It really is a 'house party' atmosphere amongst friends old and new.
So is it worth travelling over 16 hours from the UK for what this year could only be an 8 night stay ? You bet it is ! Forgetting our principles we will, of course be back. We want more of the same and yes Robin I'm looking forward to being up in the early hours watching Norwich play in Europe next year !

Our 2nd visit to Bophut, and 1st stay at The Waterfront. We booked the "honeymoon" deluxe room which was ground floor with an idyllic view of sea, and island of Ko Phangan. The room was very spacious, and well equipped, with plenty of little extras (plug adaptor, torch, unbrella). Although it was not an all singing and dancing 5 star hotel, Robin, Sue, and all the staff gave us a 5 star welcome, and it was so friendly and more personal due to having 18 rooms. We ate lunch on our first day, and the food was excellant, particulary the chicken and cashew nuts - large portion and big pieces of chicken. I can understand that for some first time visitors to Thailand this boutique hotel may not suit someone looking for a more traditional Thai style hotel, however this was ideal for us and we enjoyed our stay at the Waterfront much more than our stay at a larger 5 star hotel last year in Bophut (and price was much better) It was so much nicer being able to eat breakfast on the terrace, overlooking the sea, with a handful of other guests, rather than queuing up in a large busy restaurant, struggling to find a seat. We will certainly stay at The Waterfront again, if we return to Bophut

Room Tip: Honeymoon/deluxe room recommend.

my wife and i have just returned from our first trip to koh samui and the waterfront and I have to say that we loved the whole experience. Sue and Robin are great hosts and have a staff headed by Ron the hotel manager who are brilliant we were so well looked after. Loved the atmosphere of fishermans village which we visited every night for food and drink We are already making plans for returning next year.

The Waterfront is a lovely place, and I can understand that it attracts many positive reviews. However, I think it is important to note that it is ideal for a certain type of holidaymaker, and may not suit everyone. I'm not sure, overall, that it's TA rating reflects that.

If you are a returner to Thailand, looking for somewhere that is effectively a "home from home", where you plan to do very little except lie in the sun, dip yourself in the pool and chat to fellow guests, then I agree that the Waterfront is the perfect place to do it. Ideal location very close to Fishermens' Village and access to many restaurants and bars.

However, this property is very basic, and absolutely lacks any elegance or style. The "beach view bungalows" are effectively portacabins, and quite small, and the pool is functional rather than inviting. I have some sympathy with the reviews which suggest the hotel is reminscent of an English seaside holiday camp! If you've never visited Thailand before, or are looking for somewhere that is decorated or landscaped in the Thai style, there are many other charming and better value properties in the vicinity. For me, that's part of the attraction of Samui, and several beachfront hotels in and around Bophut do this so well. The Waterfront is clean but has no charm.

I cannot criticise the Waterfront, or its owners, because they do not try to be something they are not, and clearly take great trouble to look after their guests. But I do think all of the rave reviews ought to be balanced with something that makes it clear that if you don't fit into the mould of their "typical" guests, then I'd consider looking elsewhere. For instance, the Peace Resort, Baan Bophut and Saboey are all comparable prices (or were when we booked) and are much more attractive.

We had a lovely relaxing two week stay over Christmas and the New Year at the Waterfront. It was our family’s seventh time to stay at the Waterfront and Robin and Sue and their son and daughter, Michael and Charlotte, and all their lovely staff made us feel so welcomed that it felt like we were coming home.
We again stayed in the family suite that has two large size bedrooms and a lounge area all air-conditioned with TV and DVD. There is a well stocked mini fridge and tea and coffee making facilities and also now free Wi-Fi internet.
We had stayed at the Waterfront the previous Christmas when the weather was glorious but unfortunately on this trip the weather was rainy and cloudy. There are usually beautiful views across the water to Koh Phangan but this time the island seemed to have disappeared!. Eventually towards the end of our holiday the sun did came out and Koh Phangan appeared like Brigadoon from the mist.
The Waterfront really lived up to its name on Christmas day when the gardens flooded but did not stop us all having a great time with all the guests drinking Bucks Fizz at the bar followed by Christmas Lunch with roast turkey and all the trimmings at Classico restaurant just a short walk up the road. We went there again on New Years Eve for dinner followed by singing Auld Lang Syne and then a spectacular firework display along the beach.
There are even more restaurants and bars along the street these days especially on the east end towards the Waterfront. The Friday Walking Street gets packed with different stalls each side of the street selling clothes, jewellery, handicrafts and lots of food and drinks. One good outcome of the Friday Walking Street is that the local council has now installed proper drainage and street lights at this end of the village so no more tiptoeing through puddles in the dark after a late night in the Billabong or Frog and Geko pub.
The two weeks flew by and we were sad to leave again and our 9 year old daughter was close to tears as all the staff she has known since she was a two year old gave us all goodbye hugs.
Over the last ten years we have stayed in lots of hotels in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Tanzania but none have the special ambience of the Waterfront. The wonderful relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings make the place like a home from home and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

Every employee and every aspect of The Waterfront is perfect. I was alone and in the area for my niece's wedding and felt right at home and with family at this great hotel.ZW
