“We don't need alot, but need better than this.”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

I've written 6 to 8 reviews on our trip to Thailand and this is my first bad one. We're not needy and we don't need much but we were disappointed with our stay at Al's Hut.

Service - the lady at the front desk was reasonably helpful but that was it. The bar staff, cleaners, gardeners etc were pretty useless. After cleaning the room next door the staff sat outside their door (and ours as they were connected) and had a chat. Strange. When we walked past and I said hello, we got no response.

Food - we only had breakfast here and it was ordinary.

Room - our mattress was like a rock, beds are firm in Thailand but this was ridiculous. The A/C remote wouldn't work so it was arctic or nothing. The sheets and pillows were covered in stains and the shower fixtures looked like an afterthought.

The pool is right on the beach and quite nice, but the resort is 2 doors down from a massive beach club called the Ark Bar that plays deafening euro dance all day. Oh and if you've never been to Chaweng the planes take off over your head every hour or so.

We only stayed here one night and Al's Hut was chosen by our Travel agent... perhaps compared to other places right in Chaweng beach this is good value, but that I can't say.
Personally im not sure why you'd want to stay in Chaweng anyway! Bophut/The Fishermans Village is on the other side of the Island 2km away, with good access to everything but much nicer and quieter.

We stayed on Koh Phangan in a room with a bed, bathroom and a fan, nothing else and loved it. It was simple, cheap and comfortable, exactly what a budget place should be and exactly what this isn't!

Room Tip: Forget paying extra for beach front, the standard rooms are the best value

This is the second time I've stayed here and actually it was better second time round, because since my last stay they have added a great pool right on the beach and kept the prices the same.
For those who don't know Chaweng, it is very hard to find anything cheap, decent and central. You often pay a lot for very little in return in hotel blocks that have no soul and no Thailand charm or appeal.
Yes the huts are small, but they give you privacy and you at least you can't hear your neighbours upstairs or next to your room. The idea is you won´t spend much time in your hut anyway. You can chill out on your terrace with nice beer, you can walk directly to the beach and the pool and walk to the main strip within seconds. Seriously, what more could you ask for at that price? I would recommend the place for younger guys though, as it is very near to the Ark Bar and the music can go on till quite late, but if you're part of the party, it's just a few minutes walk back home.
When we were there they were just closing for a major refurbishment, so let's see what that brings, maybe a revamp of the bathrooms and the inside of the bungalows...
I would keep coming back even if they did not make any changes. It's great value, great location.
For those who are picky, all I can say is don't go for the hut or bungalow option in Thailand as you will get smells, bathrooms that are not pristine, insects etc. Just go for a hotel instead and leave the huts to those who appreciate them!
To the new Als Huts owners: Don't change the place too much! I want to come back.

Room Tip: Try and get a hut nearest to the beach

I've never felt the need to write a hotel review before but I feel that Al's Hut has been bad mouthed by people who pay little and expect a lot.
The place is advertised as being a hotel that connects you with nature, therefore you cannot expect to have 5* accommodation! It's like booking a camping trip in the UK and complaining that it rains, inevitable, if you want more than 3* then pay for it!

The pool is clean and lovely to swim in, you have a great view of the beach, there are always loungers spare around the pool and there are more loungers on the beach, we prefered to stay by the pool so the local sellers didn't hassle us, they aren't that bad, just say no and they carry on walking. You can have a massage on the beach just outside the hotel too.
The rooms were very clean and the air con wa great, the bathrooms are very dated but if they were more modern they wouldn't fit in with the theme of the hotel, staying in a hut. The shower is hot, the toilet flushes and the water runs, what more do you need? There was no safe in our room but you can use one in reception if needs be, we are used to hiding valuables in rolled up pairs of socks, under the tv etc so we just did as we usually do. There was no threat of being broken into, the doors are secure when locked and there is a security guard wandering the property 24/7. Also there are so many members are staff nobody can walk onto the premises unless they are staying here.
The street in front of the hotel is busy day and night, day time there are plenty of shops and market stalls to explore, there are bars, cafes and restaurants as well as supermarkets and pharmacies. Taxi stops are just out the front and you can get a taxi to the big Buddha for 200 baht (£4).
There is a bar next door that plays loud music at the beginning of the week for all the ozzy tourists but it doesn't stop you sleeping.
In the evenings if you walk left of the hotel along the beach there are loads of nice places to eat, the seafood is delicious and very cheap, cocktails cost 100 baht (£2), you sit right on the beach, if you go before sun set you can watch it happen or you can just enjoy the lights at night.
The breakfast at the hotel is good, they cook fresh omelettes at your request with the ingredients you like. There is choice of continental and cooked, including pancakes and Thai noodles.
The staff are really friendly and very helpful, the guard carried our bags to our room.
THERE IS WIFI, just ask at the desk and you can have 7 days for 300 baht (£6) or 24 hours for 100 baht (£2).
If you enjoy the sun and having all amenities close by, this hotel is perfect for you. If you are expecting a grand entrance with 10ft fountains and your name written in lights across the door then I suggest you extend your price range.

We booked here for four nights, on our day of arrival we were shown to the room, and all I can say is we got the instant feeling that we wanted to leave. The place had a weird smell that was unbearable, the shower bathroom area was disgusting and looked like no human should use it!! We instantly went to reception to see if we could upgrade, which was not an option. We outsourced another hotel 5 mins up the road that was incredible! I def recommend spending the extra money and staying somewhere nice.

We stayed in Al's Hut whilst travelling in Thailand, it was cheap, affordable and a great location.

The rooms (huts) were very cute and cosy, very basic but have everyhting you need.

Staff were helpful. Menu in the restaurant was varied, cheap and tasted great!

The location is great as its a 30 second walk to beach!! The beach is beautiful, loved every minute!!

Would definitely stay there again and recomend it to travellers or anyone wanting value for money accomodation.

I stayed here 1 night... OMG, this is the perfect hotel to stay if you love Chaweng Beach & Nightlife. They got beachfront. Near to ARK Bar, near to the beach, to the clubbing street. I love it.!! They also got nice swimming pool... But for wifi, you need to buy a voucher from the counter...

This place was actually recommended by a biker friend. Unfortunately, we found this hotel unfit for human habitation. On arrival, we saw the huts similar to little Disney cartoon mushroom homes! Inside however, they were small, old, insecure and in need of repairs. There was no safe in the room and the door seems to have been pried many times. The deadbolt did not work. There was no WiFi. The swimming pool which was really a large water tank in blue tile was unfit to swim in. The was no filtration. The coup de grace was the sewer system and drains. The stench was unbearable. There was a collection of waste water right next to the restaurant and the bar. We felt like throwing up during the b'fast. We complained to the management and all they could say was 'we understand and we are sorry'. We tried to cancel our stay and move to another hotel but we were discouraged and provided another facility they own a few hundred meters away.
That hotel was more bearable but again the swimming pool was not managed well. there was no filtration. I got very sick swimming there. Al's Hut should be shut down. This second place can do with some repair but needs the pool services everyday and has to have filtration so the water is kept safe. Would I recommend, heck No.

Room Tip: My ratings are an average to both facilities. Al's Hut should be shut down and the owners charge...
