“Exceeded Expectations!”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

We arrived at night and first impressions were magical. Room was unique, and the overall decor was Morrocan in style. An aura of calmness was created by soft music and exquisite lighting; and the bed and pillows conducive to deep sleep. The gardens did not feel artificially landscaped; on the contrary they were lush and tropical. The beach was interesting because next to the hotel was lots of activity by local fishermen and community. The swimming was safe and pleasurable. The Spa treatments were given by therapists generous with their time and skill. Breakfast was wonderful and the dining experience special. We felt totally relaxed by the end of our holiday!

Room Tip: We might have had an early morning swim had our room been facing the sea. And we understand that if...

My Chinese wife and I both loved Zazen and will definitely be returning. The service was as good as I have had in Asia, we loved the outside toilet, and the decor and design were beautiful. Although the beach wasn't quite as beautiful as other places on Samui, it wasn't as dirty and crowded as others, and it was the only one I didn't find any broken glass on.

The rooms feel spacious and secluded amongst the native flora and the decor complimented this perfectly. This place has everything you need for true rest and relaxation.

Beautiful resort with stunning gardens on beachfront. Rooms were really different with outside bathroom but tastefully decorated, very comfortable. I do feel when they turn down the beds they should change towels etc and tidy up,and make sure you have enough coffee and tea. But by saying this yes I would stay here again so relaxing just beautiful. The breakfast buffet was fabulous.
I do recommend this resort the best !

Room Tip: Deluxe garden bungalow no7 close to beach also view of beach from patio. I Beachfront bungalows to...

We have just had our wedding at the Zazen in Bophut and it was the most beautiful and perfect day, I've stayed at some top hotels across the world and the Zazen certainly ranks in the top. Firstly I want to say how amazing Ame the wedding coordinator has been and Charles the food and beverage manager was also superb. My wife and I could not have wished for a better wedding and this was all put on by the wonderful staff at Zazen. I can't quite believe the review below. I actually think some people go on holiday and will never be happy.
ALL beaches in Samui are slightly grainy, this is the type of sand here. The beach is fine, it's clean and it's sand - it moves when you walk! If you want white powder beaches then go to Bora Bora. Rant over let me tell you about the hotel, the staff are excellent, all of them knew our names and what room we stayed in, nothing was too much trouble. The food was superb, in London I would happily pay £200 for the standard we had if not more. The breakfast was the best tasting food I have ever eaten in a hotel. The pool is small but I was the only person in for most of the days we were here. The location on the beach was perfect, I could walk 2 metres to the beach and 5 to the sea from our room. On the days we wanted to go for a nice walk it took 15-20 mins to get to fishermans village, if you want a taxi it was £4. The hotel is beautifully laid out and our friends who stayed in hotels nearby all were very jealous when they came to our wedding, we had people from Canada, Oz and UK and they all said the food, the staff and everything at the wedding was amazing! The zazen spa was the best massage I've ever had and well worth what we paid for it. It was more than most Thai massages but still less than London. The staff were cleaning the beach daily so can't see how it was dirty! As for the bathroom I didn't have any problems and there was a giant can of mozzie spray to use to ensure they stayed away, this was of course complimentary. The room was ample size for 2 of us, we had 3 cases between us and on the day of the wedding there was my lovely wife, 2 bridesmaids and 2 others so 5 people getting ready plus 2 hair and make up artists and plenty of room. My wife suffers from severe IBS and on our last day she needed to go to hospital so she could get some pain relief, the hotel were superb and quickly drove us straight there with no cost and were very attentive when we returned 2 hours later, we will always remember our stay at the Zazen and be grateful for us having the best time of our lives here. I will upload some pictures so you can see for yourself how lovely the hotel is. We will be returning here hopefully sooner rather than later. Thanks again Ame, Charles and all the wonderful staff. You were amazing. Ben and Kylie.

Room Tip: If you want to be on the beach then stay here.

I have to agree with most of what the reviewer below has stated.

Room:
-Beachfront bungalow
-Small and cramped for what is supposed to be the more premium option
-There wasn't anywhere to put our luggage without it getting in the way
-View obstructed by a gazebo and rows of sun-loungers directly in front
-Open bathroom looked nice, however it is a mozzy magnet and you WILL get bitten
-The door lock for the bathroom was broken - not great for room safety as someone could potentially climb in via the bathroom and walk straight into your room.

Beach/Location
-Beach has course sand and isn't comfortable to walk on.
-Right next to an inlet.
-Next to a few budget hotels which brings the location down.
-Long walk to Fishermans village and you sink into the sand quite a bit along the way, which makes it more tiring.
-Lots of debris washed up on shore (the hotel next door kept sweeping it back into the sea - that's the level of hotel you'd be next too - urgh).
-Sea was quite choppy and water wasn't clear.

Staff
-Counter staff were lovely and always made an effort to help and say hello.

Food
-The breakfast was really good, giving you a choice of freshly cooked options.
-Pastries were good quality
-Good selection
-They even give the option of a glass of fizz as part of the drinks selection

Other
-There was a wedding during our stay, which we were informed of the night before, however it was taking place right in front of the beachfront bungalows which meant you couldn't really sit outside. The main part of the hotel beach was roped off for most of the day. No compensation was offered to make up for this.

Overall - I'd probably not recommend Koh Samui as a whole, however this hotel was ok... there were redeeming points, however if you're looking for a luxury hotel in a beautiful location I would recommend going to another island.

Room Tip: Although I didn't stay in a garden room, they did look bigger and more private.

Dear Katsuki,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Trip Advisor.

We are sincerely sorry to read that you did not fully appreciate your stay in Zazen. We however are delighted to have your constructive feedback which will most certainly allow us to improve our service standards.

Your remarks regarding the room size is understandable. Indeed, our Garden Villa is bigger and quieter, but the Beach Front offers a direct beach access, which is quite rare in Samui. In term of luggage, we offer large spaces below the lounge Sofa to allow more space in the room and our reception team is delighted to store your luggage in the reception area as well. Every single room category is fully described in our website with floor plans and size in square meters. We suggest readers to check our room category and discover our rooms and facilities.

The door lock of the bathroom has been fixed a couple of minutes after we read your comment which would have been done as fast if you would have contacted the reception.

It is very unfortunate that you did not like the beach in rainy season, when the waves bring seaweed. the water is not as clear as the rest of the year as well. You probably did not know that it was rainy season at that time. Nevertheless our team of dedicated beach boys do their utmost to constantly clean the beach while providing personalized service to our guest, including complimentary drinks, fruits skewers and cold towels. The surrounding budget hotels are indeed very unfortunate; however they accommodate decent and quiet people unlike other areas of Samui such as Chaweng or Lamai.

A wedding ceremony did take place during your stay for one hour. We are very sorry if this has affected your stay as you could have also stayed at the pool area or on the other side of the beach for this short period.

We are deeply sorry that you would not recommend Koh Samui as a whole and we sincerely hope you will give it a second try as we all consider the island to be a little piece of paradise. Again, the rainy season may not have helped you to fully appreciate what Samui can offer.

Thank you again for your very detailed feedback which we already have shared with the team, which will strive to improve our overall performance.

Kindest regards

The Management team.

We booked after the review here and the - very shiny - images on their webpage.

And: the place itself looks great (if you don't go to the beach), there are a lot of details in the garden(s), everything lookes lovely and nice.
But:
- the beach is too small and not clean at all
- the rooms are way to small (we had a beach bungalow for the view and it is a shame that they are that pricey for the space they offer
- the idea of an "open" bathroom is stupid in an area with tons of mosquitos, they didn't even covered the open area with some nets
- the bathroom hummed like faeces every time you used the toilet (after complain bitterly at the reception they just responded "we know" - yeah, perfect response for the price)
- the pool was a joke
- far to little loungers
- and so on and so on and so on.....

In short: a catastrophy.

The only thing that could help now after the disappointment with the location is the staff. But they failed miserably. They barely smiled, they barely made some jokes and everyone was stiff and serious all the time.

Our idea of the target group of the hotel was as followed: people who want to be blinded with fancy stuff and treated the same unfriendly way they are treated at home and spend a lot of money for it.

They even wanted to rip us of with some staff from the minibar we did not take and some water at the restaurant we did not order. A lot of discussions at checkout.

Any plus? Well... the food was nice. Not the breakfast which was way to european (and the stupid anti-fly-covers on everything at the breakfast really sucked. There are no flies in the morning. There are only mosquitos in the evening.... aaaaargh, god knows why they put them there. Maybe it has something to do with the target customers).

Another plus? Yeah, one more: The motorcycle hut was roofed. You did not burn your butt in noon sun.

Dear Lars,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Trip Advisor.

We are sincerely sorry to read that you did not appreciate your stay in Zazen.

It is very unfortunate that you did not like the beach in rainy season, when the strong waves bring seaweed for a limited period. You probably did not know that it was rainy season at that time. We suggest you to actually check the weather report before you book your next holiday. Nevertheless our team of dedicated beach boys do their utmost to constantly clean the beach while providing personalized service to our guest, including complimentary drinks, fruits skewers and cold towels.

Every single room category is fully described in our website with floor plans and size in square meters. Considering you have checked our website beforehand, I am sure you were aware of this. We suggest readers to check our room category and discover our rooms and facilities.

You mention that the idea of open bathroom is stupid. Thank you very much for your nice words, which were surprisingly allowed by Trip Advisor. Our owners, who designed the hotel, are delighted that you find them stupid and are however glad that 470 reviewers disagree with you. Indeed, in Zazen we strive to offer a tropical experience to our guests as described in our website (which you have read). The “stupid” idea of open bathroom is offered in many tropical locations such as Bali, Phuket, Fidji, Maldives and many others, which is praised by most of the travelers.

The bathroom problem is indeed not acceptable and thanks to your constructive comment, our team has already fixed the problem. The behavior of our reception is also very surprising as they usually are very friendly and helpful with everyone’s of our guest issues as you can read in many reviews. We will however take immediate actions to improve their attitude.

Your remark regarding the pool has not been understood by the team. Could you please further explain what you mean with “a joke”; our pool features treated water, a Jacuzzi and a kid pool, all of those being extremely serious. Our maintenance team checks the water quality every morning and our beach boys provide full service around the pool. Please note as well that at the beach and the pool we totalize around 50 loungers, which has proven to be sufficient to accommodate our 26 rooms.

Your comment regarding the smile of our team has been taken into consideration and further training has already started in order to improve their friendliness. However, our staff is not instructed to make jokes but to provide steady professional service with a friendly attitude should the guest be receptive to it.

Your idea of Zazen target group is interesting; I apologize to all of our guests who may feel insulted by such a comment. I am as well very sorry that you are treated in an unfriendly way at your home, which may not be the case of everybody.

Please note that our breakfast is intended to suit everyone’s need. We offer our guest “a la carte” breakfast featuring American, English, French and over 20 Thai alternatives. We as well offer a buffet with salads, cold cuts, fresh tropical fruit, juices, sparkling wine, homemade bread and viennoiseries…. I sincerely apologize that you have not found anything suiting your morning desires. We indeed cover the buffet with Balinese style nets avoiding tropical animals/insects to contaminate the food. Once more the management team is glad to learn that you find this to be a stupid idea, and we will let readers to judge whether it is stupid or not.

In conclusion, we will definitely take into consideration this very constructive comment. Needless to say that our team is extremely offended by the tone of your comment, as insults are usually not adapted to the Thai culture. We are very sad that you did not enjoy your stay with us, but we are extremely disappointed that you did not find the courage to directly come and talk with the management during your stay or upon check out. When checking your satisfaction on regular basis, there was no sign of frustration nor dissatisfaction thus we are a little surprised about your online feedback.

I sincerely hope that you come back to us to provide with more accurate details, of your disappointment. In the meantime, trust that we will take into consideration your remarks which will most certainly help us to improve our standards. Again we sincerely apologize about your “catastrophic” experience.

Sincerely

The Management team

My first time in Thailand and Zazen was a great example of Thai service and hospitality in a very romantic setting.

Our bungalow was right on the beach, with an "outdoor" bathroom (well stocked with toiletries), a big comfortable bed and nice decor. The buffet breakfast was probably one of the best I've ever experienced and the gardens and outdoor space are beautifully landscaped.

Only criticism was that, a wedding on the beach directly outside our room on one of the days of our stay meant that our access to the beach was limited and the whole bar area was "out of bounds" for the evening. Other than that we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend.

Dear Jacky Hobson,

We wish to express our sincerest appreciation for choosing Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa for spending your holiday.

We are glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us, and your comments have been shared with the team. Regarding the wedding that took place this day, we apologize if this may have affected your stay. Indeed, during this season the tide comes quite high and our beach area may be smaller than usual, thus reducing the space on the beach more when conducting ceremony. Again, our deepest apologies if this has in any way bothered you.

Many thanks for the feedback and we hope to see you soon in Samui!

With best regards,
