“A tranquil haven”
Reviewed May 30, 2014

We stayed here for 5 days after a busy week working in Singapore. We knew it would be lovely, but it was far better than expected. The service was discreet yet attentive and very personal. They even remembered how we liked our coffee each morning. The villas and the infinity pool were unsurpassable. We have been to some amazing hotels around the world, but we felt happier here than virtually anywhere. It was a lovely experience. The food at the restaurant on the rock was really memorable. The staff were without exception delightful, happy and couldn't do enough to help. It was peaceful, romantic and a true escape in the most beautifully designed resort. We were really upset to leave.

On our very first night at the Six Senses Samui, we were working out how quickly we could come back...it's that good. This was the 3rd stop on our honeymoon and we stayed for 4 nights in a sea view hideaway villa. The villa wasn't huge, but they have thought of everything to make your stay perfect...umbrellas by the door in case of rain, raincoats in the bathroom, the ability to choose a 2 hour timeslot for maid service, choice of essential oil for your pillow, a selection of glassware hidden away in case you use the minibar, beach bag in the closet....it just made everything so easy. Our villa had floor to ceiling windows looking out to the stunning ocean view, so good that it would be a crime to ever close the blinds. The bathroom was large with a sunken bath and outdoor shower, and we had a large decked area downstairs with loungers, benches and a table for dining, again looking out to sea.

The resort itself is large, yet each villa is well spaced and feels very private, and there is a buggy service on a continual loop to take you to each area if you don't want to walk.

Food was excellent, so much so that we only dined out once (and regretted it as it wasn't a patch on the hotel). Breakfast is vast and covers all the bases - both thai and western. Evening meals at DIning on the Hill were authentic and good value for a hotel of this kind. Cocktails at Drinks on the Hill were excellent, as was the service.

On arrival you are assigned your own butler for the duration of your stay, ours was Song and she went out of her way to make sure everything about our stay was perfect and we found it handy to have a point of contact for any questions - ranging from how to make the air con work to re-arranging spa appointments.

The spa is out of this world, with each treatment room having a view out to sea. I had only planned to go once and ended up in there every day. Yes. you can have a far far cheaper massage outside the resort, but you certainly wouldn't get the same experience.

One of the highlights of our stay was our private cooking class with chef Pakob. She was an absolute star and gave us lots of insight into thai cuisine, and helped us cook up 3 amazing dishes. She is a credit to the hotel.

The pool - quite simply the most stunning I have ever seen, even in brochures. We were tempted on arrival to upgrade to a pool villa, we were advised to go and have a look at the pool before deciding. As soon as we saw it we knew there was no point upgrading as a tiny plunge pool just couldn't compare.

Location is fairly remote, with a small fishing village around 10 mins drive away. The hotel have their own taxi service, cost for this was around the same as you would pay for the island taxis.

We left to go to a hotel on Koh Phangan which had a much higher rating on tripadvisor than six senses and where we had the best room in the resort, and we longed to be back at the Six Senses. Yes there are a few things that they could do differently - air con in the bathroom for one, but all are minor and nothing that would stop me going back.

A great hotel, I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Try and get a sea view room

Dear Sarah

Thank you for your fantastic elaborate review and it's clear that you had a brilliant time. We have informed Khun Song & Pakob of your great feedback and it was well received. You are quite right that our infinity pool is by far the best on the island and one of the best in the country and not to be missed. Our remote location (15 min) away from the noise and mas tourism is part of our charm and we are delighted that you did not feel this was an issue. We are really happy that we provided the perfect holiday spot for you and we are looking forward to welcoming you back here in the near future .

I guess its inevitable we were slightly disappointed as our only other Six Senses experience has been the incomparable Soneva Fushi in the Maldives. We popped up to Koh Samui for a mini break of diving and general pampering; we were met and the airport and whisked away to our split level hill top room, with downstairs plunge pool hewn into the rocks, where an array of tasty tidbits awaited our arrival (it was late). The hotel was pretty empty so it felt rather cavernous but it meant we got undivided attention and service at all our meals; a private cookery class and very small yoga groups in the morning and a spa treatment. At every turn the service was smiling and charming; it is a shame that the signature restaurant Dining on the Rocks was decidedly below par for the noise and expense it generates (see separate review). The Thai food is good, and the meal we cooked for our class was the best we ate! Thank you Pakob! The hotel is showing signs of its age, and some of the design and decor is a bit faded. However, I dont really rate Koh Samui as a destination - we hired a motor bike to go round the island and found it to be a long strip of seedy bars and restaurants, with little green to recommend it, and where there was it was hard to access without paying (eg the waterfalls). The hotel beach was over-looked and hot, and really not a patch on what I imagine an idyllic Thai beach to be. But it is close to Singapore and for that reason we may be back for the odd weekend although there are I'm sure other good spots to relax in just as close.

Room Tip: We liked our hill top pool room for the view and breeze

Dear Vicky

Thank you for your great review regarding your recent stay with us. You are quite right that all Six Senses are very different from each other and it's a cardinal sin to compare them. We are delighted that you thought our service was attentive and with a smile around each corner, music to my ears. Most of the private beached on Samui are not very big but the best part of our beach is that it's only accessible by boat and are free from hundreds of day trippers, hawkers and food stalls, making it quite a tranquil little heaven all year round. It's sad that you did not see the full potential of Samui and there is certainly more to it than a strip of bars in Chaweng. The real charm of the island lies to the South with virgin forests, coconut plantations, idyllic open beaches & seafood restaurants, artisan coffee & chocolate shops and even Samui's own rum distillery. Please feel free to contact me personally at the resort if you are thinking of returning so we could map out a different experience for you.

I enjoyed my recent 5-day stay at Six Senses Samui, but was not as "wow-ed" as I had expected to be from previous traveller reviews.

What one pays for is really for the resort facilities - a decent length pool with unblocked views, a nice gym, one's spacious villa & serene nature setting. The beds were comfy & large bathrooms come with a semi-outdoor shower. Plus points is that the resort also provides (for a small fee) daily shuttles to & from a few tourist areas around the island if one wishes to explore, or if one chooses to remain in the resort for dining, there are a couple restaurant choices and a must try "Dining on the Rocks" experience for dinner.

On the downside, however, service while still above average, was not personalized for the resort's price point, and at times inconsistent. For example - Calls to the personal butler were not always picked up nor returned, one had to thus call guest relations; Beds were turned down with a small gift only on some nights as opposed to every night; Reception asked me to come pick up my food delivery from the lobby as opposed to automatically bringing it to the room when it was delivered; Room slippers were way too big & was not automatically changed for small asian feet; Personalized handwritten welcome and checkout letters was a nice touch but addressed me as a "Mr", when I obviously am not one (understandable for the welcome letter, but not so upon checkout); Made-to-order breakfast at the breakfast buffet was sometimes served to the table, and on other days not. I gave up on my made-to-order breakfast on one of the days as it did not come after ordering twice, not realizing I had to go pick it up. It was served just the day before. Staff at the spa reception also gave some attitude, on my day of arrival, after I asked for a little more time to review the spa menu instead of immediately starting on a personal consultation for a massage upon arriving at the spa while waiting to get my room. I had not even decided on a massage yet. After that, I could not get the receptionist's attention at all & had to go to the reception table to inquire about the different spa treatments in the end. Despite this, the spa treatments were not too bad with treatment rooms having splendid views.

As an eco resort though, the taps in the villa bathrooms were always leaking even after closing them to their maximum, and the matches box after box do not light. And although the resort is a place where one goes for relaxation, one must remember to plan & book things at least 1 day in advance for any activity including shuttles and dining at the resort. Not the most ideal for anyone not wanting to be on a schedule.

But otherwise, the resort environment, weather and food still made it a reasonably enjoyable stay.

I have wanted to experience a Six Senses resort for some time now and Six Senses Samui certainly did not disappoint! What a stunning hillside retreat. Their infinity pool is "out of this world"...what beautiful views (as you can see from the pictures attached to this review). The hosts are all very attentive and go out of their way to assist, they touch base on a daily basis and if you do need anything, they are extremely proactive. The villas are situated in tropical hillside landscape and we would highly recommend the ocean front pool villa which was split over 2 floors with a gorgeous pool on the lower deck. The villa provides some fabulous little touches which are in keeping with their brand ethos and we loved the resort, the personal touches and the villa. The bathroom is fabulous and the outdoor rain shower such a novelty, the bathroom could benefit from a fan or air conditioning but they provide a hair dryer and mirror so this can be done in the bedroom where the air-conditioning is awesome! If you would like to visit other areas of Koh Samui, the hosts will organise a hotel car within 5 minutes and offer you contact details of hotel car hosts to pick you up at your convenience...this was in my opinion a great service. The spa is also set in such a pretty location...very much recommended. We really enjoyed ur stay...not a "party" location but a stunning location that offers great service and ultimate relaxation! I feel the need to comment based on previous reviews we read before booking, you can walk around the resort and it took us only 5 minutes to walk to dining on the hill (breakfast restaurant) from the far end of the resort so buggy is not needed if you enjoy a short walk and yes there are a few Mosquitos however they do protect you (smoke coils under every table in restaurants and in your villa) that this didn't bother us at all. Luxury with a clear focus on natural beauty and ethical tourism...cant wait to return to this property or another within the collection.

Room Tip: Well worth the upgrade to the ocean front pool villa

A beautiful resort made for people who have sence for aesthetics and nature.
We stayed there 5 days then left for 3days to Koh Phangan and then come back for an another 4 days. It was nice experience to come back again after short break and feel like home
The staff is very friendly and it's very practical that you have your personal assistant for time of stay.

Villas are very cozy, comfortable, made from nature materials.

Unfortunately the beach is weakest part of the resort. Very shallow sea with seaweeds, food&beverage service and surrounding is so so. That's pity because this resort really deserves something nicer.

...on the other hand there is beautiful huge pool around 40 meters long!

We will go there again!

My wife and I stayed at Six Senses over 12 months ago (first resort we had stayed at in Thailand) and now having stayed at 5 resorts in Thailand since then we really appreciate what Six Senses has to offer.

Everything about this resort is perfection.

It isn't cheap however if you can fit it into the budget then don't even think twice. Just an amazing resort. The staff are 1st class as is the food and rooms.
