“Spectacular getaway - the best in Koh Samui”
Reviewed February 17, 2014

My husband and I visited a few years ago and I almost forgot to review this hotel. It is truly in a class of its own and is an absolute standout. The hotel was very quiet at the end of August and most of the guests were European, which is a pleasant change for Australians as it made the holiday even more exotic. Our Butler Max, when out of his way to make our trip extra special and managed to reserve table 99 at their spectacular restaurant, this is not to be missed if you are planning to stay here. We didn't leave the hotel much and enjoyed daily yoga and pilates classes (all included). We had most of our lunches by the pool at it had a very relaxing vibe. We spent no time at the beach as the sand was not nearly as nice as other parts of the Island. The room service is also great for a night in.

Room Tip: I would suggest paying extra for the private plunge pool villas

We stayed at Six Senses for 12 nights, 18th-31th Jan 2014.
This was not intended to be a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, more a case of "if we have this holiday, we put the marriage off for another year, as we can't afford both". (This isn't as serious as it sounds, as we've been together, very happily unmarried, for nearly 35 years).
Anyway, on to our holiday experience. Simply put, the holiday defined every holiday we've had to date and puts future holiday plans under immense pressure to get anywhere close. We had the time of our lives and have never been so pampered or well looked after. From the General manager and Resort Manager down, all the staff took infinite care to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. The resort is beautifully laid out, with individual villas situated within tropical forest, overlooking the bay of Siam. As there are only 67 villas, all the facilities of the resort are available at all times - no having to wait for a table, sun bed, space in the gym or pool etc. Most touching was the fact that the people genuinely cared that we were happy and comfortable, without this being any kind of BS act to encourage tips. Suffice to say, it's the first time ever that we've put aside the last day of a holiday to say goodbye and thank you to all the staff involved with our stay.
As it turned out, this was a once-in-a-lifetime (so far) experience and we are already discussing how we can get back there. Marriage in 2016 might be the answer!
Michael Brown

Room Tip: Some villas have a better view of the Bay of Siam. Ask where a bouts they propose to put you.

I'll say this right up front as I'm amazed people don't mention it - this hotel is absolutely idyllic and the staff are amazing but it sits right under the flight path and planes take off and land right over the hotel from about 06.30 through to 22.00. To be honest it's an irritant that detracts from what is an absolutely beautiful hotel.

We stayed for 10 nights, most people seem to pass through for 3-4 nights, and had the most wonderful break. Out butler, Tong, was charming and has the patience of a saint. David, the General Manager, was always around and on hand to make sure everything was in order - to see a GM so visible is so refreshing these days and his attention to detail runs through every aspect of this resort.

We paid extra for the ocean view pool villa on the frontline of the resort which was definitely worth the extra money. I know some people have said the resort feels a bit worn but we thought that this worn in feel was part of the charm. The resort nestles into the landscape seamlessly and lacks the polish and chintz of other resorts but that "eco" feel adds to the relaxing atmosphere.

Don't forget to pack mosquito repellant and bite creme!!

Room Tip: Book a ocean front pool villa on the sunrise side of the resort - you can watch the sunset from the...

Dear Demading
The Six Senses Koh Samui team is always happy to hear from guests. So it gave us great pleasure to read your overall fantastic positive review and we are delighted that you found the ocean front pool villa satisfactory. You are correct in pointing out the landing & taking off of planes, this is not an unique issue for our resort alone and most resorts will experience this. There is really as such no specific flight path due to the small size of the island and planes land and take off in all directions depending on the wind. On your next visit please let me know if there is anything i can do to make your stay more comfortable. Thank you once again for the great feedback and feel free to reach me at rm-samui@sixsenses.com

We stayed for 5 nights at the end of a 2 week holiday as the final treat...having stayed at Six Senses Yao Noi a couple of years ago, we had high expectations and hoped it would live up to them!

We were not disappointed, this brand knows what works and delivers. Service is excellent, food fantastic, and the place is so well thought out and geared up for total relaxation that it's the perfect place to go to unwind.

Yes, as some other reviewers have noted, there are signs of wear around the resort and within the villas, but with it being a rustic, eco style this was not an issue for us, and I'm sure that there will be plans to upgrade and renovate at some point in the future. They could do with getting some new towels though, as they were often a bit thin and had loose threads. Linen and beds were amazing though, so comfy and lovely to wake up to a beautiful view!

Food was very good, and we went to Dining on the Rocks one night, excellent and unusual dishes, and they were happy for us to mix and match the set menus to get the dishes we wanted. Unfortunately the weather was terrible and it was too windy to sit outside, but inside was lovely, candle lit and with the sound of the wind and crashing waves it was very dramatic and added to the overall experience.

The spa was excellent of course, and the main pool area is stunning with lovely big day beds to lounge on. It's a bit more sheltered that side too, so actually some days when it was windy we preferred the main pool to our villa pool.

There were a couple of niggles with service, nothing major, but worth noting. The resort was full, so breakfast was busy (all other times it felt quiet and half empty though, the beauty of the villas is that most people spend a lot of time in them so it never feels crowded in the resort). Anyway, breakfast was busy, and we usually had to chase up coffee orders, as well as getting cutlery etc. Also, at check out - we'd had a detailed itinerary, along with a bill to pre check, the night before we left...what time our luggage would be collected, when we would be collected to go to reception to settle up, when the car would take us to the airport etc. On the day nobody came to get the luggage so we ended up going to reception ourselves, and our butler was there and looked a bit surprised to see us, so clearly something had been forgotten and we we sitting there for a bit while they sorted things out. No major dramas but meant we did cut it a bit fine at the airport!

Some people reading may be deciding where to go in Thailand, and may be comparing Samui with Yao Noi...so I thought I'd summarise what each did better (although you really would not be disappointed with either):

Food - Both excellent, but Samui has the edge with Dining on the rocks
Bar/restaurant areas - both excellent
Main pool - Samui
Spa - Yao Noi (private relaxation area after treatments, each with is own waterfall!)
Transfer (time) - Samui (15 mins from the airport)
Transfer (fun) - Yao Noi (speedboat)
Privacy/seclusion of villas - Yao Noi, more spaced out
Standard of villas - Yao Noi, newer
Service - both excellent, probably Yao Noi had the edge but we were there in low season and at Samui in high season
Things to do near the resort (if you can force yourself to leave it) - Samui
Peace and quiet - Yao Noi (Samui has frequent aeroplane noise being so close to the airport)
Check-in/check-out - Yao Noi, no reception, it's all done in your room by your butler

Overall, a wonderful luxury end to our holiday, and we are definitely going to be loyal Six Senses customers in future, can't wait to start planning the next visit!

Dear Jaykay
Thank you for the great review and it makes us proud and happy to hear that you found Six Senses to be exactly what you need on holiday. We are delighted that you visited 2 of our properties already and we hope that you will continue to explore what's on offer from Six Senses. As you mentioned wear & tear, we are constantly looking where to improve the overall experience but as you rightly pointed out the resort is incredibly Eco friendly and the "weathered" look, recycled wood, bamboo bathrooms, coconut fixtures & fittings and rustic charm is not to everyone's liking. please accept my sincerest apology for the delayed check out you experienced, this is not normal and we are looking into this so that it does not happen again. Thank you for listing the differences in Ya Noi and us, the properties are indeed very different, each with individual charm, grace & harmony. Thank you once again and we hope to welcome you back again in the not so distant future.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Six Senses Samui for 2 weeks last summer. After falling in love with Six Senses visiting Hua Hin a couple of years ago, we just had to have another go and are very glad we did! If you, like us, enjoy a bit of privacy and eco luxury, this is the resort for you.
We have been to the Maldives several times and would say the service we received at Six Senses Samui is as good as some of the "high end" islands we have visited in the Maldives. We have to thank our fantastic butler Khun Ink, witch made our stay truly special. She was very kind, professional and we still miss her smile!

We booked a Ocean View Pool Villa for two weeks and got villa number 5, witch was a great villa.
After one weeks stay, we just wanted to check the possibility of upgrading and put a request to mr. David Ashworth (GM). We were prepared to pay the difference, but during breakfast one morning our butler Khun Ink informed us that we were upgraded to a 300m2 Ocean Front Pool Villa Suite - free of charge! The staff did all the packing for us from Villa number 5 and unpacked everything in our new Suite number 10 - with a complimentary champagne wanting for us. We have to thank David for this generous upgrade witch gave us a fantastic end to our stay!

The main infinity pool is a nice place to be if you want a break from your Pool Villa. You will be served drinks and food and again - excellent service from the staff.

We also had dinner at "Dining on the rocks"; WOW! Amazing experience! The food and service was absolutely excellent! Pricy, but worth it! The head chef came to our table after our five course meal just to check that we had a nice evening - witch was a much appreciated surprise.
The buffets at "Dining on the hill" was very good. The only downside of the whole stay was when we chose the Italian set menu one night: the pasta was cold, and the pizza had big chunks of raw garlic.
We visited the spa several times during our stay, and were blissfully happy and relaxed after each and every treatment. Very sweet and professional staff, and beautiful treatment rooms.
The atmosphere in the bar was very nice and the staff was attentive. As soon as we took the last sip of our drink, they were there to ask if we would like another.

We would absolutely recommend this resort!

Room Tip: You should defiantly go for Ocean View Pool Villas. If possible - go for the Suite! An experience fo...

My husband and I stayed in a Hideaway villa for 4 nights. The villa was fantastic with breathtaking views of the ocean. The bed was very comfortable , nothing has been overlooked in the villa. You can want for nothing. We slightly regretted not having one with a pool when on the last day a very excited large group of guests with many young children descended on the pool. Prior to that it was an absolute oasis of tranquility. The most spectacular pool we have ever seen with fabulous day beds to sleep on. The pool attendants fill your glass with water regularly. The hotel manages the insect problem much better than other hotels. We were hardly bitten. The hotel provides insect repellent lotion in the room which really works, and our lovely butler Pu, provided us with a spray also. These smell much nicer than Jungle Relief and Autan! The butler is a nice touch - someone who gets to know you and is always on hand to book things for you or answer questions.
The food is good. Breakfast very nice. We preferred Dining on the hill to Dining on the Rocks. The latter we found overpriced, not very welcoming ( very unusual in Thailand) inconsistent service ( waited 40 mins for food, 20 mins for wine ) and there is such a lack of light that you can't really see what you are eating. Nothing wrong with the food, just not as good as we expected.
The staff here are the best. I injured my ankle when I was there ( take your torch you are provided with out with you as it is dark and the pathways are a bit tricky) and the staff couldn't have done more to help. The managers cocktail party is well worth going to, except the manager wasn't there that night, but then he can't be everywhere! Live jazz, taster massages and some lovely drinks.
If you want to go to Fishermans village book the hotels car as its only 400 bahts ( £8) and come back on the hotels shuttle bus which is very comfortable. Fishermans Village is well worth going to, quite charming as opposed to Chaweeng Beach, which is the reverse, but you can get your fakes etc there.
Six Senses tries very hard to be an haven of relaxation, and it is almost ( if only it could choose all of its guests as some of them can be quite challenging!)

Room Tip: Villas on the east side get sun till midday, villas on the west get it all afternoon.

Dear Idealholmes

Thank you for your fantastic feedback regarding your recent stay. We are delighted that you had a wonderful time with us and we have informed your butler Pu of your kind words.

We have noted your comments about the food ordering times at "Dining on the Rocks" and although it is quite normal to wait 30 min. for a main course in any gastronomic restaurant,
I agree that 40 min. is a little tool long and we are looking into it.

The restaurant is an open air restaurant perched on a cliff edge 10 stories high and the mood lighting is deliberate in order to fully appreciate the sunsets and maximize the spectacular views, but we are more than happy to provide extra candle light per table upon request.
We sincerely hope that you will return to us in the near future.

I love this brand about being green and environmental friendly. There is no plastic usage. It's all about natural stuff which made my experience here amazing.

I love breakfast. The fresh fruit and fresh juice made to order are fantastic.

The spa is a amazing. Everyday is a spa day when I was there.
