“Amazing resort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

Stayed at this resort last month. Nice property with good amenities. I stayed in Ocean view Pool Villa. Butler service is good. The only and major annoying factor was mosquitoes and pests. Lots of insects and mosquitoes in the evening, so you can not enjoy the private pool or ocean view in the late evening, the time you actually want to!!! The resort staff gives reason of lots of trees around, but having stayed at various jungle resorts, I won't but that reason.

Dining on Rocks is nice and you can really enjoy evening cocktails here with cool sea breeze and the view, WOW!!!

Overall, good experience.

Room Tip: Go for Ocean villas!!

We apologize for the insects and mosquito's we do our best to keep them to a minimum, but in the tropics we have to be prepared for them.
Nice to see you enjoyed our dining on the Rocks Restaurant, a truly great destination.

Spent a couple of nights at the Six Senses. The hotel is a true experience - the position is excellent looking out over the Gulf of Thailand and the giant infinity pool has an astonishingly beautiful view. The rooms are in the hillside and you have a big panoramic view as it's all glass (with blinds at night of course) - all completely exceptional. The service is also very good - they cannot do enough for you.

The food round the pool was expensive for Thailand of course but very reasonable for a hotel of this standard.

We hired a car near the airport and I'd recommend this, particularly if you're staying for a long time as the resort is very remote unless you have a car (in which case it's about 10 mins in the car until you get to somewhere livelier).

All in all a really excellent once in a lifetime kind of place. Whether I'd want to stay for more than 4 or 5 days is another thing (given the remoteness), but definitely to be experienced.

The Six Senses property is located on a rock far away from anything. If you want complete solitude and just laze around the hotel this could be good. However, the villas are worn down and the butler service is nothing more than a greeting (unless you ask for something specific). We stayed at a Villa with a private pool and the view of the bay is smashing. The service is good but lacks that extra that you would expect from a 5 star, considering what they charge you. Food is fairly expensive in the resort but of good quality (especially the Thai food). Getting around outside the resort is only possible by car... They charge a lot for a Hotel car... All in all it is a good property and a great views all around. However, it feels like you are paying through the nose when staying here. I think this Hotel must upgrade their facilities and clearly improve the service (especially the Butler Service) in order to get away with their prices. We had a good time here but I am feeling a little let down by how much we paid. Especially since I have stayed at even better maintained properties in Thailand for less.

Dear FredrikWidell,

Thank you kindly for your comments on a recent stay at Six Senses, and these I have shared with my team in detail.

Six Senses is indeed located on a peninsula, in very natural surroundings, the villas are made of wood and bamboo, "not run down" for the information of our readers, but an inteligent rustical design constructed of local materials, providing you with a rich cultural experience, perhaps the wrong choice for some guests, seeking a more modern approach to their vacation.

Food is more expensive in most resorts, mainly due to the appreciation of the Thai Baht over the last few years.

Hotel cars are slighly more expensive, as we provide a good standard of service, nice vehicles, safe and clean, local taxi's can be difficult at the best of times.

Butler service for our readers, is an extension of the concierge department, arranging all your day to day requirements, this ranges from all resort services, to external tours and transfers, indoor and outdoor meal requirments, with a wonderful can do attitude, nothing is to much.

Thank you for staying with us, and if you would like to discuss any further details with myself personally, please feel free to reach me on gm-samui@sixsenses.com

Kind Regards

We stayed at six senses for 2 weeks.
Good points:
1. The villa was clean and was visited twice daily by the staff, clean towels were provided twice daily.
2. Mosquito net in room - definitely to be used
3. Nice sunken bath.
4. Infinity pool was large and clean.
5. Butler service is good and they come to find you at breakfast each day to see if you need anything.
6. Staff are very friendly/ attentive

Bad points:
1. Mosquitos not seen, but everyone has several bites. The normal tropical mossie spray is not strong enough. Buy some from the town and make sure you spray your villa with the room spray provided every day.
2. Dining on the hill -2 options (buffet or a la carte) we had the buffet option on the 1st night, there were no prices on any of the menus and we thought it would be cheaper - not! It cost £100 for buffet for 2 and 2 drinks.
3. The food at dining on the hill was generally just ok. I ordered a burger one lunch time and it was raw in the middle ( the staff Did refund the meal) but this is not the quality we have been use to in other 5 star hotels. in general it is very pricey as are the drinks. The restaurants are usually very quiet. We didn't use the other restaurant (dining on the rocks) as the quality of food at dining on the hill put us off paying aprox £250 at dining on rocks.
4. Be prepared to share your room with spiders, scorpions, mossies, ants and other insects! (This really put me off), they get in through the cracks in the door. - put a towel at each door at night to try and stop them.
5. The villas are on a hill, so be prepared to walk up and down hills to your Villa, there are golf buggys to take you around the resort if required.
6. The villas are a little run down and in need of updating. The main theme at six senses is Eco friendly and you will probably read that on many of the GM replies. Towels are changed twice daily and our tap on the sink was constantly dripping/running! - not too Eco friendly.
7. The staff are very friendly and attentive but some do not understand English and on occasions they brought us the wrong food or drinks.
8. We used our tour operator to book trips, if you book via the hotel be prepared to pay at least 4 times more. Definitely worth a boat trip around the island, an elephant trek and a visit to the mummified monk.
9. Shuttle buses are provided by the hotel at a cost. They go at either 5.30pm or 9pm into chewang and fishermans village. The timings are too early/too late. Another bus at around 6.30/7 could be provided. I'm sure the hotel could run these free of charge given the huge cost already paid for the holiday. Most other hotels do!
10. Private taxi can be arranged through the hotel. Expect to pay aprox 100bht over what you would pay for a taxi in the town.
11. The hotel is miles away from any towns, not within walking distance - this wasn't highlighted by our travel agent so be prepared to travel by taxi to get around. It is 500bht to get into chewang or fishermans for 2 people, expect to pay more for more than 2 people.
12. The GM holds a cocktail party each week. We though he would speak to all guests even if just hello and are you having a nice holiday. We attended both cocktail parties and for the first one for full hour he sat with one couple and a female manager on the second evening sat with only one couple also - we thought they may have circulated.

It rained for 6 days out of the 14 and there was nothing to do in the hotel except visit the life building which is a slightly run down library.

In general, We would not come back to six senses at koh Samui. It has also put us off using any other six senses hotels. In our opinion the hotel is an average 4 star, definitely not a 5 star.

Do visit fishermans village on Friday evening - the culture is amazing. Crepe restaurant 55 is very good.

Chewang is dirty/smelly and crowded but reasonable for a cheap night out

Mon Cheung is ok - Charlie chaplains restaurant is good value and great tasty food

Dear Markanddeb1
Thank you for your detailed remarks on your stay with us, and appreciate your candid feedback. I have shared your comments with my staff in detail, nice to see that you have registered some good points with us and this we do appreciate. In regards to the negative points I would just like to clarify these for our readers.

Mosquito's: are very much a part of the tropics and especially Thailand, we have a detailed daily spraying program which helps us reduce the population, and if guests are well prepared, they will not be bothered much by them during the stay.

Dining on the Hill: we are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the food, as we get many wonderful comments on the selection of food on both the menus and buffets. I would like to draw your attention to our menu pricing this as not changed for over 3 years, but was as changed as the appreciation of the Thai Baht Currency by over 25%, so coming to Thailand as made dining both in and out of resorts more expensive, regular travelers to Thailand would certainly feel the pinch in this case.

Sharing your room with spiders and insects etc: I would just like to clarify that during your stay we had a number of days were we had big storms, during this time some of these little insects also run for cover as the rain floods their homes in the trees and soil, it is the tropics and you do expect some of them to take shelter under cover, note for our readers we do not have scorpions.

The villas are on a hill, so you do have to walk a little, if this was not the case the villas would not have the wonderful views they have today, and everything would be flat.

The GM does speak about the ECO side of the resort as we are intelligent luxury and not opulent luxury, so the comment villas are run down is not a true reflection of the experience offered, but what maybe a wrong choice on behalf of the client, perhaps a modern resort made from concrete and bricks with little or no insects.

Our Thai service staff do have some communication issues and not all speak perfect English, its not a first language in Thailand so we provide English classes each day at the resort to improve spoken English

Private excursions are more expensive when you book them through the hotel, this is for a good reason that we can guarantee the quality of the excursion, many guests that book direct are sometimes disappointed by the quality of the services offered, going cheaper does not always guarantee that you will have a good trip

The resort provides a daily shuttle service, for a very small fee, as do other 5 star hotels on the Island and unfortunately they are also not free, but we are considering providing this as a complimentary service in the very near future, and will also look into the service times.

The resort car is 2 pound sterling more expensive than a local taxi, because we provide a nicer car with polite service, as a seasoned traveler one knows how tricky local taxis can be, better to be safe than sorry in such cases.

Six Senses is miles away from any towns, just to clarify this point to our readers, you are 2 miles away in each direction to Chaweng and Fishermans Village, a short distance and not miles away, very convenient.

We are sorry that we did not circulate enough in the cocktail party, this point I have discussed with the team, thank you for bringing this to our attention

During your stay it was a very wet period, unfortunately this can happen from time to time and guests are always disappointed of course, I rather believe that a more opulent or modern resort maybe much more appealing to your taste, and as such make you feel like you are in a 5 star resort, we do apologize that the Inteligent Luxury approach did not appeal to you on this occasion.

Please feel free to contact me directly should you have further comments or suggestions on gm-samui@sixsenses.com

Kind Regards

The Six Senses Samui was quite simply perfect. We had the second week of our holiday at this venue having visited The Rasananda Koh Phangan and this topped off a wonderful stay on the Thai islands.

The villas feel like they've been delicately dropped into the jungle with a secluded feel; it seems like it's just you, the wildlife and Koh Samui.

The service from the staff was top class with the golf buggy transport saving a walk to the restaurant, spa or reception area.

The infinity pool is the lasting memory of this location for us, overlooking a desert island with regular water refills from the staff and shade when needed was just what we desired.

There were mainly couples at this location although 2 or 3 families had ventured into this remote location but were very respectful of those looking for a touch of romance.

We would holiday at a Six Senses resort every year if we could afford to.

Top marks to the management who were extremely helpful when called upon the one time we needed them.

MAKE SURE YOU TAKE LOTS OF MOSQUITO REPELLENT, THEY LOVE THE JUNGLE SO BE CAREFUL (the one night I wasn't - savaged)

A final word to our butler, Pu, she was superb in organising anything we wanted to do. Make sure you go on the epelphant trecking, a bragain and experience of a lifetime.

Long live the Six Senses resorts.

I won't repeat any of the other glowing reviews as they pretty much hit the nail on the head. We stayed at Six Senses for the final 3 nights of our Thai honeymoon and it was perfect.
Every member of staff was incredibly attentive, friendly could not do enough for you. The GM David came and had a drink with us during the cocktail party and had written us a little note in our villa congratulating us on our honeymoon. As we had already explored the islands and just wanted some R&R, we didn't make the most of our incredible butler, Aon.
We were upgraded to a sea view villa (No 47) and it was amazing, with the sunrise every morning! The food was fantastic with a varied menu and even an al-fresco kitchen by the beach.
We had a perfect stay at Six Senses and cannot recommend it enough and will definitely be coming back, maybe for our 1 year anniversary?

Room Tip: Treat your self to a pool villa with a sea view!
