“Best meal we had in Thailand...innovative, fresh, every dish a hit served by friendly owner”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

After missing this when closed on Sunday, we got in for a late lunch and were not disappointed after raised expectations from the rave TA reviews. Chicken green curry fried wontons were fabulous...soft shell crab roll with flying fish roe on top outstanding mix of flavors and crunch...huge fried fish served whole in green curry with mango balls....and long simmered duck legs with sweet potatoes in a chili paste sweet tamarind sauce was an unbelievable and unique combination of flavors.

The owner clearly loves what he is doing (formerly worked at the W hotel on the island but opened this a few years ago, a labor of love). My only hope is that his success allows him to expand and close off the front from the busy street. He is a rising star and I expect him to have enormous success!

“the bar is set high”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

We have had many dinners and lunches out in Koh Samui. Cafe 69 is by far the best. The food is just amazing. Each time we have been there we have left so happy. What an awesome dining experience. Vivianne cooks with love and puts a nice twist on his menu. The service, taste, presentation and value for money is just 10/10 in our book. They make everyone feel so welcome. Only wish this cafe was in Perth. The crab, salmon and mozzarella cakes are delicious.!!! Actually Everything we chose was just superb. Can't wait to come back here again. You must go at least once during your stay.

“One of the island's best”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We've been coming to Cafe 69 for a few years now and have visited twice this month. The owner and chef; Vivat or Vivian is the driivng force behind the restaurant's success and personality (it's his red car with the eyelashes parked outside!).

What is good about Cafe 69 is that, unlike many rstuarants in Koh Samui that virttually never change their menus because the tourist business is the major target audience, the menu is always varied, interesting and changing.

They are fearless in trying new, different and interesting dishes; try the deep fried chicken curry dumplings, the papaya and soft shell crab salad roll, the salmon skwers in red curry, the deep-fried betel leaves with strawberry sauce and the Australian beef in red curry...Ask Vivat for recomendations he's very honest.

One of our favourite restaurants in Koh Samui

A small cafe on a busy street. An ideal place for watching the world go by
A nice selection of thai food to choose from, excellent value for money and very tasty. The staff are very welcoming and service is quick.
Recommend booking as it does get busy.

“Thai food with a twist”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Having read wonderful reviews of this place on TA, we were eager to try its "thai food with a twist" during our recent stay in Koh Samui in June 2013. We were disappointed to discover that the place was closed when we crossed it a couple of times on the busy ring road in Bophut. (Its only a short distance to the left from the Bophut traffic lights heading towards Mae Nam.) We later discovered that the owner was away on a vacation to Switzerland. However, we were thrilled to find the place open on our penultimate evening in Koh Samui and we promptly went in for a meal.
The whole place is quirky and bright with the walls painted in electric blue and pink light thrown in for effect. It is surprisingly small with only 10 tables or so. But this goes well with the owner's philosophy of providing personalized attention. The owner/ chef Vivian is the star of the show, but the other staff is also quite helpful and efficient.
We started of by ordering their watermelon juice which was served in an attractive glass jug. We then ordered the Green curry chicken dumplings which were delicious and truly deserve all the recommendations on TA. For the mains I ordered the soft shell crab in peppercorn sauce and my wife ordered slow cooked chicken leg with hot basil sauce. Even though both the items took some time to arrive, both were very well prepared and worth the wait. Most definitely the food was different from our other meals during the trip and for this full credit goes to Vivian and his team. Vivian is a friendly host and loves to interact with the guests to ensure that they have a good meal.
The prices were expensive compared to "Thai standards" but I guess innovation does command a price premium. The place fills up quickly so it would be wise to make a booking in advance. We did see a few people get their dinner packed to eat at their hotels because they did not get a table!
