A great meal to finish off our holiday in Thailand. We were led to Cafe 69 by the positive reviews in TripAdvisor. The restaurant is located on a busy street in main Bophut. The decor is well...interesting but does suit the eclectic choice and nature of food at the restaurant. We were greeted by sequins, hot pink and blue tablecloths and wall hangings and mirrior balls. Striking and interesting! Certainly memorable! The meals were presented on blackboards and we were guided through each dish by the owener and chef - a cheerful, passionate and colourful man who was clearly at peace with his restaurant. There is also a set of more traditional dishes including green curry and pad thai on offer. We chose three appetisers and three main courses from the blackboard specials, and two regular dishes. The specials started with amazing green curry money-bags presented on a kitchen scale. The presentation and flavour were outstanding. I could have had anentire meal of these, and apparantly they are the restaurants signature dish. The second appetiser was the green papaya roll with crab. Beautifully presented with caviar topping, this dish was my favoruite dish over my two weeks in Thailand. Amazing flavours! The spring rolls were also excellent served with plump, fried prawns. The mains started with a slow-cooked duck massaman curry - outstanding flavour. I then enjoyed the slow-cooked chicken leg with basil and chilli - again outstanding. The final blackboard special was the soft-shelled crab in black pepper sauce. Fresh and flavoursome. As for the other specials all portions were large and filling. We requested 'Thai-style' 'heat' and weren't dissappointed. Amazing flavours. My teenage sons shared a pad thai and green curry. All prepared much better than anything else we had in Thailand. Also, very large portion size for hungry teenagers. The pad thai was served with 5-6 plump, fried prawns that were delicious! WE enjoyed cold beers, cocktails and milk shakes, and left the restaurant very pleased and very filled. Total cost with tip to feed five hungry Australians was 3000 bhat. A little more expensive than other traditional thai restaurants but then this was not traditional, and was much, much better value for money given the quality, flare, portion size and service than we had enjoyed at other 5-star restaurants in Thailand and overseas. I must say this was the most creative menu I have enjoyed in many years, and the enthusiasm and greetings of the owner/chef was so warming and memorable. No Koh Samui trip is complete without dinner at this extraordinary restaurant!!!
