What can I say ? Every time I try to write a review I start daydreaming, wishing I was back there. To me - to us, Mantra is a true paradise. A place we can relax and really wind down and re charge our batteries.

As a returning guest this is my second review. Spent three weeks last July/August with my partner. This year it was my 80 year old mothers turn to have a dream holiday; Almost three weeks at Mantra. She´s in good shape so I was not at all worried about the steep hills. And as it turned out, - it was never a problem during our stay.

LOCATION
OK, so Mantra IS out of the way. And that´s exactly why we love it. If we wanted “party party” we would stay in Chaweng. Spending a day or an evening in Chaweng make us appreciate Mantra even more. Having stayed at Mantra before, we knew the drill and it´s no problem to plan around the shuttle schedule. Even so, a taxi from Bophut is only BHT 300, not too bad !

ROOM
As last year, we stayed in a Cosy Suite. Love., LOVE those rooms. Big and spacious. Perfectly located close to pool/restaurant, with a great view. Watching the sun rise every morning, - the Mantra sky is never the same two days in a row. During our stay we never had problems with hot/cold water or airconditioning. Everything was working perfectly. Wifi Internet connection a bit slow at times, but hey, - you´re in Koh Samui ! The beds are good and when we asked for duvets, housekeeping was there in 5 minutes to make the beds. Our room was kept nice and clean thoughout our stay .


BUGS
We didn´t have any problems with mosqitos, just one evening after a tropical storm. Thanks to the small gecko in our room. He kept out of our way and kept the room bug free. We saw ONE single cockroach. And that was thanks to our neighbor, who didn´t follow the recommendation on the printed card to call housekeeping to get trays picked up after room service, but instead placed the tray outside the door, including scraps of food and pizza crusts. You are basically in the jungle, leaving food outside is a big no-no and an invitation to hungry bugs/animals. Honestly !

FOOD & DRINK
LOVE Mantra food ! Breakfast is fantastic. Eggs (more than three dishes), pancakes, noodle station, breads, pastries….. You don’t need to eat the same breakfast twice if you´re staying two weeks. And dinner ? Like last year, we ate our way through the menu. We found our favourites, and some courses were chosen both two and three times. We found the prices medium range, not cheap, but not too expensive either. And the quality is really good too. Cooking class with JuMp is a must ! Every Tuesday at 15.00 ! I´ve been to six of his cooking classes now and it´s informative, fun and he shows us cooking Thai food from scratch is easy ! Zoli and Tay in the bar are true artists who surprised us with their creations every night. You don´t even need to open the bar menu, ask them to surprise you – and they will.

PEOPLE
Mantra´s greatest assets is the PEOPLE working there. Never once have we experienced rude staff. There might be something lost in translation when some guests find the staff rude. If you bother greeting them with a sawadee ka(p) or at least a smile, - and if you talk TO them, not AT them, - you will find they are a warm, friendly and very welcoming group. We did witness some guests acting very rude toward the staff, - and at a couple of occations actually told the guests in question to show some manners and behave. My 80 year old mom felt very protective towards the staff and she was soon “Mom” to most of them. She loved it, - the people, the hotel – everything. We both did.

We miss Mantra and will come back for a third visit., to see our Mantra family, Manager Robert & family, Khun Koong, the reception angels, Khun Oh & Khun JuMP and their fellow Chefs, Zoli & Khun Tay at the bar, Khun Man (miss you guys !) , Mario, Khun Nuch, Khun Boy, Khun Tor, Khun On, Khun Eas, Khun Rat – yes all of the restaurant/bar staff and of course the housekeeping staff who came to say goodbye when we left. Thank you all for making our stay such a healing, relaxing and memorable one. Lots of love to our Mantra Family from Mom and Elisabeth.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights and were actually looking forward to leaving once we saw the resort.
At first upon arrival, the staff had not informed us of the facilities and their location and had given us an 'upgrade room'. This room was by no means an upgrade as originally we ordered the grand family suite consisting of 2 double bed and separate rooms; they 'upgraded' us to an amazing room which was unfortunately designed for 2 and in a small little room at the back were 2 single beds standing alone...this was unacceptable so we rang and they did give us the original room but 4 hours later-this should not be the case!
The rooms are mediocre at best. The room needs upgrading, the showers hot water was temperamental and their were constant stains not being cleaned. Further to this, we had encountered 3 massive cockroaches which the hotel cant be blamed for but our room seemed to be proned to them! Also our room bathroom had a funny smell which made the room very unacceptable.
Furthermore, the location is terrible and shuttle buses have stupid times meaning you either wait 2 hours for a return shuttle or you forget leaving the resort and pay the slightly expensive prices for food in the resort.
The reason I am awarding at least 2 stars is because the service for breakfast was very good and the manager did sort some of these issues out for us but majority were beyond his power! Also the facilities like the gym and squash courts were good. Pool is not big enough though!

For the benefit of future travelers we would like to respond to some of the points raised in this review.

We have two Super Luxurious Suits in Mantra. One belongs to the owner of the hotel. If the other Suite (we call it the Good Life Suite) is not booked we usually use it to surprise Guests with a complimentary upgrade. We never had an issue where our Guests did not appreciate this gesture especially since this Suite costs at least 2 times more as the next expensive room.

The suite is over 100 sqm large is located on the top of the property and has the most amazing views! If it is possible and our occupancy permits it we try to upgrade Guests free of charge because this is our way living by our most important value: Show LOVE!

When our colleagues learned that this family does not appreciate the upgrade they changed the rooms as soon as possible. According to our information the Guests received the room before the 2PM check in time.

Careful not to exaggerate we put a lot of effort into providing an accurate description of our location and provide an exhaustive list of our amenities on our website and all travel agent websites where we are featured.

Both the list of our facilities and the detailed room amenities can be found on our website where one can see the exact list of what that room comes equipped with. During check in our colleagues provide our Guests with the Mantra Passport a booklet containing all information about our hotel (location of facilities, opening times, etc.

All Guests are escorted to the rooms by a driver and a Front Office Angel and the room amenities are described. If someone has questions our colleagues are always happy to answer them during the process or of course any time after.

In addition all rooms come with complimentary computers and all resort information can be accessed with those computers through our website.

We provide 22 complimentary shuttles every day (pick up and drop off together) a number that is unparalleled on this island even among hotels with more remote locations. If someone would not like to use the shuttle we can provide scooter or car rental services, call a taxi or offer our driver services.
Bophut is about 10 minutes away on wheels while Chaweng is about 20 minutes.

Mantra is very committed to making sure that the environment of this island is protected. This philosophy is not just a slogan for us but we invest heavily in methods and techniques that help us making tourism sustainable.
One of the initiatives we do is that we use non-toxic and non-invasive pest control methods. Apart from protecting the environment from chemicals these methods – used by several high end luxury hotels on the island- are also child friendly. Instead of killing animals we use methods to repel them. We have ultrasound machines and use a natural substance that fights off mosquitoes, flies and other bugs.

Because we are on a tropical island, any pest control method (whether toxic or not) is useless if Guests leave food around (whether inside or outside the door).

We believe that the presence of a healthy flora and fauna is a sign that our efforts for protecting the natural beauty of this island are successful.

If Guests have finished their meal all they need to do is call reception to have the dishes collected. This way our Guest can contribute to our efforts and help other Guests to have a good time as well.

After staying in another 5* hotel prior to my stay here, I was expecting a lush haven. My expectations were not met, when we received an 'upgrade' to a slightly bigger wow room instead of the grand room as there were four of us. This meant we had one bathroom between the four of us. Nevertheless we rang them and requested our original
Booking which they happily gave us after an hour wait.
Unfortunately the room they gave us wasn't cleaned properly and I witnessed the biggest cockroach of my life in that room. Understandably insects do come and go, but this wasn't the last cockroach I was going to see in our room.
Our bathroom had a constant smell and the shower didn't provide us with hot water. They claim to also have a 'soap menu' however nothing was given and neither was the 'mantra passport'.
So we rang them up to let them
Know of our issues but we couldn't even do this because the phone and Internet was down and this was throughout our stay.
Because of the issues on our first day, I was just ready To go home and every little thing would annoy me because it just didn't feel homely at all.
On one day the manager came and spoke to us and we told him the issue about our shower and within the next 20 minutes someone came and sorted it. I think the life of this place is the manager who really does make an effort with everyone and does help solve your problems. So eventually this place did grow on me because the food is AMAZING and really, the rooms aren't that bad! come her just for the food if you want! And the pool has such amazing views.

Great hideaway! I had a fantastic 4d 3n stay. Love the quietness at night. The hotel has a lot of activities to do such as yoga class, mini theatre, spa, infinity pool, fully-equipped gym, shuttle bus service etc. I especially love the gym. The staff were superb friendly, everything was very clean and good comfy bed. And ... this hotel is Pet Friendly but they're really strict on leaving the dog alone in the room :))))

Room Tip: Pick glamorous LOVE SUITE...not that big room but amazing view and a balcony with a jacuzzi on it.

we were in Koh Samui in August and we decided to try two hotel, the Mantra and the bandarra Resort...both turned out to be great. The mantra is in an unusual location. Not close to anything really..the beach the main road etc. However once you get into the groove of the place, it's awesome, the staff are very friendly...particularly the restaurant staff, the facilitlies are great and the view is aeseome. Fabulous gym, the rooms are very cool, and it's not over the top, price wise..
To get around we rented a scooter...not everyone's cup of tea, but we had a blast, explored the island great, caught in a downpour not so great...overall we loved it

Room Tip: get out of the hotel and go into Bophut village on friday night for 'walk street'...bustling...

We arrived here for the 7 day 'chillout' part of our family holiday, after spending 3 busy days in Bangkok and a further 4
tour-laden ones in Chang Mai.

The hotel is perched on a steep hillside, away from the procession of hotels and bars down at Bophut. Whilst this might not suit some, we loved it. The setting makes for spectacular views from the infinity pool, your room balcony or even the running machines in the gym!

There is a reliance on the shuttle service to get to other parts of the island but just the minimum amount of planning should see you able to organise your time and outings to make use of the service (we say this as terrible pre-planners ourselves!). We spent many evenings heading down to Bophut or Chaeweng for a sundowner followed by dinner on the beach as the moon rose before getting a shuttle back. Idyllic.

Having 3 boys under 10, we had two inter-connecting Wow Rooms which was perfect. It also meant we made extensive use of the lovely pool, often being there for the kids to enjoy a can of Coke and a bowl of free, happy hour popcorn before getting ready for the evening. They could also retreat to the room if the sun became too much to enjoy one of the many free movies on the in room entertainment system.

The breakfast is varied and filling plus the room service, restaurant and themed food night menus (traditional Thai buffet and BBQ nights) are very good (although I would say the themed night menu prices are a little steep).

Staff are warm, friendly and genuinely come across as wanting you to have a good time. They take time to ask how you are enjoying your stay and offer help should you want to arrange trips or get ideas for things to do. Also very good with the kids.

Overall, we were impressed with the inclusive feel engendered by the hotel. Having children in such a nice hotel, you are always slightly self-aware of their impact on other guests, especially when many of them seem to be couples and honeymooners. But sitting around the pool was very relaxed and friendly.

If you want readily available beach access with lots of choice on bars and restaurants, then this might not be for you. But it was exactly the well appointed and serviced escape we wished for to complete a memorable 2 weeks in Thailand.

The Mantra is a lovely place to stay - beautiful views, spacious and clean rooms, friendly and helpful staff and yummy breakfasts. What more could you want?!

We stayed for 9 nights in a 'Love Jacuzzi Deluxe' room which certainly lived up to its name, boasting a balcony jacuzzi, comfortable large bed and a rainfall shower. The room also provided internet access and free international phonecalls, which was a lovely touch!

The only downside to the hotel is its location in that it is high on a hill so is not easily accessible on foot. The hotel provides frequent free shuttle services into local areas (Chaweng and Bophut) and you can also rent mopeds and cars from reception, but if you are used to coming and going on foot, this may not be ideal for you.

For us though, the wonderful view and friendly, welcoming atmosphere more than made up for the lack of accessibility. It was the perfect setting for a relaxing, romantic break and we would definitely stay again!
