“What a Meal”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

if you need to go for a special meal then this is definately the place to go, the restaurant is in the Anantara hotel, book before you go as it does get busy, its not cheap compared to other restaurants in the area but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and that is Excellent food, Superb service and a lovely astmosphere/setting worth the extra money for a treat for a special person.

“Average - which for a place and prices like this - is actually worse...”
Reviewed August 9, 2014

'fraid this was not a good experience (dinner) - or at least not what you'd expect when deciding to splash out a little, in a supposedly top-notch place. Yes, the Wagyu beef was good - but then that's what Wagyu beef does. Even there, though, my main gripe about the place comes through: it's a chain (even if the chain is called Anantara), with a lot of show (and indeed the environment / atmosphere is stunning: just walking/driving through from the road to the main entrance and then beyond to the restaurant is a gorgeous experience), but not really focused laser-like on the quality of the actual food experience (which restaurants of this prince level should really be).

So, the beef: the advertised meat being flambeed in cognac at the table side, turns out instead to mean a brief, spectacular flash in the pan for the cognac, some pre-concocted sauce stirred in, and some of that mix (quite extinguished) being poured over the beef; my repeatedly expressed preference for medium-to-well-done rested in something a shade below medium; when asking for some of the remaining sauce (left in the pan) once the meat had been given some more cooking time, I received a little saucer with, clearly, only the pre-mix in it, minus truffle pieces or cognac, cold! The potato mash was far too large and utterly boring - nowhere near what some other places manage. And the spring roll served on top was again nothing out of the ordinary. For 2000 baht for that single dish one expects something special, not something averagely cooked and served. The preceding soup ("eggplant velvet") sounded great and served with 5-star ceremony, but was about as bland as its gets.

Among other other small annoyances you would have thought they would get right in such splendid surroundings: they make great play of replacing your cutlery after you've picked your menu. But when the amuse-bouche tuned up I was reduced to using the mains fork and knife - nothing was supplied (and it wash't the sort of thing one could eat with one's hands)...

So while I might have forgiven the blemishes and imperfections in another place, knowing I had tried for three consecutive visits to Samui to book this place and was prepared to pay double or more for the experience, here the sum of the experience was really disappointing.

One does not get the sense of the place being run with the sort of focus and gastronomic professionalism I have found in several smaller, unpretentious places - like for instance Ocean 11 or, of course, Barracuda. I can quite imagine (judging by all the starry reviews here) that people get seduced by the wow factor of the environment and the ceremony - and I'm glad they have a good time as a result. But if it's top-notch food you're after, this is not your obvious choice. If you are really going to splash out, the fine-dining 'Bistro' in Hansar Samui next door (upstairs) is better by an order of magnitude (try the chef's degustation menu there!).

“Solid”
Reviewed July 29, 2014

We had lunch here and thought the food was ok the service was ok, and the ambience ok. Sorry, just can't be more effusive. We'd hoped for more based on the other TA reviews. I do have to say that we walked by one night later in the beach when they were fully set up on the beach and it looked great. Maybe better at night time?
