We booked the zen villa for three nights but ended up only staying for one....my wife didn't enjoy the geckos and ants very much :) the Villa was beautiful and clean and the staff was very helpful. They provide you with breakfast foods to cook in the morning and free use of the amazing plunge pools, steam baths and scrubs with pleanty of really tasty virgin mojitos. The Villas are close to a road so you still get some street noise but it's not that much. The sounds of the jungle are louder. There was even a large Gecko in our closet that my wife didn't seem to like :) so the staff quickly got rid of it. The cafe has really good food but it is not a full meal so if you are going to stay in a villa bring food or plan on going to town for dinner.
The only thing I would have liked to see (maybe I missed it) would have been a broom so I could have sweept the kitchen and bathroom from ants. The kitchen could use a little extra attention on the cleaning to keep the ants out too.
Expect to see plenty of centipedes, ants, mosquitos and geckos.

Dear villa guest,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to leave a review here on Tripadvisor, and appreciate the kind words you found about our staff, the beauty of the Zen Garden villa and the food & drinks.

We sincerely regret that your wife felt uncomfortable being that close to Samui’s natural environment and understand that for some the encounter with frogs, birds, insects, squirrels & lizards may require a small period of getting used to; however, many of our villa guests find this an appealing feature of their stay, and like us, believe in the healing powers of plants, rocks & water. The majority of occasional visitors from the animal kingdom are entirely harmless – but we do understand that some villa guests may not feel at ease in their company. We therefore point out on our villa online booking page that our villas may not suit everyone.

The entire Tamarind Springs concept is built around a back to nature experience, in a beautiful tropical environment unlike anywhere else. We have carefully designed our property, facilities and villas with as little impact on Samui’s rich natural environment as possible, while still allowing visitors access to this special place. Our long-time dedication to travelling the green path was acknowledged earlier this year when we received a 5-leaf eco-accreditation by the Green Leaf foundation - the only spa in Thailand to be awarded this highest possible ranking.

Regarding the broom you were looking for, all our villas are equipped with cleaning equipment, including a small broom, usually under the kitchen sink or in the cupboard.

Again, we are sorry that being this close to nature diminished the enjoyment of your villa stay, and we sincerely wish that everything else about your stay on our island was enjoyable and rewarding. Maybe we can welcome you again sometime at our forest spa.

We booked into the Saba Dalwa? but they transfered us to the Zen Villas they said they were busy upgrading the other one. We intended to stay 7 nights although we ended up checking out after 3 nights for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, I have to say, the Villa is very clean, well maintained and is visually incredible. It is a very lovely place to stay and had I had a tour before booking, I would have been very happy I think.
However, for the $160AU per night we paid, I kind of expected something else.

Things you should know:
I expected to be located in the centre of a tranquil bushland, away from the noise etc. You should know that it is located about 150 metres from the Koh Samui ring road, which is a constant (I mean constant) buzz of motorbikes, cars and trucks. Whilst it is not loud as such, the noise of the road is a constant presence and I am not a big fan of road noise, especially when the place is supposed to be tranquil.

Security wise, you should know that there are no locks on the doors of these villas. I personally am ok with this in theory. They say that everything is very secure. However when you check in you actually have to sign a waiver which says that if anything is stolen from your room, it is not their responsibiilty. It is all well and good having no locks on the doors and saying how secure the place is, but when you have to sign this paper, it kind of wrecks your confidence a little. When you have laptops etc you kind of want some assurance and personally I didn't feel confident.

Privacy: It seems from the website that the place is absolutely private. The thing you should know is that the villas are not all spaced out. It seemed to me that they were all within 20 metres of eachother. With such large open windows on the villas, you expect a little more. You should know that the staff, whilst lovely, can appear at any moment outside your window or in your kitchen

I think overall, the service is lovely, the rock plunge pools and steam caves etc are exceptional...The spa is located further away from the road and is a fair bit more tranquil....

I guess in the end, I expected privacy, tranquilty, security to the max and to me these things weren't what I expected.

Would I stay again? Yes, now that I know what it is, but I would not take laptop etc and I probably wouldn't want to pay so much for it...

Dear villa guest,

We are very grateful for your review and regret not meeting your expectations. It goes without saying that customer satisfaction is always top of our agenda and we take the points you raise very seriously; we also appreciate the balanced tone of your words and the many positive comments you found time to mention as well. Your final comment that you would stay again means a lot to us.

The unique nature of our villas appeals to a certain type of independent traveller, and we accept that there are aspects that may not suit everyone’s tastes. However, your comments are very valuable because they allow us to check our understanding of customer expectations against what visitors really expect and require.

Regarding the general safety, Tamarind Springs is very safe. In 20 years of villa operation we have never had any significant security problems. Almost all our staff live on site and will stop any non-resident from entering the premises. Each villa contains a safe to store valuables or money. Security guards patrol the grounds at night. The experience we try to offer for villa residents and the open-plan traditional architecture of our buildings would be at odds with more doors, locks and other additional security. However, the point you raise is that we need to communicate this much better to our customers, before and on arrival. We regret that we failed to make you feel at ease.

Regarding privacy and tranquillity: I’m surprised that you found the Zen Garden villa not sufficiently secluded from the other villas, as it’s quite a distance from the next villa, and almost fully enclosed by trees, hedges and other natural features. It is true that our staff can quietly appear to tidy the villa, re-stock the fridge or make the beds, but they usually visit when guests have gone out to avoid any disturbance. We truly regret that you were disturbed by the buzz from the main Lamai road that can be heard from the distance – this is only an issue during the short peak seasons and is also somewhat influenced by wind direction. These issues again are a matter of communicating better to our customers, and we will endeavour to do so.

But as you also noted, there is a difference between absolute privacy & tranquillity (which you seem to have expected), and the natural serenity that Tamarind Springs is known for – the latter requires a small amount of tolerance for some minor surprises...surprises that many customers consider an appealing feature of their stay.

We would have much liked you to stay, but of course respect your decision to leave. Thank you for helping us understand things better from the customer perspective. Don’t hesitate to contact me direct on the company email address if you have any further comments or questions. We really hope you had a great visit to Koh Samui, and sincerely wish to welcome you again sometime.

My sister and I stayed there for 4 days . We stayed in the Banyan Suite which is really wonderful. Two floors uniquely designed where you can feel like directly connected to nature. The rooms were clean and airy and with a tropical luxory. I simply loved it.
The stuff is nice and friendly and very helpful when you have questions. Breakfast is delicious, not to forget the coffee. The spa facilities are wonderful and absolutely recommendable. You can hang out in the steam caves for an afternoon without extra charge. The whole experience was like a dream.

I usually only bother to write a review when I am super impressed and Tamarind Springs more than deserves it! We stayed for 5 nights in the Zen Garden Villa. The luxury lays in the lushness, uniqueness, tranquility and finest Thai hospitality. I am big on ambiance and design. The grounds, the villas, the cafe, and any other building on the property are simple amazing and a feast for the senses. The quiet and rich Asian style paired with the lush tropical setting is right out of a magazine. The landscape on the gently sloped terrain is very manicured yet jungle-like. Large granite boulders are left in place and the houses are build right around them. We had at least one meal in the cafe every day. The dishes were delicious and super fresh from homemade recipes. The smoothies are addictive (the Energy Booster was my favorite). We didn't get massages here but heard they are uniquely therapeutic. We twice indulged in the herbal steam and plunge pool treat though. It comes with these homemade body scrubs made from tamarind and ginger. My skin felt awesome afterward. The Zen Garden Villa had a private garden with koi fish pond. The villas don't have locks on the doors and most of them don't have A/Cs (ours did though) but that's exactly what makes it so rich in experience. The kitchen, bathroom, and porch are not enclosed which added to the whole nature flair. The friendly staff came twice a day to turn the lights on, replenish the fridge and the mosquito repellent coils and even provided toxic-free mosquito spray. Taking a shower under the stars or watching the palm trees sway in the wind while you lather your hair was one of the best parts. :-) In the evenings we regularly listened to a frog and cicada concerto. It's nature and peacefulness pure. We met one of the owners and learned more about all the thoughtful quality that goes into every detail. It was a wonderful experience and I miss its serenity already. Thank you Tamarind Springs (bow) :-)

This place is a marvellous find for anyone looking to get away from the rough and tumble of city life, searching for some peace and quiet and a way to reconnect with nature. Tamarind Springs has secluded villas, open to nature but assuring complete privacy, set in a sprawling area.

We stayed at the Tamarind Suite and absolutely loved it. The design and the furniture blended in with the sorroundings. Very tasteful and absolutely nothing garish. We even had an open kitchen with a well stocked refrigerator (fresh fruits, eggs, breads, homemade jams).

The staff are caring, unfailingly polite and unobtrusive.

Ofcourse, no review of Tamarind Springs can be complete without a word about their Spa. Lots of people have said it before and I am going to say it again: You absolutely have to experience it. the plunge pools, steam caves and the divine massages trasport you to another world.

The drawbacks: The villas can be a bit 'too open to nature'. Read: geckos and such other crawlies may be guests at your villa. Also, the road leading upto Tamarind Springs can be dark and deserted and nights and a bunch of not-so-friendly dogs inhabit the road.

The Tamarind will always be in my thoughts... the time there was more than special. We rented one of the houses. The grounds are stunning and feel private and yet sheltered - the cafe below is private and wonderful and is a beginning of a spa experience which until has so far for me never been surpassed. The staff is graceful and absolutely attentive to every detail - you will feel the difference.

Simply wonderful.

P.S.: One piece of advice - unfortunalty - the second time we stayed there - there was a disco nearby which had opened, which played rather loud music - but in the end it did not disturb us anymore - take some ear plugs with you - just in case. Or ask for a hut a bit away from this area.
