“Fantastic Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2009

We just returned from a two week trip to Puglia and stayed in Masseria Gattamora for 2 nights. I don't know how we found out about it before we went, but am I glad we did! It was our favourite place and I highly recommend a stay if you want to get away from it all and relax by the pool and eat excellent food. The grounds were stunning with areas to sit and relax under orange/fruit trees but only a short drive from Otranto and its beaches.

It is mainly a restaurant with very well appointed rooms which include air conditioning and some have a terrace. The food was amazing and maybe the best we have eaten in Italy. It is Puglian food with a contemporary twist which, after weeks of eating the same old thing everywhere we went, this was a breathe of fresh air.

We started with a stunning mixed antipasto of vegetables fish and cheese, followed by pasta with a lamb ragu and pecorino cream - I will remember this dish for a very long time. The mains were huge pieces of succulent meat or fish with sides. They had an extensive wine list and the staff were very friendly (as we found all the Pugliese to be).

A stay at the Masseria is €90 per night per room plus €28 per head for dinner - great value and a place that will stay with you long after you leave.

This is really more of a restaurant with 11 rooms. So breakfast is simple, featuring that Italian perennial of cake, plus cheeses, meats, breads and fresh fruit. You can boil your own egg or squeeze your own orange juice. For us hte olny real disappointment was the limit to the tea and coffee on offer. But the real feature of this Masseria is the restaurant. This was packed every night, with large groups coming from the area for various celebrations - seems to be a good recommendation. We ate outside, and there were never free tables; on one occasion because of the wind dinner was served in the lovely restaurant which appears to be a converted barn ir similar, with high, vaulted ceilings and a huge open old stone fireplace as well as (unused) troughs for feed. Plus, after some careful negotiation (we don't speak much Italian and the staff don't speak much English) the chef created a great vegetarain menu for us. The first night, before we managed this, we had a simple local pasta dish followed by grilled veg and a huge plate of local cheeses. For fish eaters, the choice seemed to be especially fresh and varied. It also has a good selection of very reasonably priced local wines (we found some of it sold retail for more!) Our room was a sufficient size, done in a traditional style, with air conditioning and a good sized well equipped bathroom. The property also benefits form a very good sized swimming pool (where you can swim, not just cool off.) We did not explore the immediate village, but it is only a short drive to hte coast - Port Badisco is a very pretty cove, and Otranto is a lovely old town, with a good range of restauarants and nice beach.
