“Potentially romantic hideaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2012

I spotted this hotel while exploring Burgundy with my husband some 25 years ago, and enchanted by its appearance and setting -(just as described by your other reviewers)- determined to stay there one day.We managed this for one night in July.
I think our disappointment was mainly down to the weather being cold, grey and wet, rendering the lovely terrace redundant. To compensate, a fire had been lit in the rustic dining room (in the old mill) with candles on the tables. You can order a table d'hote dinner when you book your room- four courses, simple but good, but no choice. You are told in advance what is on the menu that day. ,
Because this is indeed quite a simple hostelry, there was nowhere alternative to sit once we had finished our meal- bit sad in wet weather. Our room, however, had been recently and prettily decorated, but it was very small and did not even have a television We did not think the breakfast, at 9 euros, compared particularly well with other places we have stayed.

My wife and I returned to France for our 30th anniversary. We stayed at Moulin des Templiers on our honeymoon and a nostalgic trip back was a must.

This is a simple inn on an amazing site, right on the Cousin River on a quiet road near Avallon and Vezelay. The river was full this June because of all the rain that northern France has had and the sound of rushing water enveloped the entire property. We stayed three nights, and made a point of sitting on the terrace and watching the river flow for at least part of every day.

There is no question that the rooms need to be upgraded. This is not a luxury property. The family that owns the place now are doing their best in the face of what must be immense challenges to keep an old building functional without any deep pockets behind them.

In terms of the food, the breakfasts are excellent with fine bread, coffee, orange juice, and a few extras like fruit, yogurt, and cheese. We had dinner at the inn one night. Eating outside surrounded by trees and sounds of rushing water made for an amazing setting. The food itself was solid, but nothing spectacular. Their wine list is short, but offers great value from local wineries (excellent Chablis for 27 euros, for example).

As another poster put it, this is a charming romantic mill in the beautiful Burgundy countryside. It's perfect for a two or three night stop to shed the stresses of life.

Nested alongside the Cousin river in the Avallon region (Department of Yonne, in Burgundy), 200 km from Paris and 100 km from Beaune, this charming water mill is a romantic hideaway.

Family managed, the young couple running it is smiling and helpful, and the food is suprisingly far above expectations.

This very simple 2 star hotel is fitted with comfortable bedding, is clean and well-kept, but needs some serious refurbishing to make it meet international standards. It however spills over with charm and the general peaceful romantic atmosphere makes you forget the creaky doors and yellowing wall paper. Prices are reasonable. A lovely place for a romantic week-end.

Last but not least, they accept dogs. Even large ones (we have a great dane!)

Room Tip: Try to get the small appartment.

A beautiful property, right on the river cousins which you can hear rushing by from your room. The location was absolutely perfect and the hosts lovely. A cute dog as well :). Breakfast was good. The rooms aren't big and the shower is a small bath thing, but if you aren't staying for longer than 2 days this isn't a problem. Id recommend it to everyone

Lovely place on a charming river, close to Avallon. The young couple who took over the management of the hotel 1 year ago is doing its best for the guests. Warm welcome, nice tips on the region ... Yes the rooms are small and old fashioned, but for 64 EUR, they are more than OK and the lovely building from the 12th century more than compensate for the lack of a proper bathroom ! Good "table d'hote" (set menu) in the evening. We went to Moulin des Ruats (500 m further the "Cousin" Vallee) 3 years ago and were not satisfied (snobish place and expensive!). Now, we found our place for a simple and lovely stay !

Was an amazing experience to wake up to the soothing sound of the river, walk down to an absolutely genuine atmosphere of local cuisine and hospitality. A hotel staff truely passionated about food, traditions and wine. It felt like having been transported to when the knights templar sat and dined in the very same spot.

The region around the hotel kept us busy with wine tasting, hiking, rafting, castle visiting, church gazing, roman ruins exploring, fishing, and a seemingly never ending list of other activities. In a world made to make you forget about all the stresses of a chaotic urban life. Thank you to the Jouffray family and we hope to see you again soon.

The room was extremely small and had two tiny single beds pushed together. The room was very shabby and was in urgent need of cleaning and painting. The bathroom was substandard with no stand for the shower. This was not the standard of the poorest 2* hotel. The bed had contained creatures that me bit quite hard and I still have the marks. The breakfast was fresh but overpriced at 9 euros for what it contained. The fixed menu dinner was quite good. The only plus about this hotel is its location which is very pretty indeed, but not pretty enough to make us stay for the second night that we had booked. I appreciate that this is a old mill house but the internal accommodation needs urgent updating. It could not be classified as quaint just unsatisfactory.

Room Tip: Don't stay there unles you like a backpacker's hostel
