Description: Kay's Gringo Postres roughly translated means Kay's NorthAmerican Sweets. Kay and her husband, Tom, from South Dakota, started out as a tiny pastry and coffee shop and grew into the only place in Atenas and for miles around that serves real American soul food - heavenly cheeseburgers and crispy fries, several types of grilled cheese sandwiches, BLT's, amazing breakfasts as well as an all you can eat Sunday Brunch buffet. The cakes, cookies and pie are homemade and defy description. It's a gathering place for locals as well as expatriates, They also maintain a lending library with English, German, French and Spanish books.

We keep going back because of the friendly atmosphere, as well as the food. Kay is there all the time and is delightful to talk to. We have met some really interesting people there and the food is fresh and delicious.
They also have free WIFI, plenty of books that you can take back to your residence and read for free as long as you return them.
All in all, if your feeling lonely for the states, a little English conversation, atmosphere and delicious American food, this is your place.

I am a regular at Kay's and just have to say I have ALWAYS been happy with everything I've ever ordered there.
Most of the time the food is prepared to your specific desires. If you want your eggs, bacon, hamburger, etc. cooked a certain way Kays staff takes the time for you to "HAVE IT YOUR WAY!!"
A couple of the recent reviews I've seen puzzled me until I looked at the other reviews those same people had done for other places. I'm no longer puzzled. They didn't seem to like much of anything they found here.
No. Kay's is not the place for perfectionists who expect gourmet food and a luxurious atmosphere in Costa Rica. But if you want great home cooking, friendly staff and a happy atmosphere this is the place to go. Her furniture isn't fancy but actually is more comfortable than the flat bottomed wooden chairs found in most Costa Rica restaurants.
Her coffee has always been great and is a mainstay for many local gringos. They LOVE Kays coffee. I've never experienced greasy eggs or any of the other things mentioned and I'm there on a regular basis.
Her homemade biscuits and gravy are top notch and her bacon will make your tongue beat your brains out!!
The pancakes are a pre-mix just as they are in 99% of the other restaurants in Costa Rica. Nowhere on her menu did I see "fresh squeezed orange juice" but the juice she serves is always cold and delicious.
(Methinks some people are just a little too persnickety to even be IN Costa Rica.)
Kay's is THE place for ex-pats and tourists in Atenas. She has a book swap that serves the gringo community. Books written in English are hard to find here but you can find most anything you want at Kay's.
Once you meet Kay you will feel like you're "back home" ....IF, that is, your home is a comfortable, inviting, loving place with none of the frills that make you afraid to sit down on the furniture. Kay's is welcoming and inviting. She never meets a stranger.
Come to Kay's and see for yourself!!!

This is the place to get real American style dishes! The Sunday breakfast buffet is amazing, with sausage, bacon, fluffy scrambled eggs, gallo pinto (local beans, rice dish) picadillo (local potato dish), cinnamon rolls. and the best homemade biscuits and sausage gravy ever! Something new is the French toast casserole, fabulous!

Regular breakfast fare is omelettes and eggs, as you like, pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage and more. Try their famous breakfast BLT or breakfast burritto. All great.

Available at lunch are several variations of burger, made with Brangus beef, gourmet grilled cheese, salads and specials.

Kay is the unofficial Mayor of Atenas, as her place is a cultural and culinary crossroads. Locals as well as expats gather for food, fun, information and BOOKS! Stopping by there is like visiting a little hunk of home and is not to be missed. No one leaves hungry or unhappy.
