“Relaxing atmosphere and attentive hosts in beautiful Costa Rica”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

We stayed at this gem of a B&B for a week while vacationing in Costa Rica with our daughter who lives in Atenas. While we used it as a home base for day trips to the many beautiful natural attractions in central Costa Rica, we should have made more time to relax and enjoy the peace and ambience of the Orchid Tree's open air dining and lounge area, as well as the cool blue-tiled pool and patio. Pat and Brad are wonderful people and supplied a wealth of information about sights to see in Costa Rica, as well as its people, culture, and food. We especially appreciated Pat's philosophy that if we are guests at a Bed & Breakfast, then Breakfast is a pretty important element! We woke up every morning anticipating the world's best coffee and a king-sized, healthy, delicious breakfast. If we vacation in Costa Rica in the future, we will not hesitate to stay with Pat and Brad again!

Brad and Pat are exemplary hosts and make you feel extremely welcome from the start. My girlfriend and I were so glad that we stumbled upon this place randomly when planning our trip and it ended up being our favourite B&B we stayed at during the trip. We were immediately made to feel comfortable and at home and they were very helpful in suggesting places to go and things to do in and around Atenas. The room was nice and clean, the outdoor living room/kitchen area was a lovely place to start our days with an excellent breakfast and some hummingbirds for company, and relax in the evening.

We were looking for somewhere to stay for our last couple of nights before flying home and were drawn to Atenas because it was rumoured to have the best climate in the world. The Orchid Tree is a great place to enjoy that climate, whether that's watching hummingbirds from the breezy lounge/dining area or relaxing in a swinging chair by the pool. The beds were very comfortable and Brad and Pat were really helpful hosts. We weren't travelling with a car, which we thought might be a problem. It wasn't - even though the location is peaceful and green, it's also just off the bus route from San Jose/Alajuela.

Brad and Pat have a beautiful place and they are terrific hosts. Their story is one that more people should consider, re-evaluate your priorities and live a more rewarding life. We could not have had a more enjoyable entry into the country as these folks gave us. No need to look any farther if you are wanting a place just a bit west of San Jose. We needed a place to stay upon arriving and didn't want to stay in the city before we headed to the coast. This fit the bill perfectly.

We are having a great stay here by the pool on our last day in Costa Rica. It's just 20min from the airport. I highly recommend it as an entry stay as well as an exit like we are using it. Brad and Patricia have some great advice for those entering the country and for us they provide a beautiful place to stay making it harder to leave. (Rooms would have got 5 stars if there was AC but it wasn't at all necessary with the fan on and we're in dry season)

We stayed at the Orchid Tree for 4 nights and did several excursions around the valley. It is about a 5 minute drive to Atenas, where you can find a good selection of restaurants. Pat and Brad are wonderful hosts, who try to make your stay as comfortable as it can be, while being unobtrusive. The breakfasts, which are plentiful and a nice variety – eggs, fruit, muesli and of course wonderful organic Costa Rican coffee - will get you ready for a day out exploring. We thoroughly enjoyed the open kitchen/eating/lounge area. It was a very familial atmosphere and we met some other lovely travellers. The rooms and beathrooms are a nice size and everything is spotless. The pool is also a nice addition and gives you the option to just stay in for a day and relax. It comes with deckchairs in the sun, as well as garden furniture under a covered patio area if you prefer shade.

I gave this B&B five stars because there wasn't anywhere on this site I could give it six! Previous reviewers have said everything I could have written here so rather than repeat them there are things I can add such as in bed and breakfasts where we have stayed before we have felt obligated to vacate the premises after breakfast - not so at the Orchid Tree, in fact we found the reverse. We were encouraged to spend the day on the sun deck, "floating" in the swinging chairs, lazing in the hammock or enjoying the beautiful pool or just putting our feet up in the lovely living area and enjoying the humming birds flitting through the room from one feeder to the other. We would find local fresh fruits cut up in a bowl beside us after our "siesta" or a bowl of chips or nuts with a refreshing cold drink. Nothing was too much trouble for Pat and Brad to make us feel at home and part of their family. On one occasion I had eaten something in a local restaurant which did not agree with me and couldn't leave our room. Brad took my husband that morning to the local market while Pat voluntarily ministered to my needs. She picked fresh lemon grass and mint and made a wonderful tea which she brought to the room along with dry crackers. A little while later she appeared with ginger ale and later more lemon grass tea and by noon I was back on my feet. One evening we were eating in a local restaurant and a man at the next table started up a conversation with us and asked where we were staying so I said at an incredible bed and breakfast and before I could say anything else he said "Oh, you must be at the Orchid Tree, in my opinion the best bed and breakfast in Costa Rica". We agree with him whole heartedly. Thank you Pat & Brad for ten wonderful days, we won't forget you, your wonderful hospitality or your incredibly beautiful home which you share so lovingly with your guests.
