4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

We came back a few days ago from this lovely hotel. We had a great time! A couple with one child and we stay in a family room for a week. The variety and the quality of food was impressive. The staff was very polite and helpful. Many things to do inside the hotel. Many swimming pools especially for the kids many activities all day long. Every night a different show. The room was big enough and very clean Everything was perfect. A minor for me was the daylight early in the morning which passed from the curtins and the feeling that you were not in Greece because of the many Russians everywhere.

Room Tip: not to be close to a restaurant

We came as a family of 4 with two children ages 9 and 7 for a week in July 2013. We stayed in a family suite ground floor room with pool view.
Good points:
Friendly staff who worked very hard and were generally multi-lingual.
Spacious suite rooms, decent beds/mattresses for the children. The rooms were clean and well equipped (washing machine dishwasher, iron etc...not that I come on a 5 star holiday looking to self-cater) if a bit dated (think 1990s bathrooms) in need of a bit of modernisation.
The Italian restaurant was excellent. Lovely calm atmosphere and good food.
The Greek Restaurant was in an equally nice position just back from the shoreline. Food here was ok.
The aqua park pool area was great for the children.

Negative points:
We didn't get much information from the hotel staff on arrival about activities, trips, etc; just meal times and then we were dispatched to our room. No info on booking the outdoor BBQ just up from the beach.
We were led to believe there would be plenty of kids activities, but these were all in German.
There were only 1 or 2 other English families staying. My suggestion to the hotel management would be to make clear to tour operators that the kids activities are really not suited to English speaking children. If you are British and are looking for a family hotel try somewhere else.
The clientele was 60% Russian, 35% German and 5% other (British, French).
The main buffet was ok food wise, but was not a relaxing environment to eat in. We had gone to the Sensatori in Tenerife the year before and this buffet did not come close in choice, quality or dining experience. Most food was geared towards the predominant Russian/ German guests.
The Russians generally were up at the crack of dawn putting towels on sunbeds.

The hotel generally had a very cramped feel to it, and I felt that we were living on top of other guests around the cramped pool areas and in the eating areas. There was no quiet relaxing area outdoors with comfy sofas to chill after a meal. This didn't all in all feel like a 5 star experience at all times.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

After a one day meeting in Heraklion I decided to spend a couple of days with my family in a resort on the coast to Kandia. Considering that most resorts were fully booked, we were lucky to find a family room at the Grecotel Club Marina Palace. The resort is huge. At the time of our staying it was literally invaded by Russians. We were extremely lucky to be given the farest room from the reception and restaurant area. As a consequence, the room was peaceful and not smelly (because of the kitchens), with a nice terrace facing the sea. The only beach of the hotel is very small considering the number of guests. We found it also very dirty with litter bins regularly full of anything. The beach environment of many "guests" drinking liters of free beer and splitting on the seaside is not so nice to see.
The two big pools were also very crowded, nobody pays attention to get a shower before diving into the pool water and that is also not so nice to see either.
The main restaurant is offering a huge variety of food, sometimes they should look after quality instead of quantity, but that seemed not to be the case. Tables are very close to each other and you may end up between several babies with their iPads watching different movies while eating.
The hotel staff is very nice and helpful which compensate many of the guests educational gaps.

Room Tip: Ask for the farest possibly room from the reception so that you can skip noise and smell from the ki...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

Our family (wife, 4,5-year old son and I) stayed here for 12 nights in September. We did extensive search to choose appropriate hotel before the trip and can tell you now that we made a right choice. Prior to arrival I did send a letter to the hotel explaining that this trip is dedicated to the birthday anniversary of my wife and asking to provide us with room with good view, close to the sea and not on the ground floor. To their credit hotel staff replied very quickly - Kostas, Rooms Division Manager informed us that they will try to do their best to fulfill our wishes.
Room
On arrival we were given with fantastic front sea view first floor room (#532) right in the middle of the resort and very close to the sea. In 5 minutes after arrival to the room we received call from Kostas who did ask whether we like our room – very nice touch showing professional attitude. Room itself is quite big in size with high ceilings, walls are painted in bright colors, furniture is very nice and cozy, also featuring fridge and free safe. Bathroom is spacy enough, with bathtub and good quality bath products. And the last but not the least room has a wonderful balcony providing breathtaking uninterrupted views of the sea equipped with chairs and table. The only thing you should be aware of is that bathrobe and slippers are available only in Suites and can’t be provided to standard rooms even on request.
Territory
Hotel has really huge territory spread over the slope coming towards the sea. It is divided into 2 parts: “Main resort” – this area is bigger situated closer to the sea has 4 open-air swimming pools (incl. 1 with sea water) and one 1 indoor swimming pool in the Spa and “Suites” – this one is located on the top of the resort (in fact you even need to cross the small road from main reception in order to reach the Suites area) a little bit far from the sea – this part has additional swimming pool, also the hotel’s mini aqua park is located here.
Honestly, all photos available don’t do hotel a justice. In reality the hotel grounds are well manicured and very green with huge number of different flowers, providing very peaceful setting for your vacation. Despite the fact that hotel was 100% full during our stay you can hardly find a person while walking during the day. Hotel pools conveniently located in different areas of the resort and each one has enough sun beds, so at any time you will not have any problems to find the proper place to relax near the pool. Also hotel features small amphitheater, where majority of child and adult shows are performed every evening.
Restaurants (F&B)
This is 100% All inclusive resort, meaning that all guest are on All inclusive basis. Hotel has Main restaurant, located near the lobby area where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. Also resort has 3 a-la carte restaurants (Asian, Greek and Italian). In addition to restaurants hotel has number of well-located in different parts of the territory. Food in main restaurant is of very good quality (especially for All inclusive hotel), they try to change the variety every day. You can always find different kinds of meat, poultry and fish served in different styles as well as wide variety of vegetables and fruits. Probably the only minor complaint is that for the breakfast they are only serving omelets already pre-cooked, you can’t order for the omelet to be prepared in front of you with your preferred ingredients. We did try all 3 a-la carte restaurants and did like all of htem except Asian, which from our perspective is not worth visiting. Also on one of the nights we did try their BBQ dinner – when you are proposed to cook/grill food yourself and then eat it – was very nice experience and our son loved it very much. All a-la carte restaurants are open only for dinner, in the meantime Greek restaurant located near the sea also serves buffet lunch – the variety there is smaller than in main one but if you want to have a short break from sun bedding near the sea this is great choice. For ice cream lovers the very big advantage of the hotel is availability of 4-5 types of ice cream all day long in different areas of the hotel you can take it yourself and also in majority of cases several toppings are available and what is most important all this is for free. Moving to drinks - the variety of free drinks is very good indeed. They have both local and imported spirits, cocktails are also included in All inclusive concept. Red wine is of good quality, while is less delicious. Soft drinks are ok, but the small downside is total absence of normal juices – what they are serving is rather fruit drinks not juices. The same applies to fresh juices. During the breakfast one fresh juice is available (usually it was a mix of watermelon, apple and smth else). At all other times all fresh juices are against a fee of 4 Euros/glass. F&B manager was present every day to greet guest near the main restaurant or in the evening near one of a-la carte’s – he did have a close eye on what is going on and supported his staff in case of necessity. Summarizing our F&B experience I would say that it was very good especially for AI hotel.
Sea and Beach
Sea is very clean indeed, beach is not big– in fact hotel has 2 beaches – 1 totally private which belongs to the hotel and another one is the part of public beach located in 100 meters from main one and dedicated to the hotel’s guests. Both beaches have sun beds and umbrellas while their quantity can’t fulfill all needs of hotel guest and if the hotel is 100% full like during our stay if you arrive at 9.00 in the morning you can hardly find a free place on the beach. The main reason for this is that many guests are reserving their “place under the sun” with their beach towels and then eventually are not even coming to the beach during the day. So hotel management really has to find a way to cope with this. By saying this I also would like to say that beach on the other hand is probably one of the biggest advantages of the hotel because it has an artificial wave breaker/pier. The sea in this area of the island is usually quite rough so in the absence of pier it would not be possible to swim majority of days especially for children. I did have a look at the coast line between hotel and Rethymno and can tell you that almost none of other hotels doesn’t have such advantage, meaning their guests swimming in the sea is only limited to the days when the sea is calm. While in Marina Palace you can swim almost under any sea conditions - our son was swimming even when the sea was heavily storming.
Sport and entertainment
There are many options for sport lovers incl. football, beach volleyball, water polo, table and lawn tennis all equipment is available on request and is free. Also all non-motorized water sports are free, plus you can always use motorized water sports against a fee. Entertainment team is great they are trying to involve as mush people as they can while not annoying. Children animation and mini club is Great – providing all day entertainment for children of different age groups. This is very important as hotel is family oriented – app. 80-90% of all visitors are families with children.
Staff
Hotel staff is worth separate mentioning- all staff members are really welcoming, pleasant and trying to fulfill all your needs (separate thanks to Julia on reception). The professionalism is on really high level, hotel management – Rita (guest Relation), Kostas (Rooms Division Manager), Katerina (Guest Relation Officer), F&B Manager (apologies forgot his name), Stefanos –General Manager are always there to help and assist you in every possible way and simply professionally doing their job. Just a small example – at the end of our stay our son became sick – we were proposed all kind of help and support from the hotel and this was very pleasant indeed. On departure day we were provided with small gift from the hotel - on the occasion of forthcoming birthday of my wife - Agreco farm products (btw Agreco is Grecotel’s owned organic farm which is located 17 km form Club Marine Palace and definitely worth visiting). One more example of the attention to the smallest details and professional attitude to the job.

Summarizing I would strongly recommend this wonderful resort to all those who would like to spend unforgettable vacation on picturesque Crete.

I have to agree with George1971 below: it is a five star all-inclusive, but not a 'five star' in the classical sense. We stayed with our family of four and if it weren't that my son got sick after a few days, it would have been a near perfect stay. It is a beautiful property, village-style, on a slight slope towards the sea. The colors are really intense, with all the flowers and plants and the blue skies, pools and sea. The food is good, reasonably varied although after a week I would not have minded a change. But even the most demanding children will not remain hungry here... The room we had was central, clean, and spacious, cleaned daily and with a view of the sea. There are enough pools so there really is no need to reserve seats. The staff is friendly although visibly tired at the end of the season. There is of course a lot to explore in Crete, so don't stay in the hotel! They make lunch packets on demand. We did not try the entertainment, but beware, it seemed to cater mainly for German and Russian speaking children. The clientele was international and generally 'well-behaved'. I can advise it for families.

5 Star - All inclusive. It may not be mutually exclusive terms but it is a rather contradictory of a term. It is a fine hotel where we spend 7 days worry free; which is the main benefit of an all-inclusive resort but if I had to review it as a five star hotel I would have had a number of comments. For example: if you want to eat a crepe in a five star hotel (charged accordingly) you would have been annoyed if your choices would have been limited to: Chocolate praline for sweet crepes and cheese and ham for salt ones, and those crepes cut in half to speed up the queue. For an all-inclusive afternoon snack though (for free, eat as much as you like) it is OK.
Nevertheless, breakfast was very good; the only comment was that it was a little repetitive, lunch and dinner in the main restaurant very good as well. The Chinese restaurant was not as good and we didn’t appreciate the fact that the booking form was opening every Monday for the whole week, therefore on Monday morning there was a large queue with people booking for the Chinese and the “Gourmet” restaurant for the next days. All inclusive “includes” (!) Breakfast, Morning Snack, Beach Snack, Lunch (either in main restaurant or the tavern), Afternoon Snack (Crepes), Dinner (either in main restaurant, the two themed restaurants or the tavern), Late Snack, Drinks and all day ice cream, coke, coffee and tea.
The rooms were OK but what someone should pay attention to is that this is a “village” type of resort. That means that the rooms are distributed all over the place with corridors and allays between them like a small village. We had a ground floor room overlooking the left side of the resort, with a nice garden as the end of “our” terrace. Other rooms were not as nice as this. You could end up with “your” terrace 2 meters away from the main beach or pool access alley. First floor rooms typically are more standard: There is a balcony overlooking the sea or the gardens.
All alleys and terraces are full of plants. They are (truly) proud of that and once per week the garden supervisor can take you for a tour across the resort to explain the different plants.
The beach is small and crowded. Sun beds “reservation” (oups I forgot my towel there!) is extremely common. It is a sandy beach and if you go early in the morning or the afternoon you will enjoy the place.
Pools were very nice and you could choose from a 60 cm one with toys and a water slide, the two mains, the quite one (in the suites area), and the salty one.
Staff was well trained to be polite and everybody was trying to be helpful.
Entertainment for guests and kids is a minus. There is none. Actually TUI (the German tour operator which sends a lot guest in Grecotel Hotels) has quite a complete program… in German of course. So if you would like to freshen up your German language skills fill free to participate. The program was in that language only and loosely translated to Russian (another client of TUI?). Greeks, English and French “minorities” should take care of themselves!
All in all a fine all-inclusive hotel. I would recommend it to anyone that will not freak out with the following image: 10 6years old kids trying to self-service for themselves ice cream using the scoop to the 3-4 flavors and “having fun” or making a whole of a mess. Ha! Enjoy!

Room Tip: Ask specifically for your view as it is different for every single room!
