“Very nice hotel....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014

Very nice hotel, clean, very friendly staff and very beautifull room. We stayed in the familyroom in the main building, and it was very spatious and very clean. The food was also very good, a lot to choose from and a lot of variety (we stayed 2weeks and every day different things). The hotel area was very beautifull, very green, a lot of flowers and beautifull trees cut in special shapes. But outside there was nothing to see, you need to take the bus, little train or car. The animation team did there best, a lot of activities to choose from and every night entertainment. There was a mini a maxi and a teenie club. Our kids are teenagers, but they were very dissapointend when they found out that the teenie club was only for French speeking persons. Last year we also went to an Iberostar in Tenerife and the Teenie club was excellent, so we decited to choose an Iberostar again with a Teenie club, but that was not a good idea....they mentioned it was for all nationalities but that's not true...It's so that there are a lot of French people in the hotel, but all the staff and other animators talked other languages. Only one recommendation to the hotel is to do something about the garbage location in front of the hotel, we saw it every day when we walked to our room, a hugh pile and it smelled a lot, maybe place a wall or a shed above it, so guest don't see the garbage.

We recently stayed at the Creta Marine for 10 nights. The hotel is situated in a barren, desolate area of Crete. In no-mans-land actually and you would certainly need to hire a car to get the benefit of sight-seeing on the rest of the Island. We arrived around midnight, checked in and had to pay 17 euros per room for the safe. Obviously, 34 euros in total as we had two rooms. I know this is clearly stated on the website but I have never stayed anywhere else that does this. In fact, I would describe this this as nothing more than a room tax and it needs to be abolished. The rooms were of 4 star standard, a little old-fashioned but nice and clean. No complaints with them really.

There is a lovely big swimming pool, with things going on all day. Nice and lively as we like it but also some smaller pools which are quieter and more relaxing. The only negative thing I can say really is entertainment around the pool gets repetitive - same songs, same routines every day. Be nice if they could mix it up a bit. The pools are salt water as many people have said but we didn't find it a big deal.

The food is lovely, the best all-inclusive meals we have ever had. Plenty of variety too. But it is also here where Creta Marina has one of its many bizarre rules. The snack bar is situated next to the main pool area. One day, around lunch we had a wander over to it. The snack bar was completely empty. We took a seat and the waiter came over and asked if we had booked. We found out that you had to book the snack bar and give 24 hours notice. So we had to leave! My understanding of a snack is something quick and convenient, not something I have to book 24 hours in advance. A silly rule.

The dining at the evening took a twist too. I'm on holiday in a hot country so only took shorts for the evening. The shorts I took are smart, tasteful going out-type shorts and for the first two evenings ther was no problem. On the third night I was told by the manager of the hotel I couldn't enter the main restaurant as I wasn't allowed in as I was wearing shorts and there had been complaints from other guests (not about me personally) but guests wearing swimming-type shorts I presume. When I told the manager I had no long pants as I was in a very hot country, he suggested I have a walk down to the local supermarket and buy some cheap pants for a couple of euros. Presumably where he had bought his suit from. I declined his offer and this was to my benefit as we took the little train outside the hotel to Panormas and dined in one of the many beautiful tavernas there for a few nights. I recommend you do this. Really nice place in the evening.

Tried one of the al-a-carte restaurants one evening and opted for the Mexican. This was basically the day-time snack bar with a couple of sombreros nailed to the wall. No music, devoid of any atmosphere, with staff who looked thoroughly miserable. There is no menu and you basically get what you are given. 4 courses in all. The food was cold and it was basically slapped down on the table in front of us. Not a pleasant experience, a disaster in fact and we didn't go back or try the other al-a-carte restaurant.

Overall, in spite of the hotel's bizarre rules we had a nice relaxing holiday. Animation team work hard and are nice and friendly. We wouldn't return. The hotel needs to join the twentieth century and abolish its silly rules.

Top tips - do visit Bali Beach, a 57 euro round trip and visit a tavern on the beach front called The Rising Sun, you wont be disappointed.

Do use the little train and try the many tavernas in Panormas.

If you use the local bus outside the hotel you have to buy your tickets from the supermarket in the hotel. Nobody tells you this. Get a timetable at reception.
Dont use the water-sports on the complex, they are a rip-of. Approximately 115 euros for one hour to visit some caves in a speed boat. Or, book a trip independently in Panormas 105 euros for an all day trip to visit the most beautiful beach we have seen, Elefanisi beach!

Dear Andy,

Firstly we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your personal impressions on your recent stay at our IBEROSTAR Creta Marine hotel. It is only through feedback such as yours that we are able to maintain and indeed, where necessary, improve upon the service that we provide to our valued guests.

We lament your disappointment on the extra charge for the use of the safe, however this is a standard applied in all IBEROSTAR hotels on a global level; we shared your comments with our central office for information.

Moreover we regret reading that apparently you were not properly informed about our location and our hotel services prior to your reservation; as you can see on our website, our location is duly reported as well as the reservation required for the Dyonissos snack bar for lunch. The dress code for gentlemen for dinner is also duly reported as well as the fixed menu for the theme restaurant; for future occasions we encourage you to contact our call center from where we can offer you a personalized booking guidance and give you all the relevant information for you to plan your holidays accordingly.

On the other hand, we are glad you felt comfortable in the room we accommodated you in; our goal is to provide comfortable and spotless accommodations in unbeatable locations and we thank you for letting us know you were satisfied with yours.

The passion for gastronomy being one of the prime pillars of our company, we greatly appreciate your praising comments on our restaurant where our professional Chefs strive to surprise our guests with a high standard gastronomy and the possibility to savor the best of the local cuisine as well as the finest international delights.

Last but not least, we are also very grateful for your nice comments towards our animation staff, their enthusiasm is contagious and they strive to offer a wide variety of leisure and sport activities throughout the day as well as entertaining evening shows to make our guests' stay a memorable one.

Please know, your feedback will be shared with the appropriate managers for further review. Thank you again for visiting us and we hope to get a chance to exceed your expectations in the future.

My boyfriend and I visited the hotel in June and were expecting a high quality hotel as it was rated 4 star. We were immediately disappointed as we were put in a room at basement level which seemed rather dark and uninviting. The gardens outside were lovely and extremely well kept however we felt we had been hidden away underground.
The all inclusive cocktails were very disappointing and not to the usual standard I have experienced. They were all poured out of pre- made jugs and I was horrified to find the straws in my drinks were clearly used ones as they were all very bitten- this wasn't just a one off, it happened on several occasions! I am sure a 4 star hotel can afford to buy new straws for each drink!
The food in the main buffet restaurant was also very disappointing. There was a great selection but the quality was poor, almost school dinner like! The meal in the restaurant on the sea front was lovely but you could only eat here once in the week. Booking the other restaurants also became hard later in the week with long waiting lists. We travelled into the nearby village of Panormos for several meals and there was some lovely restaurants on the sea front there.
Thinking back, I wish I had raised these points at the hotel when staying there but if I am honest the reception staff were at times very unwelcoming.
It was impossible to get a sun bed around the main pool as people had reserved them with towels from very early in the morning. It was a surprise to have to pay for a sunbed on the beach when we had paid for all inclusive!
I was also very shocked and disappointed at the selection of snacks available on all inclusive at the snack bars for lunch. You could get a ham and cheese baguette yet you had to pay for a toastie?! You also had to pay extra for a hotdog! If this is the case this should be outlined more in details on the all inclusive however, I would expect these sort of snacks to be included!
The communal areas of the hotel were very clean and well kept and we did enjoy a break in the sun, just a shame to be disappointed by the hotel after paying so much!

Dear Jenny,

Although we sincerely regret reading that your latest stay at our IBEROSTAR Creta Marine hotel fell short of your expectations, we are grateful for the time you spent to share your feedback on your overall holiday experience among us; we certainly believe that there is always room for improvement and your constructive critics will help us identify areas that could use more attention to detail.

We however would like to point out that we allocate our rooms in accordance with the room type selected at the time of reservation; the room type you selected was a standard double room and these are situated at ground level, our hotel being situated on a hill leading to the sea, these accommodations afford views over our extensive gardens, we do not have rooms underground.

Moreover, we were very surprised to read that our expert barmen served you cocktails with used straws, as this is not reflective of our high standards of service and we have never received this kind of feedback from our guests; for future occasions we encourage you to contact our management team to point out any imperfection, they will be enchanted to assist you.

All the beaches in Greece are public, hoteliers have to pay a rental fee to the community, this is why hotels apply a fee for the use of sunbeds.

All Inclusive snacks are served mid-morning and midafternoon, for all meals our main restaurant served extensive buffets included for our All Inclusive guests; at the other bars some dishes may be on extra charge as reported on our brochure and the welcome letter handled at the time of booking.

At IBEROSTAR we have a true passion for gastronomy and are fully aware that meals are an aspect of primary importance for our guests to enjoy their holidays abroad, this is why our expert team of chefs strives to surprise our guests with high quality culinary delights both local and international, so as be able to savor many different flavors at every single meal and make it one of the best added values to their holiday among us.

On the other hand we thank you for pointing out the beauty of our complex with well-maintained gardens and spotless installations at all times.

Hopefully we will be able to fulfill your expectations in the near future, and remain at your entire disposal for any request you might have regarding coming vacations. Our main commitment is to offer the best vacation to our guests, based on the service provided by professionals and the delivery of high quality products; therefore we are always willing to guide you in our call center or through our webpage to make sure that you book an IBEROSTAR hotel that can make all your wishes come true.

A little disappointing, not the usual Iberostar standard. The room was in need of an update. It was in the basement of the hotel. The balcony overlooked the roof of the kitchen. Very poor room which was below standard.
The drinks were also very disappointing a small choice on all inclusive.
Also no available sunbeds for the whole duration of our holiday, these were reserved each day.
The details when booking advised one a la carte visit per week, we arrived Thursday for one week and attempted to book this on the Sunday morning for the Tuesday evening were advised no availability until the following Saturday, after we had left. Also very unusual and disappointing was no iron in the room and none available we were advised laundry service only....very expensive.
The entertainment team provided evening entertainment as expected but unfortunately in a room rather like a conference room without a bar? Which reduced the numbers. The bar area provided music 3 evenings of the 7 we were there but very poor an elderly organ player more aimed at possibly a much older audience and the other nights a quiet quite dull atmosphere. We booked for 7 nights and found it to be far too quite on an evening. I recommend not for more than a week or for anyone with teenage children, possibly more appropriate for couples looking for a very quiet holiday away from everything.
On a positive note the service recieved by restaurant and bar staff was excellent. The rooms and public areas very clean and tidy. Great selection of food.
Rethymnon with lots of shops, bars and restaurants takes a hour on the bus costing 2euros each way, quite a journey but worth a visit.
This is the eighth time I have stayed in an iberostar and previous excellent hotels influenced this booking. We paid more than other hotels available in greece and feel this wasn't reflected. A 3 star at best.

Room Tip: Ensure it isn't a basement room.

Let me start with saying that we have enjoyed our holiday in Crete, in Iberostar Creta Marine. Yet there are some disturbing factors (connected to dining) that makes me rate this hotel only average.

The hotel has a nice location at the sea (you need to have a car if you want to enjoy the rest of Crete as the hotel is 15 km from the nearest town, Rethymno), very nice gardens, 3 salt water swimming pools and its own sea bays. Some would argue that bays protected by barriers are not "real" sea beaches. For us (traveling with small children) they provided the ideal opportunity to enjoy the sea - as far as we experienced most other beaches at Crete (except Elafonisi) usually had large waves obviously not ideal for children.

The bungalows (we stayed at the seafront) are large, well maintained and have all the amenities needed. A real plus point is the fact we could enjoy the sunsets from our balcony.

And now to dining. This hotel has the strange habit to ask man to wear long trousers at dinner - and the staff does everything to strictly enforce this. They claim its Iberostar's global policy; yet at their sister hotel (Iberostar Creta Panorama) man can wear shorts... For me this rule is ridicolous for minimum two reasons. First we came to leisurely enjoy our vacations - in hot weather this goes together with leisurely clothing. Second for me it is always strange if something / somebody wants to look more vs what it is. This is a 4 star family holiday resort, not a Grand Hotel...

Another point is that although the food variety is huge (at average quality) they didn't seem to care about to always have a couple of tasty, but simple choices (e.g chicken fingers) for children. Given that at least half the guests are families there should be more attention given to them.

For me a holiday is a holiday - and this doesn't go well together with strict rules. Therefore, in the future we will opt for more easy-going choices vs Iberostar.

My wife and I stayed here in early July 2014. Have stayed at several Iberostar and knew them to be of a good standard. Unfortunately booked via internet and had a 'garden view' room. Had these before and enjoyed views of lovely gardens with perhaps distant views inland. However at this Hotel, we were allocated room 102 which was below ground level and actually looked upwards over an earth bank with trees in to a service road to the back of hotel. The balcony had a large extractor vent from the staff area below which was level with the balcony and vented about 8 feet away. The internal fan/motor was going 24 hours a day and the smells occasionally blew back towards the balcony, sometimes a sewage smell. Looking down from the balcony was the staff area below.
We kept the door to the balcony closed and asked to be moved. Offered another garden view room also below ground level but with a large tree outside balcony and facing several other balconies in a courtyard. This room felt dark and dingy and we decided to pay for an upgrade. Unfortunately this took 2 days to sort and we didn't unpack the suitcases until we moved rooms, The upgraded room cost £65 for the remaining 5 days of our holiday and was lovely. We will always check now and ensure we get a view.
This hotel was also the worst ever for getting sunbeds. Many guests sat on towels on the grass as sunbeds booked by 7.30 most mornings. We only met or heard 2 other British couples in the hotel. Even though warning signs on all parasols not to leave towel on all day if not in attendance, that's what most people did.
The food was very good but not much potato variations. Red or white wine only available as all inclusive not rose which cost more.
The staff were really friendly in restaurants and reception and the entertainment was OK.
These few issues spoilt it for us and for that reason we wouldn't return.

Room Tip: Get a sea view, don't get a garden view

We stayed as a family of four and the first thing to mention is that there are literally no English people there (this wasn't a problem for us, however, it would have been nice if my 12 year old daughter could have made some friends).

Can't fault the hotel at all though apart from a couple of minor points.

The food in the main restaurant was of a very high standard - always lots of variety and good quality, probably the best food I have had at an all inclusive hotel.

The Mexican restaurant was truly awful! The food (which was stone cold and unappetizing - the fish dish has put me off fish forever!) was just put in front of you with no explanation of what it was and no menu to show you what you were eating. No music or atmosphere, just a few sombrero hats on the walls.

We tried to eat at the snack bar one lunchtime for a change from the main restaurant but were told that you had to reserve (despite the restaurant being completely empty).

All the staff were excellent, very friendly, efficient and can't do enough for you. Animation team were very good with plenty of daytime activities round the pool - we didn't watch the evening shows so can't comment on them.

The beach isn't particularly attractive, although this isn't the hotel's fault, all the coastline in the area isn't the best with concrete barriers - I certainly wouldn't pay to rent a sun bed, preferring to spend the day round the pool. I like a nice beach and the hotel beach looks nothing like the one in the pictures. We went on a day trip to a beach called Elofonissi which was stunning and well worth the 2.5 hour coach transfer.

The rooms are more than adequate although could do with a bit of updating but are kept clean and plenty of storage. Ladies, take a hairdryer though because the hairdryers in the rooms are terrible.

All in all, we had a great holiday, although I wouldn't return due to the little niggles above.
