Posted by Lisa on behalf of all of the family who came (19 of us)

Well, where to we start? I suppose by saying that after returning to Zeus each year for the past 5 years (during May/June time), we still love our holidays at the Zeus - and each time our party size increases - the latest visit in June 2011 19 of us descended on poor Viki and her family. But, what I will say is that on every visit, the warm and friendly welcome we receive has never faultered from the very first visit when we were strangers, to the latest visit which was like returning to see family.
Where I will admit that the rooms are not well equipt in terms of crockery/cutlery etc, I must also point out that whatever you request is always warmly accomodated by either Viki, Katerina or the friendly cleaning staff. The rooms themselves we have always found to be very clean and spacious with regular cleaning/towel changing service. In terms of the bar area and eating/restaurant facilities, I must say that some of the previous comments have puzzled me a little! Where does it state on any of the tour operators details that this hotel offers a full restaurant or waitress at the bar??? Nowhere as far as I have seen! It is listed as a self-catering property, so where is the trouble with having to help yourself to a drink or ice creams from the well-stocked fridge/freezer ( I for one certainly didn't expect for Katerina or any other of the staff to have to get up to get our drinks everytime we wanted one) and the good nature of the family shows that they are very trusting in leaving this open for guests to help themselves to what they want and keep a tab running to pay when ready.
While the bar/cafe area isn't huge and food choices are not wide-span, again the accomodating efforts to provide what was asked for can not be faulted (and there is currently a new building in process for a larger reception and restaurant/bar). Out of 19 of us, the majority were happy to stay up at Zeus for breakfast/lunch most days (while we ventured into Ireon of an evening for main meals) and never had any grumbles about the food we ate (always well-cooked, tasty and plentiful).
The pools at Zeus are lovely, and were always well kept (ok, so there are the odd little bugs/insects which can be found floating, but unless there was someone to clear this out every 5 mins, I think this is just nature not uncleanliness - and if it is a problem you can always use the nets available to fish them out yourself). The 3 children (well 6 or 7 if you include some of us adults) spent most of our days enjoying the fun in the pool anyway.
In summary, all I can say is that for a self-catering, 3-star apartment, the Zeus is a delightful, warm and friendly place to stay. It is family-run and so not as commercialised or policy-set as other hotels, but in terms of value for money, location, enjoyability and friendliness I would say it is way above basic. If, however you are expecting 5-star treatment with waitress service etc included, I would suggest you pay for it and look elsewhere!! Thank you to Viki, Katerina and all of the family/friends/staff at Zeus for the lovely holidays so far, and here's to many more x

Room Tip: Rooms 7-15 in the separate blocks to the left of the bar/pool area are the best.

My partner and I visited Samos this summer. Samos is a lovely place and the locals couldn't have been more hospitable; extras after dinner, free drinks etc. Which is why we were so confused by the way that the staff at the Zeus apartments treated us. When we arrived it was chaotic and we were thrown our keys and pointed to the general direction of our room. I completely agree with previous posts re: feeling like you were intruding upon a family home. The staff didn't want you there and sat in the bar all day and night making guests feel completely unwelcome and intimidated; we daren't even ask for a drink. Over the course of a few days we watched all of the women from the family prepare the favours for someones wedding; ribbon, almonds, taffeta strewn all over the 'guest tables' - would you go and get a drink???? We even watched a Dutch man ask for some breakfast for himself and his family at about 10.30am - unfortunately, he asked the gardener - who seemed to be the only person ever around. Not surprisingly, noone got fed. The accommadation was OK for the money....we had a few issues with it; the fact that there are no utensils or pots and pans to cook with (2 forks and knives) and our 'double room' was two cruddy single beds pushed together...not so bad....apart from the fact that one had been made about 4 inches taller so they were on COMPLETELY different levels!!!!!!
Samos was lovely, the accommodation was ok but we felt like we were completely unable to ask the staff ANYTHING as noone spoke English (well, they pretended they didn't anyway!)
Visit Samos but do not stay here!!

we have just returned from the greek island of samos and the beautiful village of ireon , we stayed at the zeus apartments, before i begin please ignore any bad reviews you may have read !!! i think these are written by people wanting to keep the zeus to themselves! the rooms are massive the location is simply superb the views out of this world the bar always well stocked beer on ice , food cooked on demand , swimming pools great , gardens fantastic and the lady and her family that run the zeus are lovely attentive hosts , all this coupled with the south london humour of james and the relaxed figure of a completely chilled ray from margate sipping an ice cold mythos , not to mention the lovely charming dutch people , and the never ending relaxed charm of the greeks made this a fantastic all round holiday, the last great surprise was excellent quite wall mounted air con at good rates !!! kind regards to all mark tinniswood

We have just returned from a week's stay at the Zeus Appartments. We found the studio to be good value for money, it was very clean and spacious. It would have been nice to have had a daily bin emptying service and as other reports have mentioned take your own bin bags as none are provided. We never saw anyone in the reception building, the door was always closed but they key was left in the lock. They have a bookcase with books to loan (English and foreign) and several folders with holiday info but all these were in Dutch/German, take note Thomson! The Zeus is about a 10 minute walk into the village, we didn't stay around the pool much as there was no breeze. The beach in Ireon is pebbly/shingle and quite small. We hired a car for a couple of days and visited Kokkari which seemed a bit more lively than Ireon, if we went back to Samos I think that we would stay there next time. We tried several tavernas but found our favourite by far was Aygara two blocks back from the harbour front on a corner, infact we ate here 4 nights out of the seven. The food was excellent each time (huge portions!) and the waiter spoke good English and was very friendly. Ireon is a very quiet place, it seemed very Greek and had a lovely harbour front where the locals sat outside their houses to chat with neighbours, everyone was friendly said 'yassos' or 'kali mera' when we walked by. All in all we had a lovely relaxing holiday in a quiet resort and found Samos to be a beautiful island, so glad that we got the car and went exploring!

3rd to 17th September 2009

We have just returned from the Zeus apartments in Ireon Samos. Having read many reviews before going I was a bit concerned and wondered if we had done the right thing in booking. Having spent 2 weeks at the Zeus I can honestly say, don’t be put off, on the whole it is a popular place, never an empty room and close to all amenities. Ireon beach and town square with lots of restaurants and bars (good food and reasonably priced) is a ten minutes walk along a flat well lit road

The front of the Zeus didn’t look too appealing on arrival, it could do with a bit of tarmac or something as we had to manoeuvre our cases over some rough ground, but not a major problem, once passed this, all was fine.

The rooms themselves were nice and spacious.

Sleeping area was roomy, plenty of wardrobe space, dressing table, mirror and plug socket for hairdryer. The beds were comfortable and had small bedside cabinets. The balcony leading of off this area was furnished with a table and chairs.

Kitchen area again very spacious had a table and chairs, TV, and in our apartment an extra bed. On arrival we didn’t have a kettle so we asked for one, we also asked for an extra pillow and clothes airer, we got all three by the end of that day. We had enough crockery, cutlery, glasses, pots and pans for our needs. Although cups were provided we bought a couple of cheap mugs from the local supermarket as we like more that 4 mouthfuls of tea/coffee. On reflection I am sure had we asked for mugs we would have been given some.

The shower room was one of the biggest we have had (have been to 14 different Greek Islands, some more than once). The shower has a tray but does not have a shower curtain or screen, this I feel is a good thing, more hygienic and gives more space to shower in. There were also plenty of shelves to put your toiletries etc. We always take a washing up sponge, t-towel and a couple of J-cloths, (one for the shower room, quick and easy to dry the floor after showering).

My only criticism of the Zeus would be the amount of times the bins were emptied and the pool area which could do with a bit more attention.

We arrived on a Thursday to a clean room, I asked how often the rooms were cleaned, sheets and towels changed. The owner told me for those arriving on a Thursday the rooms would be cleaned again on the Monday. Therefore in our two-week stay our room was cleaned 3 times (on the Monday, following Thursday and last Monday). We didn’t mind the room not being cleaned in-between those days as we cleared up after ourselves anyway and the sheets and towels were changed on the days stated, but to leave kitchen and especially toilet bins for that length of time is not hygienic.

As we are asked in Greece not to flush toilet paper away but to use bins provided (due to narrow waste pipes), I feel these should automatically be emptied daily as in other Greek accommodation we have stayed in. We emptied the bins ourselves and I would suggest you pack a small roll of pedal bin liners if you feel you need to do the same. There are roadside bins only a few minutes walk either side of the apartments.

There is plenty of space around the pool and a lot of grass area for sunbeds. We only saw the pool being cleaned once and that was the day before we came home, didn’t stop us using it though and we are all fine, but we do feel it could/should be cleaned more often. Also the grass area could do with being cut more frequently. Unfortunately there are a lot of insects – this can’t be helped – and a lot seem to end up in the pool. There are fishing nets at the side of the pool which we and other guests used regularly to scoop the insects out, I don’t think there is much else that could be done to solve the problem. There is also a children’s pool which could do with a bit of attention, there were no steps/ladders for youngsters to get in or out of the pool, so they would have to climb in and out.

We are beach people but the beach at Ireon was not to our liking, very small with large stones/pebbles that went all the way into the water. I went in wearing jelly shoes but slipped on algae on the rocks in the water and got in quicker than anticipated. There are not many hotels/apartments in Ireon with pools so we were grateful for the big pool at the Zeus.

Not sure how many people look after the Zeus, on many days we didn’t see anyone until mid-day/late afternoon and they soon disappeared. There is no visible reception and booking in was done at the bar area. Many days we spent by the pool and as there was no staff/family member present, guests were relied upon to help themselves to cold drinks/ice cream and pay when someone did turn up. The bar area was fine with tables and chairs although the bar itself could do with an update. We did have lunch there one day, which was nice and reasonably priced.

Taking everything into account, I would say the Zeus is reasonably priced and if there is anything you need or feels needs doing just say.
