“Classy, cosy and comforting”
Reviewed June 7, 2010

We stayed in the Emily Cottage and were very impressed by the understated but classy decor, which has a real cosy and comforting feel to it. Location was gorgeous with babbling brook + ducks, just in front of the cottage. Fire was all set ready to light, and the heater was on as well, awaiting our arrival. Breakfast provisions were good - cereal, local lovely apple juice, bacon, farm fresh eggs, tomato, bread and jam/butter/milk. Good selection of CD's - we really felt at home and wished we had more than one night to enjoy it. Very warm and comfortable bed. Loved it and would definitely recommend, and will return there for a longer visit.

My husband & myself arrived at the Cottages and were thrilled to find them exactly as they appeared on their website. The countryside was as beautiful as pictured, and serene. Amazingly the location is truly only 20 minutes from Hobart and is conveniently central to many attractions. The cottages are gorgeous, outfitted with natural timber, soft carpet & french doors that could open right out (lovely for summer when I'm sure we could have heard the stream from inside). They have loads of natural light but blinds for privacy and they have living room area to spare. The promised breakfast provisions were indeed quality produce, and the fireplace already set to light up. The Manger, Gary, was a real character and even my husband, who generally likes to keep to himself during 'time away from work' enjoyed meeting him. Another bonus was once we moved into the cottages, we were left alone to enjoy. We had just arrived from another destination within Tasmania, also advertised via website, at which we were very disappointed as we found nothing was truly as advertised. It was so refreshing to have such beauty and comfort for such a reasonable price and so well organised. Also, the corner spa was much larger than usual and there was complementary port on offer in front of the fire. All in all, by the time we left we felt rejuvenated and actually intend to return for a much longer stay.

We stayed in Emily cottage for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Gary and Anna were perfect hosts and the cottage was wonderful with its ready to light log fire, large spa bathroom and comfortable bed. The supplied breakfast ingredients were also good, home made bread and locally produced apple juice rated very highly. Friends stayed in Eliza cottage and were similarly impressed so don't hesitate to book either cottage.

The location in the Huon Valley, just 20 minutes from Hobart was excellent, with easy access to some great restaurants and wineries (a must visit is Peppermint Bay).

Having stayed in a number of places in Tasmania we felt the Cottages represented good value for money.

We stayed in the Emily Cottage and were greeted by the friendly local ducks. The cottage was well equipped, with a selection of dvd's and cds, if you didn't bring your own. The fireplace was prepared, so all we had to do was light the fire lighters and a short time later we had a roaring fire, which easily kept the whole cottage warm. Some basic breakfast provisions were provided, cereal, some bacon, eggs and a pot of strawberry jam, honey (solidified in the bottle) and four slices of bread wrapped in cling film. We ended up driving in to Huon to get a nice local cob loaf and some tomatoes to complete our breakfast. There was a couple of chocolates and some port when we arrived, but like the breakfast provisions they were pretty basic (quality street chocs I think). Overall we enjoyed our brief stay, with the main negative being the amount of noise transfered from the next door cottage, particularly from the plumbing and noisy cupboards.

We had heard fantastic things about Crabtree River Cottages from several friends who had stayed and were lucky enough to spend a romantic Friday night there.

As it was my partner's birthday, I asked for a bottle of sparkling wine to be delivered as an extra - this was not too much trouble for hosts Garry and Anna.

We had the romantic stay option - three course gourmet meal (mouth-watering), wine on the deck listening to the babbling creek and ducks (heaven), cosy cottage already warm as we walked in with fire (ahhh), mood music, great bed :). Late checkout, yummy cooked breakfast...just divine.

Was so good want to go back there very soon!

If you need accommodation in the Huon, Crabtree River Cottages is a must.

My wife and I just stayed here for our first anniversary in the Emily half of the cottage, and overall really enjoyed our stay - but as always it's the little things that make the difference between good and great. I haven't been to many B&B's though so maybe I'm just expecting too much..

The scenery and location is fantastic, the cottage itself is very clean and superbly well maintained. The bed is comfortable, the spa really is big enough for two people (not like some 'double' spas in other places), the large shower-head is divine and the breakfast foods taste great as well. You are only 30 minutes from Hobart, but it feels like the middle of nowhere.

This is where the contrasts come in. For the price you pay, there are things you expect that you don't get, and things you do get that you wouldn't expect. For example, the eggs and bacon and juice are high quality, but there is no peanut butter and cornflakes is the only cereal. You get a stereo, TV, DVD player and some cd's and DVD's to use, but the couch is a tiny 2 seater that is really hard to relax in. You get an espresso coffee machine, but no paper towel is provided. The bedroom is comfortable but it would be nice if some bathrobes were included. Likewise the bathroom but no shampoo or conditioner. The list goes on...

We also got the 'Romantic Dinner for Two' which should really be called 'Gourmet Meals on Wheels' because that's exactly what it is - you get dinner delivered to your door in polystyrene boxes and that's it. No candles, noone serving the meals or pouring the drinks - not much romance there. For an extra $120 (we paid $145 for just the room the first night, $265 for the 'romantic' dinner and accomodation the second night) I was expecting a lot more. You could pay that much for the same quality dinner at a fancy restaurant in Melbourne - and there you're paying for overheads! Sorry guys, but if that's at cost like you told me, you're getting ripped off. But anyway I guess romance is what you make it...

Overall the facilities were better than average and we had a great weekend away.

Oh and I should mention that Emily and Eliza are two halves of the same building - not separate cottages as suggested by the web site - and you do hear the other half going to the toilet/shower etc.

  • Liked — The scenery and facilities
  • Disliked — The egg flip (was bent so couldn't flip the eggs properly)
