“Not much to complain about”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

We booked a 10 day cheap holiday to help with recovery from an operation. We wanted peace and quiet and got that for the first 7 days. Firstly this is branded as a 3 star hotel and it is just that - which we found refreshing. We knew exactly what we could expect. On arrival at reception with only 1 other British couple from our bus it became very obvious this resort is aimed a French tourists. French guests get purple bands and made up 90% of the resort. Red bands means not French, Brits, Russians,Bulgarians, Italians were there with us. It is very easy to feel a bit left out of the entertainment and evening dancing if that kind of thing bothers you however we weren't there to take part in all that. Over the 10 days we chatted to/saw only 7 or 8 other British parties. Not sure if this will be true of the higher season. We were booked into a superior room and got 516 in Twin A block. We had a lovely sea view, air con and a fridge, which was brilliant as Greece is having an early season heat wave - 30 degrees most days. The room was adequate for 3 stars, clean, the bedding was a bit ragged and holey but no real issue. The bed was made everyday and swept round. Bedding was changed once in 10 days and towel change was sporadic, sometimes everyday, sometimes extra ones left and once none left at all, however a quick trip to reception and that was remedied in 10 minutes. The biggest problem with the room was the lack of sound proofing. You got all the noise from next door but 2 on either side, across the hall and above as well. Try and get a top floor room! Also be careful in the shower, the plug hole is at one side but the water runs off at the other. I nearly slipped a couple of times stepping into the wet pan from cleaning. Dining could be a bit of a ruckus. Only 1 of the dining rooms were open, restaurant Ulysses. Breakfast was very good choice, 4 cereals, huge choice of fruit, yogurts, bread, jams, meats and cheese, continental pastries and hot option although the bacon was suspect and sausage hot dogs from a tin. Lunch had great salad bar and the kebab wraps were yummy - except the day they were tinned hot dogs in the wrap! Plenty of hot choice too. Dinner had plenty of choice again. The soups were a bit tasteless and watery at times, I tried all different kinds of potato, wedges, jackets, cubes but always found they were only just cooked through, hard instead of fluffy. Both times I had carrots they were warm but still raw. Overall though we always found something to eat. The bars were well staffed for the time of year and we rarely had to queue, the staff were friendly and some were happy to chat. Most spoke ok English. The "pan pipes" bar was the quietest for us but I think that may be the area where the evening show may be as the ents team were practising dancing there to music from the Lion King, We will Rock You and Thriller shows. The only evening entertainment to speak of was a mini disco for kids, ballroom dancing all in the amphitheatre. There was a music quiz one night but it involved French music. What we couldnt understand was on all inclusive you only ever got a plastic cup but if you paid for a drink you were given a glass. The grounds could do with some maintenance. the grassed areas were pleasant but the pavements were pot holed and if you had someone unsteady on their feet, they would have to be careful, especially in the dark. We spent our 1st 2 days on the pool sun beds as the beach sun beds were 3 euros per day from April 20th. They were very uncomfortable plastic efforts and there were no shades. We used a tree near the entry to the waterslide but this shed a huge amount of pollen on us, staining our towels and not good for hay fever. We then used the beach after that. The sun beds were fabric with a shade. From 2nd may there was also a 3 euro per day charge for using the water slides. There was also a charge for the pedelos and canoes. Drinks outside the all inclusive were not cheap. 7 Euros for a cocktail and 3:50 for a 35cl bottle of beer that were 2 euros off complex for the 70cl bottle! Also the exchange rate offered at the hotel from pounds was 86 cents per pound. Just off complex to the right and the gift shop/tobacconist owner gave us 1.10 per pound. The village is quiet at the moment and does look like it may be suffering the effects of the recession. 3 days off leaving and they started blasting dance music out at the water slide pool, opened the pizza restaurant (pay extra) and blasted different music out there which made a bad mixture of each down at the beach. All in all for the money we paid, we could have done a lot worse.

Room Tip: Get a top floor room wherever you stay and pay the little extra for air con.

Stayed here as an extra holiday as it was a good price - stayed in the old hotel block which is a bit run down but we had a fantastic sea view. The bathroom was a bit tired but basically ok. Reception was ok - spoke good English as did all the staff. This is a large complex that caters primarily for the French tourists - think Les Butlins and you are kind of there. All the signs and entertainment were in French but as the hotel was less than a third full we could find a quiet corner and avoid it. We went looking for a quiet break and that’s what we had. The food is ok - cold but ok - at least its not kept at the wrong temperature it’s just let go cold. If they put water in the ban marie it would keep the food hot but hey that would be too sensible. The heaters are on - just no water, when I pointed this out it was met with a shrug! Beach was ok and nice and quiet - sand and small stones - sun beds were 3 euro a day - much more comfortable than the free plastic ones by the pool which has no shade and is under siege by the whooping and hollering masses with banging music. Worth taking the bus into Corfu town - only 2.2 euro each way. Would we come again? Probably not but we got what we paid for and it was a week in the sun.

Receptionists not very helpful more interested in looking after the french tourists which was ok . When we tried to mention that the extremely loud music from the night club at 03.30 in the middle of the night was not appreciated the young lady just shrugged her shoulders. On the last night We managed to speak to the night receptionist a young man who was very helpful and managed to get the music turned off at 02.00hrs. Didn't even taste any of the food it looked awful.
Rooms were clean, the drains stank and cleaner told me that there was a problem with them and they constantly put "farmaca" translated I am sure she meant chemicals... down them. Purely a place for French tourists travelling with Club Marmar (I think correct spelling) everything revolved around them which didn't bother us but if English families go there they may feel left out.

We booked a quick break through the Independent Newspaper and we were fooled. This 'all inclusive' was awful. A complex catering for up to 5,000 people. A coloured band on your wrist to show your inclusivity status. Butlin's style redcoats, unprepared rooms with electrics and water supply needing repair. The food was truly dire, cold and designed to cope wit the lowest common denominator of French, German, Albanian and British etc. It was OK when there were about 100 of us for the first few days but when 1,000 French descended on the 5th day it turned into a nightmare. We were drowned with loud music by the pool, dragooned into 'activities' and generally made to feel like interlopers. They even took the one English TV channel away.
The village of Maitika was mostly closed (although we did find a wonderful Taverna, LaVa, see separate review). This was a con job and actually impacted on our view of Corfu.

The first 3/4 days of our holiday were great it would have been a 4 or 5 out of 5 for just these days, we basically had the hotel to ourselves with a few other british families and couples there. Rooms were nice, food was nice, hotel staff were nice.

Take the blankets out of your room to put under your towel on your sunbed, much more comfortable as only plastic sunbeds by the pools. Go into Corfu town by bus, 2.20 euro each, takes about 20 minutes and it is lovely there. Lava grill was nice which is situated just outside the hotel, on the right and walk for about 5-10 minutes.

Then the french arrived, about 200 of them, all english tv was switched off and replaced with french, the entertainment was all in french and they was not allowed to speak in english (i felt sorry for the british kids!). We didnt have any entertainment until the French arrived, it was very loud (and we couldnt understand it lol) and nowhere to get away from it as it was then only pool open and in the evenings only one bar open as the outdoor entertainment area was not open yet. We were told we was staying in the 'french block' and had to put up with it, as it was the only part of the hotel open in April. When we raised this issue with the reception they ignored us as we obviously was not priority anymore.

When it is busy the British are put in different blocks which look more run down so I can now understand the bad reviews from last summer.

Everytime French guests arrived they all greeted them, singing and dancing round the coach. When British arrivals came, nothing not even a welcome. It was quite rude.

This was the only bad point about the hotel as they should state it is mainly a French Hotel. I don't know what it will be like peak summer it might be different as split up from the French but there still wouldnt be any British entertainment for the kids or adults.

I would go back if it was like the first half of our week away.

We travelled to this hotel on a last minute break. When we arrived I was immediately was impressed that

(1) we had a superior room with aircon despite only booking basic - the room was a good size and was clean
(2) the food was nice and labelled as vegetarian
(3) all inclusive meant all inclusive and most drinks were included apart from imports etc
(4) the staff were EXTREMELY friendly and welcoming
(5) the hotel was mainly full of english (was worried about being the minority reading the other reviews)
(6) the kids entertainment was in english
(7) the lady who ran the kids club was ADOREABLE - really sweet couldnt help enough and amazing with the kids. she took them to the beach/in the pool and got them doing all sorts and they all fell in love with her - she also ran the kids disco and got them dancing to the usual chocolate/euro kids dances

It became apparent that we had arrived out of season, this meant that a lot of the facilities were still being made ready. the beach was still being worked on and there were few sunbeds (which you didnt pay for)

We got to the bar straightaway, there were plenty of sunbeds at the pool, the restaurant was quiet etc. I must say that the day before we left the place completely transformed literally 1000 french people turned up, all the facilities, other beachside bars came open, there was loud entertainment including ball room dancing etc ! (not really my thing!)

I would say this was excellent value for money, rooms were cleaned daily, there were very friendly staff and kids club was amazing, i must say this review should be read bearing in mind it was a week or so out of season...

Room Tip: go slightly out of season...
