This was our first visit to Crete and to be honest we were not sure if we would like it. After just a few days at the Kokalas resort the wife and I realised that we had found a place that we both enjoyed. Kokalas is a family run hotel with Nikos, Rula and Franko making you feel extremely welcome, one of them is always on hand to help with your needs. Although the rooms have facilities to cook (twin hob and fridge), we made full use of having someone else do it for you. Their food is fresh and of the highest quality, we ate at several different tavernas in the two weeks we were there but I personally enjoyed Kokalas's chicken and chips and tuna salad the most. One night a week they hold a BBQ night and for around 10 euro per person you will eat like a king. This is a hotel to visit if you are looking to relax and enjoy good eating. The village has a small square with approx 10-15 taverna and shops, and is a two minute walk from the hotel. The beach is roughly the same distance and has a few beach bars that will rent you an umbrella and sun-bed for a small fee. We will happily return there for two weeks every year to recharge our batteries, and maybe drink some more of the Kokalas family raki.

We have just returned from our 8th visit to the fabulous Kokalasis Resort in Georgioupolis and cannot say enough about the warm welcome we always receive from Rula, Nikos and the rest of the family. The apartments are always spotless and kept that way by the hard work of Anna and Natasha. We love the traditional feel of the decor in the apartments, and have stayed in several of them on our visits. This was our first visit in May, we usually go in September, but we loved the Spring feel to the village and the flowers up in the mountains. Some of the Tavernas were not yet open, but those that were were as always very welcoming, especially the fish restaurant, Poseidon, one of our favourites, where you can choose and eat the best freshly caught fish. The welcome from Katarina, Nikos and the family is always warm.
We have been visiting Georgioupolis for over 20 years and although it has changed we still love the friendly family feel of the genuine village. The Kokalas Resort embodies all of this and we will be back again and again........

Room Tip: All rooms are good but the higher apartments are probably better for those without children.

Wonderful hosts Rula and Niko and Frank make you feel so welcome, they treat their guests as individuals without being intrusive. The appartments are individual - unusual fittings - not basic as most Greek appts. The swimming pool is excellent, and the Kokalas Breakfast is the best value in Georgioupolis. Guests return year after year to a warm welcome. A short walk to the beach and the village square. Memories are made of this.

Room Tip: all rooms are good - but new studios and appts have been recently been beautifully refurbished to an...

On the strength of TA reviews of Kokalas I booked for a weeks holiday (18>25 May). I then realised there were a lot of excellent reviews from one post reviewers. That got me a bit concerned as I've seen other places where interested parties have 'promoted' the hotel/restaurant etc. for there own benefit. I am very pleased to say all the excellent reviews are a true reflection of these lovely apartments. Indeed my Wife and I were amazed at how many other visitors we spoke to who had been going back to Kokalas repeatedly for years and years.

We had room 301 which was spacious and well equiped with a fridge, two ring hob, kettle, safe (2€ per day), hairdryer and lovely balcony overlooking the very clean pool area. The cleaners came in everyday apart from Sundays.

Weather-wise we had a perfect week, it was fine (26 to 30 degrees) during our stay with no rain and a stiff breeze picking up from Wednesday onwards which meant that in the shade it was a bit chilly but in the sunshine it was very pleasant having the breeze cooling you.

We split our time between the pool and beach and ventured up to the lake twice during our stay. The beach is great with a variety of bars some offering free use of beds and parasols (Tropicana) whereas others charge (Mike's Bar). The lake is a very nice setting with a number of tavernas where you can enjoy a drink or two.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink in Georgiouplois with the places in the square being the a little more expensive than others away from it. That said we fancied Gyros one night and went to the place in the square called Gyropoulis (geddit!). We ordered two (huge) Gyros, extra fries, a drink each and a chicken souvlaki which cost 11€, not bad. We also went to the Paradise restaurant which was OK, Wife liked her stifado but my kleftico was a bit disappointing, the sausage and bean stew we had to start was delightful though. We also went to Georgia's Home Cooking, food was good but go with a big appetite, the portions are massive. Actually one of the nicest meals we had was at the Kokalas Monday evening BBQ night. Rula asked if we would like to come and I initially declined thinking it was going to be a tacky night of smashing plates and greek dancing. On our way back from the beach the BBQ was being prepared by Nikos and Frank and they offered a taster of lamb chops which were absolutely delicious so we decided to go after all. Great night and there was no dancing and plate smashing, I'm pleased to say!

We hired a car from Europeo, very efficient, good standard of car (Picanto) and at 115€ for the week was a bit cheaper than a return taxi trip to and from the airport. It also meant we had the car for a couple of trips we took (Rethymnon, Chania and Souda Bay war memorial).

Also be aware that a lot of local places do not take cards (I am guessing it's because of the state of their economy).

All in all I would highly recommend Georgioupolis for a relaxed holiday (although I guess it would get somewhat busier later in the season) and would definately go back to Kokalas Resort (which is something we rarely do).

I hope this little trip report helps others thinking of going to Georgioupolis and I thank all those who answered my many questions I asked prior to our trip.

As the title says, this holiday was just what we wanted.

Room Tip: 301, nice balcony and centrally located.

Once again we had a fantastic time at the Kokalas resort in the village of Georgioupolis in Crete. The rooms are well equiped and kept spotlessly clean by the excellent cleaning staff.
The barbecue and Cretan Evenings are great events (and excellent value for money). We are always very well looked after by everybody working at the resort, but the hospitality and friendship given from the Kokalakis family and their staff is the key reason we return year after year. We travel to many destinations each year but the visit to Kokalas resort is always the highlight of our holiday calendar.

We had 2 great weeks in August 2012. The owners & staff were friendly & helpful. Rooms spacious & spotlessly clean. Georgioupoli is a great place. The pool is very clean and there were always plenty of sunbeds. The beach is good, loved the Blue Boat beach bar. We had fantastic food at the Kokalas and every taverna we visited, and there are many in the resort to choose from. The bus stop is just a few minutes away and a great, regular service goes to Chania and Rethymnon. There is a road train in the resort with loads of different excursions, we especially enjoyed the trip to Kournas lake. The best holiday we've had, just booked again for 2014!

The barbacue night and greek night was really good, great food and good entertainment. Georgeoplolis is a really nice resort, good restaurants. We hope to go back in 2013.
