“Lovely apartments in a great location”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

We have just returned from a weeks' stay at the Sunlight apartments. If you are after well kept, clean apartments in a fantastic location then you should definitely consider staying here. We were a party of 8 and I stayed in a studio apartment on the first floor with my two children. The apartment was nicely decorated with a lovely view of the sea from our balcony. They were kept spotlessly clean with the cleaner coming in 6 days a week. The people that run it are very friendly and the restaurant provides very nice food at good prices eg at lunchtime for example you can get a toasted sandwich for just 2 euros - it's lovely to sit there too looking out at the sea. The apartments are literally across the road from the lovely beach and we found this a big plus - great if you need to pop back during the day, which we always did. Also very near to the town square so we couldn't fault the location.

A few niggles which may or may not bother some people. The beds were the hardest beds I've ever slept on-maybe this is the case in most places in Crete, I don't know. Our room was also very light at night-time due to the thin curtains and street lights right outside - personal preference but I do like a dark room. The shower was not attached to the wall and it was impossible to shower without soaking most of the bathroom floor. It was, however, a good enough shower and we always had hot water whatever time of day it was. The kitchen area is tiny. But having looked at other pics of other places, this looks usual - and the fridge worked well, kept our water etc very cold! Air-con is 45 euros, at least in August it is. This took a chunk of our money straight away but we had no choice but to pay it - at least it worked well, so well that we had to turn if off sometimes cos the room got too cold! Finally, we had booked 3 sea-view rooms and only got two (the rooms on the ground floor do not have a view). We don't know if this is the fault of the Sunlight or the travel agent though - just be aware there are some rooms without a view.

Overall I would definitely recommend the Sunlight apartments. Georgioupolis is a gorgeous little town and we had a lovely time, we have even talked about returning one day, something we wouldn't normally do.

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms do not have a view of the sea, all the others would be fine

We just got back from Crete after a week at Sunlight apartments. To be honest I am surprised there are not more reviews on this place. I hope that more review it so the apartments get even more business.
We had a 1 bedroom apartment and it was really well maintained and clean. The balcony was on the side of the hotel so we could see the sea, but also the mountains behind us. The first morning we walked out onto the balcony was a bit of wow with the lovely view.

The reasons I have not given it five stars are because 1. The kitchen area was not very adequate, no toaster and very small area to work on. 2. you have to hold the shower in your hand, it's not hooked to the wall. 3. the bed was very very hard but I have heard this is normal in Greece.

We booked through Travel Republic and got a good deal compared to other hotels but then we did have to pay 45 euros extra for the week for air conditioning which you need in August.
Not sure if it was travel republic or the apartments but we booked a sea view and my dad who was in a studio didn't get this as he was on the ground floor.

The manager is a lovely man who looked like he felt bad when he said he would have to charge us 25 euros for a room for late check out. We fully expected to pay for it and thought it was very reasonable. He clearly wants to do everything to make sure his guests are happy.

anyway, not perfect but it's in a perfect spot and I would recommend staying there at the price. It's across the road from the beach and a 2 minute walk from the beautiful town of Georgioupolis. The food in the restaurant is nice too.

After booking into the fereniki hotel we was absolutely gutted as it was terrible. We went to see Makis at sunlight hotel and he was fantastic, so helpful and made a room available as soon as he could. Such a nice man who couldn't do enough for us. Apartment was spot on, very clean brilliant location just over the road from the beach. The taverna is also brilliant the food was delicious. This holiday was also our wedding/honeymoon and we could not of been happier with everything from our room to Makis and all the local people who were very welcoming. We will definitely be staying here again soon, the best holiday we have had!!!

Room Tip: If your booking in a group the ground floor all share a balcony, we loved this as we have a small ch...

Lovely clean apartments. Very nice owner, would stay there again. Beautiful view of the sea from our balcony. Great location! Beach across the small road from the apartments. Views of the mountains to the other side too. 5 minutes walk to the main village, with all it's lovely taverna's, shops and lovely old streets. Spotless apartments with a kettle, fridge and cooking facilities if required. The apartments have a lovely restaurant too.

Room Tip: Wouldn't want the ground floor as there is no view from there

This was our second time staying at The Sunlight Apartments Georgioupolis. The apartments and taverna are located directly opposite the beautiful sandy beach, there are ramps (rather than steps) to walk down onto the beach and upto the apartments. My Mum, who I was travelling with, has mobility difficulties, and although there is no lift in the apartments (it only has 2 floors) the ramps made all the difference to her being able to get down onto the beach.

Makis, the owner of the apartments and the taverna, makes you feel very welcome and will endeavour to assist you in any way possible. We arranged our accomodation directly through Makis as British tour operators have now pulled out of the village. His prices were excellent and we stayed there on a half board basis. You can contact him via his website http://www.sunlight-geo.gr/main/

Don't let the fact that British tour operators have pulled out of the village put you off! They are all opting for the large all inclusive resorts which are some way out of the village of Georgioupolis. The village is small but has a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops. The food at the Sunlight taverna was excellent. Despite our trip being towards the end of the season (25th Sept - 2nd Oct) we were able to sit outside to eat almost every evening and Makis and his staff were happy to accommodate this.

We used the Sunlight Apartments sunbeds and were able to order drinks to be brought down to us on the beach, it really was bliss!

We stayed in room 24, a studio on the 2nd floor with twin beds, a dining table and chairs, kitchenette with hob, fridge and kettle, sofa and bathroom. The view from our balcony was both of the sea and the beautiful mountains. Even the studios on the lower floor have balconies with a sea view. The room was kept spotlessly clean by the cleaners and our sheets and towels were changed 3 times despite only being there for a week.

We flew using Monarch from Manchester to Chania. Our Taxi from Chania airport was arranged through Georgioupolis Taxi http://www.georgioupolis-taxi.com/en.html who again, gave us excellent service. It was 65 Euros each way for 4 of us and they were waiting for us in the airport when we arrived and arrived early to take us back to the airport.

Air conditioning is available in the rooms but I think the price of this varies depending on whether you are there in high season.

This was my 6th visit to Crete, my 4th to Georgioupolis and my 2nd to the Sunlight Apartments. I can honestly say that you would find it extremely difficult to match this accommodation in the village. After my 1st holiday at the Sunlight, I thought the excellent holiday we had there may have been down to luck. But after my 2nd holiday there, I know it is down to choosing wisely! If you want a relaxing holiday, with good food in beautiful surroundings, this place is for you.

Room Tip: The staff there will be happy to show you the rooms that they have available if you ask.

Brilliant location, across the very qiuet road from the beach. Very friendly owner Makis, who was lovely and obliging. Nothing is too much trouble.
We stayed in a ground floor 1 bedroom apartment. Bedroom spacious, living area a bit small when used as bedroom for children as no bedside tables or storage in there, however managed to get kids clothes in our room. Slightly overlooked from road, but that is usual on ground floor and this is a quiet resort. There is a large shared terrace with table and chairs.
Bedding and towels changed very often and room cleaned almost every day.
Have stayed in Georgioupolis several times before as it is a lovely fishing village with plenty of good tavernas serving excellent food and reasonably priced.
Would stay here again. I have rated the room average, but I think the rooms on higher levels would be preferred.

We stayed here 7 years ago and it was just as good as last time. Location is excellent as 10m from the beach - you don't even have to leave the beach to get a drink as the waiter from the apartments' own taverna will bring you any food/drink you require. 5euros for 2 sunbeds/parasol and 2 drinks per day was very good value. 5 mins to nearest supermarket and 10 mins to local village square where there are many bars, tavernas, local craft shops and supermarkets.

Even though the apartments are listed as self-catering, we boarded on breakfast basis and that included free air-con in the room, otherwise payable locally. Excellent value! The room was cleaned daily, even at the weekends and fresh towels/sheets twice weekly. You wouldn't be able to cook a 3-course meal but was fine for snacks. It is run as a family business as the owner's sister-in-law is the cleaner and the Sunlight Cafe up in the village square is run by the owner's brother. The taverna attached to the apartments provides food and refreshment from 8am til late and was cheap with very large portions so excellent value!

The apartment's are located away from the main village square which means that noise was no problem. It is a lovely quaint little fishing village and the beach is very long and shallow.(3 sunbeds deep)

The owner was extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. He even phoned the car hire company for us to help book a car. There are satellite tv's in the rooms but choice of channels were limited.

We booked this independently - what a shame no travel companies are dealing with them as we thought it was brilliant! Bear in mind that you would have to arrange your own transfer from airport.

A week was not long enough and we will definitely stay here again!!

Room Tip: no tip as all rooms have sea views
