“Loved it!”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

We we're so happy the Roel actually waits for the train to come in to Bayeux and didn't make us feel bad for not staying overnight in Normandy like some other tour companies did. He was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the sights and boy did we get to see everything in our full day tour. We were with 5 other people, all from the USA and we all got along great! We saw Omaha, and Gold beaches, Pont DuHoc, the American and German Cemetery, stopped for a great lunch at a small cafe and were back in town for a glass of wine before the train. Roel was very informative and let you have your time for pictures and to explore yourself. I would highly recommend this tour again!!!! (if there was one slight drawback is that Roel doesn't seem to like getting too many questions thrown his way, he'd rather you sit there and listen to him talk so he doesn't have to repeat himself).

“Victory Tours - Roel”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

I have been hesitant to post this and have held off of doing so for more than a year, but must write.

I thought that we were in for a real treat having read the reviews about the tour, however, Roel must have been having a bad day. He was curt, abrasive, intolerant with an inflated ego. He goes on and on about not wanting to repeat himself. I understand that somewhat, but God forbid if you miss something he says as he will make a big deal out of saying it again. We, two of us, were in a group of 6 with four others from different parts of the world; British, European and Americans. We all left the tour wishing we had gone with someone else.

I asked a naive question and he belittled me and kept it up incessantly. This happened to the others in the group.

Re: lunch....mediocre sandwiches from "his cousin" in Arromanche. Despite writing down the order, they got it wrong. Don't bother. He must get a percentage.

Lastly, a terrible driver. Passing two cars at a time was hair raising. Some of us wanted to get on another tour bus. I am not kidding.

I am being brutally honest here. Maybe you'll catch him on a good day. We did not. I think he has the ability to be nice and more civil, but does not care to be.

He may know somethings about history, but spoils it with his demeaning.

Bon chance.

“Amazing and Memorable Day”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

My fiancé and I traveled to Paris for a week in February and while making our itinerary, decided we absolutely had to get out Normandy. I looked online for guided day tours (we had done one of these during a trip to Barcelona in the Pyrenees Mountains and really enjoyed it) and came across some great reviews for Victory Tours – so we decided to book a Full day tour with Roel. We were delighted when we arrived in Bayeux to find out that we were going to be the only ones taking the tour that day (it was really cold that day and others had cancelled). So we basically had our own private tour and could ask as many questions as we wanted, go as slow/fast as we wanted, etc. We were able to visit and learn about a number of historic sites including Arromanches Harbor, German bunkers, the US War Cemetery, Pont du Hoc, and of course, Omaha Beach. The history and sites themselves are nothing short of amazing and Roel is a great guide with tons of knowledge and stories from Veterans, which makes it even better. Even though it was freezing, this was by far our best and most memorable day in France. I would recommend the full day tour to anyone!

“Best Normandy guide”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

Roel is fantastic. His knowledge and life experience make for a great tour. We decided to do the full day tour and we were so glad that we did. We saw everything we needed to see and Roel gave us plenty of time to stop and experience the various sites. As it was winter, most of the stores/restaurants had closed for the season, so Roel packed us a tasty picnic lunch of sandwiches, with drinks and chips. Nothing fancy but we weren't looking for fancy. This gave us more time on the tour so that we even had time to visit the German soldier's war memorial. Roel is one of the best tour guides because he has been doing this for so long and has met many veterans who were actually in the battle. He blends a good mix of historic fact with the witness accounts from those that he has met and interviewed. I would recommend his full-day tour.

“Great tour”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

Eight of us (Americans) contracted with Roel for a day tour in early January of 2013. We thoroughly enjoyed our day with him. He was quite knowledgable, humorous, and all of us enjoyed our day and would highly recommend him. He picked us up at the train station in Bayeux (charming town) and took us the major sites, as outlined on his website. Pre trip, he was very communicative via email, outlined all of the instructions for us relative to coming to Bayeax via train from Paris, and was spot on regarding trip cost, weather conditions, and everything else. We'd highly recommend Roel for a day trip or a multi-day trip. We would certainly use him again if given the opportunity.

A couple of notes that might be helpful: Dress warm in the winter months - the beaches are windy and it can be muddy, so wear boots or shoes you don't mind getting dirty. In the winter, some of the normal attractions in town may be closed, so use the bathrooms outside the train station which Roel will direct you to. Watch the Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan pre-trip, particularly the Longest Day. Roel advised us to do this pre trip and it gave us a great perspective on what we were seeing. If you have time after the tour, stop at the cafe in Bayeux where Roel will drop you off. They have great hot chocolate. We warmed up at the cafe and made the short walk to the train station, walking by a beautiful cathedral. I wish we would have made time to stop and see it, but it's a full day as is. We did this in a day trip from Paris and would easy to navigate the trains and well worth it.
