If you end up choosing this hotel, you are clearly aiming out of the beaten path and, even more clearly, willing to put up with a lot.
It is likely you will be picked up by a free shuttle service from the ferry (3 km from hotel), but try to confirm your need for a pick up in advance by email.
Unfortunately, we encountered strange attitudes of the hotel personnel, bordering rudeness, especially the afternoon receptionist. On one occasion, I returned early to the hotel and wanted to take a shower, but my absent partner had our key. I asked the room to be opened for me. I was advised (literaly) to ”take a walk”. I had to sit down in front of the room and wait for my partner, in the state I happened to be there and then (sweaty and tired). We talked to other guests that shared our quite similar experiences and had a few laughs.
Book through internet, as the hotel will just cancel you on the phone. Also, dont phone them with your questions from somewhere on the island, just write down a number of taxi service asap.
Hygiene of the room was the worst I ever encountered. A glass covered with "disinfected for your protection" sign had 0.5 cm of someone else's toothpaste leftovers inside (etc.)! Perhaps bring a small disinfection spray with you. Towels and linen stay unchanged for days, same with stingy and cheap selection of soap and shampoo. I wonder if there is lack of fresh water on the island, however. I do not mind keeping the same towel for two-three days for a greener planet, but linen was all sweaty. Was changed once during our stay, which was more than one week.
The room had a fridge with no freezer compartment. The fridge seemed to work only a bit, but we apprecited the option. The TV reception was unstable and particularly bad in the evenings, the only exception being some quite exotic Eastern European stations with languages we did not understand – anyhow, bring books to read! There is a good, working airconditioning device, not even particularly loud (but bring airplugs just in case), which allowes temperature adjustment. We appreciated this tremendously. Even more so, surprisingly fast and free working wi-fi, but for reception you need to sit in the attached restaurant, as no wi-fi is to be found in the rooms (but hey! Free wi fi!). Toilet paper is 2 layered and …, so evalute buying your own. You will find 3 layered toilet paper in common areas and toilets of the hotel (near dinning area).
On the common dinning terrace, you will be met by army of wasps. I have no idea why they dont set out traps for them, as they are a big bother for many guests, as soon as they open the tiniest smelly thing, but stay and eat inside!
Breakfast gets quite boring after 3 days, but you can probably bring some other food to keep it interesting. Many guests fight over croissants, which are served in small amounts and offered rarely, so they are ”the item” and some guests would take large amounts to put on their table as a winning trophy. Take my advice: stay away from croissants, they are not worth it at all. There is tea (!), but cups are for coffee (small) and I only saw black tea for 2 days. Large variety of herb tea and green tea to choose from, though.
We liked the service of some personnel that made our stay nicer: Rosa (morning shift) at the reception, Sasa and Alan (serving us meals) and Josip (serving us drinks). There is an offer of half board, meaning you get a 3 course dinner for 10 Eur extra. We think this was good value for money, if you keep your days busy and sporty and dont always have time and energy to visit nearby restaurants (there are about 3 nearby). Note you are not obliged (!) to take your entire vacation half board: you can combine a few days with breakfast only and then switch on to have dinner as well. This we liked a lot. Unfortunately, 3 persons were serving meals, while only one person was serving drinks, which caused quite a delay in when everyone was getting their drinks – usually at the main dish, but never at first dish. The management should definitely consider allocating another person to help out with the drinks.
There is a small shop at the hotel for small necessities and basic food, a bigger shop is available (with awful service and rude personnel) 3 km away in Ubli. A private person is offering trips with a boat to a nice beach Saplun, where lunch (fresh fish and salad) is also served - highly recommended one day activity. There is a ”Flintstones” restaurant on a nearby island Mrcara (W from Pasadur) in the summer. You can reach it by rented boat or, if experienced, with kayak.
Note the bicycles the hotel rents are in an unacceptable state and most of them in need of fundamental repair (pedals falling appart, seats cannot be fastened and some of the bikes stay punctured for days).
Despite of big posters inside the hotel, where proper sea kayaks are featured on the photos, the two kayaks they have for renting are "sit on top" Tri-Yak type with very small, but severely leaking storage compartments, so bring a professional dry bag with you. Do not put any sensitive equipment in these kayaks (such as cameras) – we stopped one couple from ruining their camera. The paddles are very bad (I almost hurt my arm!), so don't plan longer trips. We desperately tried to find more proper kayaks, as we are quite experienced, but to no avail. I believe better paddles could help.
Note it is possible to put your own kayaks on the ferry from Split. We believe Lastovo has an excellent kayaking potential, provided you are at least mid-experienced level and can handle some waves and understand the risks of the weather in Adriatic sea. Note good landing beaches are scarce. The islands are very steep with sharply erroded rocks surrouding them. Swimmers, pack your swimming shoes.
Any information is very difficult to obtain, especially from the afternoon receptionist (best case you will be advised to phone somewhere yourself), so be inventive. Get a map/information in the tourist office in Ubli/Lastovo city. It took us 3-4 days to figure out the proper ferry scheduling for leaving the island, so if you are not sure about your departure, allow for some extra days. We travelled back 2 days through touristy island Korcula and Mljet. We can only hope that Lastovo will never ever become like Mljet, which is literally turned into ”a plastic golf course”. But you can of course get any tourist service you can imagine on Mljet + about 1000 bikes to rent.
Do not miss buying fresh fruit and produce if you see a stand somewhere. A woman in front of the hotel sold us one litre of very good wine for 2 Eur. But she only appeared one night.
If you want a hotel, Solitudo is your only choice in Lastovo anyway. Unfortunately, there is not much pressure for them to improve the service and I have to say I both understand it and appreciate it, as this might keep the tourist crowds away for a while. This is a harsh/uncomfortable climate for tourists to survive and I hope it stays that way. At least for a little while.
