“Wonderfully different”
Reviewed May 4, 2011

Costa D'Orsola is conveniently close to the Pontremoli exit of the autostrada which is great for travelling to and from. We based ourselves there but drove to Siena, Firenze, Lerici and other places for day trips.
The resort is very simple. It is basically a little hamlet that has been transformed into bedrooms. Each bedroom is a little self contained "house" some with a private terrace - we had the best room of all - Room D with a window overlooking the wonderful valley views together with our own private terrace.
Breakfast is a simple continental style consisting of bread, cheese, ham, jam, croissant, and various yoghurts and cereals. There is no cooked breakfast. This is served in the "bar house" which is near the sun terrace and pool area. There are outside tables too if you want to have your breakfast outside.
There is no lunch served but dinner makes up for it. A four course dinner is served every day at 8.00 pm. There is no menu - you just sit down and food appears - first a number of "antipasti" - delicious small titbits of deep fried vegetables, or stuffed peppers / tomatoes, foccaccia, home made salamis and prosciuttos to mention a few! Followed by a primo piatto of a typical regional pasta dish. After this (if you still have space in your stomach) the secondo piatto arrives - again typical regional food - we had veal, rabbit, beef among others. Then you have your dolce which can be anything from fresh fruit to delicious profiteroles in a warm chocolate sauce.
The views are magnificent, the agriturismo is very well tended.
Gianni, the manager speaks english and is very helpful together with Katia, Monica the two lovely waitresses and Piero the chef.
Thank you all for a wonderful holiday !

This stunning 4 star family-owned agriturismo in its own extensive grounds, is conveniently situated up a private road, less than a mile from the main autostrada linking La Spezia with Parma. It has been sympathetically converted from several old cottages, and now has a prestigious position overlooking the Apuan Alps. There is an array of arches, hidden corners, split levels and cobbled walkways.
There are 14 large, individually designed bedrooms, some with private terraces. There is a recreation room, swimming pool, bar/breakfast room, well-appointed dining room on different levels and a further undercover area for summer dining, which has magnificent views.
The evening meal is served at 8pm. There is no menu or choice, but course after course is cooked to perfection by the two young chefs. The antipasti are particularly superb with some unusual and delicious local delicacies. Succulent wild boar and other specialities make the variety and quality of the meals unique.
One of the staff speaks fluent English. If your Italian is up to it, everyone else is happy to chat to you. There's no need for English in the dining room; everything simply appears and you eat it! Breakfast is self-service.
Of all the places in Italy, Sicily and Sardinia which we have stayed in, this is the most traditional and unusual. No other English people stayed during the week we were there. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to all except the disabled.
Pontremoli itself is a small town with a medieval centre, and a historic castle, reached up winding, cobbled streets. There are old bridges (Pontremoli meaning trembling bridge) and an excellent market.
Costa d'Orsola is 35 mins. drive from Portovenere and the Cinque Terre. (The latter can be easily reached by taking the train from Pontremoli station and changing at La Spezia. There are mountain villages to explore and plenty of walks. If you are an opera fan, a trip not to be missed is a day at Giuseppe Verdi's birthplace and properties at Busseto. (1hr 25 mins drive) The stunning walled city of Lucca, where Puccini was born, is 1hr 10 mins away and an absolute delight.
We will definitely stay here again in the same room, E, which is quiet, has wonderful views and a huge private terrace shared with just one other bedroom. The only tiny downside is that the bathroom is rather small, and you need to ask if you would like orange juice at breakfast!

It is some years since we visited Costa d'Orsola but it stays in our memory for the fabulous views out, the meals in the terrace restaurant, especially the starters on the first night and the swifts/swallows darting into their nest, and the local character of the room and the original farm group. Great value.

My wife and I have stayed at this lodge three times over a period of 10 years from 1993-2003. The quality is consistent but the prices are going up - unfortunately. However, if you opt for half-board you'll get excellent dinners (4-5 courses) and the all-in rate is hard to beat.
The lodge is located on a hilltop next to a motorway which you can hardly see or hear from there. The view towards the Alpi Apuane is breathtaking.
