I enjoyed listening to the organist rehearse for a concert as i was shown around the Minster by a very helpful volunteer. i loved going into the old library to see ancient books. the library is only open occasionally so that was an interesting bonus. The building is amazing with its Gothic and Norman architecture and many beautiful windows and carvings

As I live in Nottingham I often take visitors to Southwell Minister. It is beautiful and I always find something new to admire. I love the chapter house with its green men and animal carving and the remains of a Roman mosaic floor are worth a look. There is also the ruined palace of the Archbishop in the grounds and the impressive Georgian Prebendal houses lining Church Street opposite the minister. After visiting the minister I usually succumb to tea and home-made cake in the refractory which I also highly recommend. The tourist information next door has an interesting display about the modern stained glass windows in the minster. It is lovely to be able to park for free for two hours in the car park opposite (although you do need to get a free ticket from the machine).

Southwell itself is a good small town/ village to take a look at. The Saracen's Head pub is where Charles II was arrested during the civil war. The Minster itself is spectacular, even when the choir is not in attendance. Take a walk round the town for a flavour of "English Shire" life.

Southwell Minster is a stunning example of church History. Restored heavily over the years it retains some wonderful examples of church architecture - the Chapter House is an absolute gem with amazing carvings (despite the damage caused during the Civil War).
The volunteers on duty were welcoming and friendly, providing an interesting insight into the life and history of this cathedral church.
