The place was recommenden by a friend. We stayed for three days and what we saw exeeded our expectations. Carol and Maisie made feel us like home. There was always time for a chat and we had lots of fun together. The rooms are spacious and spotless clean, oversized bath with hot water at any time. The excellent breakfast and dinner (on request) was served in a charming
dinning room or in the beautiful and well treated garden. Thank you for your hospitallity! We are happy to have stayed at Carter's Lodge.

My usual place was closed for the weekend and I needed a quick place. Was recommended Carter's Lodge by a friend. It's in a very convenient location right next to La Lucia Mall. The M4 is a few hundred meters away and there's easy access to Umhlanga and Durban CBD.
There's also a Virgin Fitness there too so for those who like gym work, it's very convenient. The beach is only 1km away.
The rooms are smallish but well decorated with little touches like the cotton ball/buds and scented soaps, sometimes overwhelmingly so. All the main building rooms face north, into the garden and pool. This means there is good sunshine into the rooms, but there are good curtains which block out the sun.
My only criticism is the room I was in (room 2) had a door which leads to the adjoining room 3. This resulted in quite a bit of bathroom noises from room 3 as well as TV noise and chitchat, especially with noisier neighbors. That's the one issue of converting a house into a B&B and it's not a huge issue but something to consider if one wants peace and isolation.
The parking lot is also cramped and the driveway is narrowish. I had no problems with it but when 2 cars want out, it can be an ordeal, just like home! :)
Overall,it's a nice property and good value for the location @ ZAR530 including breakfast.

Room Tip: Room 2 & 3 are joined by a door. You can hear TV, bathroom and even "bedroom" noises...

Thank you for your comments. I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Carter's Lodge, although you did have a problem with the room adjoining another room. I am sorry for that.
Unfortunately your booking was at the last moment and this was the last room available. I do have some rooms that stand completely alone and do not adjoin other rooms at all.
We do find it useful to have adjoining rooms as we can open up the door and have the two rooms interleading for families.
Noise travel is not only a problem that faces B&Bs, I have stayed in many hotels which have a similar problem. And, although we have insulated the doorway, it seems that some noise travels through other openings like bathroom windows. We will, however, endeavour to continue to look into other ways of diminishing any noise travel.
I do hope that we will see you back at Carter's Lodge and hopefully we will be able to accommodate you in one of our other free-standing rooms so that you can truly enjoy the Carter's Lodge atmosphere and hospitality.

We stayed here over xmas 2010 and had a great time. Carol and Masie looked after us so well it made a fantastic holiday. The room was big and clean, the outside area was really well presented and looked after, with a small pool, BBQ, seating that could be either outside or brought under cover in the event of storms. The food was really good, think I put on a few pounds after having a good cooked breakfast every morning for 10 days! The location is goos too, close to the shopping centre and only a few k's to the beach.

We were welcomed by Macey. A very friendly woman who showed us the way to the parking place and then to our room for two nights. After unpackig we received the directions for a very good restaurant in the neighbourhood. The next morning, after a fine breakfast in the morning sun, we asked Carol if an internet cafe was nearby. She immediately offered us to use her laptop for sending a few e-mails to Holland. This was very much appreciated by us. Very good situated, 100 m from the beach and nearby Durban. A nice place to come back. We hope to stay there again in the near future.

The wife and I stopped here for 5 weeks during the World Cup and after. I thoruoghly enjoyed my time there. Carol runs a real tight ship and manages all aspects from booking phase all the way through to check out. She's is a font of knowledge when it comes to advisisng what to do and on most occasions booked it all up for us. Here staff are her crown jewles as they make you really welcome and take a great deal of pride in what they do. Watch out for Meisie (Carol's 2nd In Command) she is bubbly, joyfull and made me laugh so much...Will miss them but will be returning..

We made Carters Lodge our base for just over a month during World Cup period. We were confident we'd made the right choice from exchange of emails prior to our stay and how right we were! After a long journey (3 flights & over 24 hours) the welcome we received was best we've ever encountered - when we were told to treat the place like home, they really meant it.
Carol and her staff made our first trip to S Africa one we'll never forget.
Service was the right balance of professional, friendly and helpful with both Carol and her main maid Meisie always going above and beyond that which a guest would expect.
Breakfasts were freshly cooked to order, rooms were light and roomy with air con, fridge and hairdryer, toiletries provided in en-suite bathroom. Room was cleaned daily and a very efficient laundry service provided at a very reasonable cost.
Honesty bar at virtually supermarket prices in guest lounge.
Owner has her own seperate apartment and garden alongside guest house, so lounge, TV, internet point, gardens, rock pool, sun loungers, patio areas, patio furniture, BBQ are exclusively for guest use.
Property is secure with a remote control gated entrance.
Large modern shopping mall opposite
Virgin Active gym also opposite
Walking distance to several restaurants and short taxi to Umhlanga where there are numerous bars and restaurants.
