“Amazing 1wk stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2011

I recently stayed here for 1 week in early January. Our trip focused on birding/herping/bugging/snorkeling and there was plenty of all of that to be found right on the resort! The rooms were cleaned daily (not that it mattered much as we only used our rooms for sleeping, showering and getting changed), and most of us had three beds for 2 people (I was in room 102). The view was amazing - large hill full of palms on one side, ocean with reef on the other - just spectacular. The staff are friendly and outgoing. The buffet food wasn't as terrible as many other reviews made it out to be. Buffet-style all day and usually the same things day after day but there is a good sized selection and I don't know of anyone who got sick from it (and the pizza 'selection' was hilarious!). The bread was definitely the best - we even took it on outings! If you are looking for something upscale and classy go to the resort next door. I highly recommend Cameleon Villas Jibacoa to anyone just looking for a relaxing place to stay or somewhere with plenty of biodiversity to be discovered.

Lots and lots of cutbacks. No lessons, no games, soups are great, food gave us little variety and wasn't plentiful at all. I had heard it was a very clean place but I did not see it where it is important to me. The Dining Room entry doors were filthy, birds walked on the tables and cutlery and did their business randomly wherever they were. It was very cool and windy so we can't comment on the snorkeling or water as we had Red Flags everyday we were there.

I had a great time. Beautiful weather, great staff, awesome snorkeling, exciting & memorable trips. Kids loved it too, they got lots of time in for themselves and the staff was very polite. If you are expecting to be pampered as in a 5 star hotel, you will probably be disappointed, but you will also be paying more and have more people around you! I would happily return to this resort.

Overall, I do not recommend staying here. I'm sure you can find a similarly laid back hotel for the same price somewhere else.

To get a beach towel, you have to put down a deposit of 10 convertible pesos. To get snorkeling gear, you have to put down a deposit of 50 convertible pesos.

Our room was number 45 and it was moldy and smelly. We asked to change our rooms and were met with a scowl and 'come back later'. When we came back later, we were told to come back the next day. Of course, the next day we were on a tour that arrived back at the hotel at 2am so didn't get the opportunity. The room was a decent size and was clean. There were ants and a cockroach and a spider but that's to be expected. They can crawl in from under the door and through the windows so you can't really help that. But the smell of the room was terrible. Another traveler we spoke with said her room smelled so bad that even the maid covered her face with a bandanna when she was cleaning and said 'some rooms smell like this', like it was a normal thing.

The food is mediocre but we expected that. We brought nature bars, nuts and chips from home to compensate.

Even though we tipped the barmen and the waitresses everyday, they still begged for stuff from us. They asked us to give them "new" shampoo etc. In Cuba, having a hotel job where you get tipped is a really good job. So I couldn't believe that they would also beg. Sometimes we would walk by someone and say 'hola' and they would respond and then would randomly ask for a peso. I felt like a walking dollar sign.

The a la carte restaurant is no better than the buffet and the service is worse. There's one guy for the entire restaurant. First he forgot my drink, then asked us what we wanted for our main and then 10mins later came back and asked us again because he forgot that too, which lead to us waiting 25mins for our main dish to arrive. He never refilled our water. And after we finished our main dish we waited for him to come back and tell us about desert but after 15mins of waiting we just left.

At the lobby bar one of barmen hit on me on the first day, which made me feel uncomfortable because I was in my bikini and I knew I'd have to see him the rest of the week. I did not go on vacation to be creeped out by the staff at the hotel.

The grounds of the hotel are nicely kept and our maid did a good job of keeping our room clean. We left things for her everyday so that probably helped too.

The pool was nice, although very cold. The ocean is warmer to swim in. The ocean is rocky but still nice.

I recommend travelers to bring snacks from home on their trip and to bring your own mug/cup that you can use to cut down on the use of the tiny plastic cups. There is no recycling in Cuba unfortunately.

The show at the hotel is terrible. It's a fashion show where women wear silly outfits in the form of lobsters, crocodiles etc that are poorly made. At other hotels, they have dance performances but here, it's just girls scantily clad, showing off terrible outfits.

The tours we booked from the Nolitours rep were great. We went for the one day Havana trip with the Tropicana show included. I'd skip the show but the day in Havana was lovely. The catamaran, Seafari tour was great and the Nature Tour where you visit the caves was great too. Another traveler who took the 25 CUC trip to Varadero said it was a waste of time. Thank god for these tours, otherwise the trip would've been a bust. There was no time to be spent on the beach and they were just taken to a shopping area where everyone sold the same thing. So if you want to go to Varadero, just get a taxi. I believe it cost 25 CUC for 6hrs there and back.

Tip: change your money at the airport when you arrive. The staff at the airport might be unwilling to tell you where the Cadeca is but be persistent and someone will eventually tell you where it is. There is a booth where you can change your money. Otherwise you'll be stuck with changing your money at the hotel with their terrible rates.

Cameleon villa jibacoa would be a nice hotel for someone who was travelling to a tropical location for the first time and was not really aware of what else is out there. It has its pros and cons. Some of its pros are that the staff are very very friendly, the snorkelling is pretty amazing and very close to the beach, you can go scuba diving for $20 a person, and it was a pretty quiet location. Now for the cons, the food is as bad as all the rumors about Cuba, however there were a few nights where it was a little better, that is except for the a la carte restauraunt which is a nice break from the buffet restauraunt, however you can only go once a week. The location is very inconvenient, the hotel is listed in Veradero, however its nowhere near Veradero, its roughly about an hours drive. This means there is no banks, shopping, restaurants for about an hours drive. Because of this MAKE SURE you bring enough cash for your trip because the hotel only converts Canadian cash into convertible pesos and they dont accept credit cards at the hotel. For anyone who gets grossed out by bugs will probably want to avoid this place because there is a small space underneath the door which allows for cochroaches to get in, you may have a few to welcome you. Just one more word of warning, we found the weather and the water pretty chilly in December compared to other locations, the water was about 15 Celsius and the air temp was maybe 25 tops. All in all this place would be good for someone only interested in diving and snorkelling with low expectations of the hotel or maybe if you got a smokin deal around $500.

We found the employees terrific, bar was great and the best was Rudy in the main lobby bar. Food was good, not too much variety but tasty. Fresh made omlettes and lots of sweets at breakfast.Lunch had homemade icecream that was to die for !!. Super service .
If you want to snorkel ( and it was our first time). Its terrific. you can go out to just your waist, see coral and feel like you are in an aquarium. Water is warm, beautiful and safe. The area has hiking tours and is safe to walk anywhere on your own. We did a few tours but next time I'd just arrange to use the locals. Ask for Eddie next door at the Cuban resort. He can arrange a car to Havana at 7 pesos per person (modern car) . We paid for the bus tour ( 51) and wouldn't do it again. We'll be back next year

My girlfriend and I had a great time at this resort. I'd recommend it to a broad swath of people, although not everyone (e.g. foodies, shopaholics, super high-end travelers) will like it.

Cleanliness: Our room was consistently spotless, and they even organized the stuff in our bathroom. The dining areas were clean as well. The grounds are generally well kept, although there are a few aging facilities here and there.

Service: Outstanding! The staff was always extremely nice, and the bartenders make delicious drinks. I couldn't get enough Spanish coffees and pina coladas.

Location: The resort is located at Playa Jibacoa, which is a small community between Havana and Veradero. The location isn't so great if you are looking for shopping or intense nightlife, but awesome if you want fun times in a gorgeous setting.

Value: This resort was one of the best travel values I've ever gotten. The food is sometimes not superb (especially if you arrive late for lunch/dinner/breakfast), but I had no problems with it. I drank the resort water with no ill effects.

Rooms: The rooms are fine. The bed was comfy. Don't leave your windows open, though--mosquitoes will come in by the dozen.

Sleep quality: Fine, as long as you watch out for the skeeters!
