Very little new development beautiful beach and great character . This end of the Algarve offers far better value than the Villamoura overbuilt and overpriced Eastern section closest to the airport along with a few very good golf courses

This little town was our roll of the dice in our 2 week vacation throughout Portugal. We were using public transportation to get there from Lisbon, which was quite a comfortable ride on the express buses. At one point we weren't sure we had made a good decision in going to Salema, it seemed rather remote along the highway. However, once we arrived in Salema we knew our decision was the BEST decision ever. This little town is of high quality in respect to the vacationing population, the fantastic beach with it's looming cliffs, the great food, small intimate bars, and very nice restaurants. The town is very small. It seems that the majority of the visitors were from Europe and Australia or new Zealand; the majority seemed to rent private beach houses. We stayed in a private hotel, the only one in town. Really a hidden treasure.

In a way I am reluctant to tell you how special this place is. It is a lot quieter than the other beaches nearer the airport and people come back year after year for the peace quiet and lovely restaurants and snack bars.

Wind was howling both days. So much so that we could not walk the beach one day. Very picturesque but whole town can be seen in 30 minutes. Restaurant people not the friendliest. Food was good
