“Exceptional service and accommodation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2011

Quinta do Scoto is well situated for visits to the area around Lisbon. An old but comprehensively updated farm property on acreage, it's close to the railway station and a convenient base for a stay of several nights. We had a car, essential to reach some of the sights in the area around Sintra, outside Lisbon.

The Sr. Miguel suite is spacious, comfortable and quiet, with French doors to the poolside patio. The bathroom was the nicest we had during this 16-day trip to Spain and Portugal, which included stays at 5* hotels. We received a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival to wash away the dust. Breakfast was outstanding, with a wide choice of meats, cheeses, cereal, fruit and farm-fresh boiled eggs. A reasonable local restaurant for dinner is about a 10-minute walk.

Hosts Tony and Penny go the extra mile to ensure guests get the most from their stay. They exchanged e-mails with me after receiving our booking to offer information and directions to the Quinta. They spent time with us on arrival to ensure we understood the local environment and the next morning recommended we visit places we would otherwise have missed.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite on the ground flr of the old barn

The accommodation is superb. Penny and Tony are such wonderful welcoming hosts with lots of information about things to do in the surrounding area. The Quinta is in the most ideal location to see Lisbon, Sintra and other great places because it is near a railway station (driving in Portugal is best avoided!). Or you can just sit back and relax and enjoy the large pool. The restaurant that we were able to walk to was very good, so much so that we went back the next night. We have done a lot of travelling and stayed in many lovely B&Bs. This was one of the very best that we have stayed in. We recommend it highly.

We stayed here with our two daughter (5 years old & 6 months old). Tony and Penny went beyond what was expected to make our stay pleasurable. We did not rent a car so they did pick us up and drop us off at the train station. We also forgot a couple of things and they let us borrow items. The rooms are gorgeous and my daughter loved all of Charlotte's animals. I would highly recommend this place to people travelling with families or as a romantic get away. It is so close to Sintra which is a must see when in Lisbon.

After various searches on the internet regarding where I should stay in Portugal, Quinta do Scoto standed out to me the most, and what a good choice it was! Tony and Penny make you feel right at home, advising you on everything you need to know about the area, and how to explore Portugal. The place itself is really breath-taking. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here and I thoroughly enjoyed every day I spent there. I will definitely be going back!

We’ve spent the past several weeks trying to find words that would convey how special Tony, Penny and Charlotte made us feels as guests at the Quinta do Scoto. We’ve finally come to realize that our struggle reflects the fact that virtually everyone else who has written about their experience has conveyed a similar feeling. Thus we’ve concluded that the Ross family – Penny, Tony, Charlotte and Izzy -- have an unaffected flair for making you feel like you’re a special guest from the moment you arrive.

But that is only the beginning. All of the comments about the spaciousness and comfort of the rooms reflect our experience as well. Indeed, our sleeping room was larger than our living room at home! While many visitors to Portugal seem to lament the uncomfortable beds they encounter, ours was on a par with our expensive mattress at home. The bathroom’s amenities (loved the oversize shower head that really gives you a soaking) were well thought out. Even though we were there during a cooler period, the grounds were lovely and inviting. While we did not try it, Tony assured that the beautiful pool was comfortably swimmable even at that time of year.

Breakfasts were wonderful treats, enhanced by wonderful conversations and guidance on planning each day's activities.Tony and Penny introduced us to the delightful wines of the Alentejano region, which have now become regular pours in our home. The walks to the local train station and the nearby restaurants, were only mini-adventures, but with frequent, fast service to Lisbon and to Sintra in the case of the former, and excellent, inexpensive food and wines in the case of the latter. On the weekend, they willingly drove us to the larger local station where rail service was more frequent. With their encouragement, we spent wonderful days in Sintra and Obidos, which we might not have attempted had we based in Lisbon.

What they are undertaking in the restoration of the property is awesome. Be sure to read the recount of their adventures in trying to save this wonderful place. Even better, ask them to give you an oral history of their undertaking. More than anything, it will tell you so much about who these wonderful people are, and why their love and passion for the place shows through in your experience of them and of their adopted home. If you’re like us, you’ll leave with the feeling that you’ve made new, lasting friends who you hope you’ll have the privilege of seeing again very soon.

We came back to Quinta do Scoto for a short break having stayed there before
earlier in the year. Fortunately for us this was whilst most of the UK was
under snow. Despite a lot of rain in Portugal we managed to visit many of
historic Sintra's attractions, Quinta Regaleira being our favourite; it is
just quite magical. Coming back to the Quinta was always welcoming though as
Penny, Tony and Charlotte seemed to have thought of many things that made it
special. Toasted feet from the underfloor heating, a soothing glass of wine
from the bottle left for us to enjoy, beer and soft drinks, biscuits and
fruit from the complementary mini bar. The suites are very spacious and have
high ceilings and lovely bathrooms with fluffy towels so it was home from
home for us. The suites do not have televisions which for us was a welcome change
and we could enjoy each other and books to read and use the laptop that was
available for us to use with WiFi in the Suite.

The local restaurants are within walking distance and provide typical
Portuguese fare at prices you won't believe, even the wine is inexpensive at
under 5 euros for a litre, drawn from the barrel. You could do without lunch
as breakfast was a wealth of traditional fare but best of all you go for
this whenever you wish and there is no time limit, you can just wake up
naturally from the comfortable beds. The Quinta represents a slice of real
Portugal away from the tourist traps yet centrally located with a good train
service and convenient to get to so many attractions including Lisbon. We
just love this place!

Booked the Quinta through Trip Advisor and didn't really know what to expect. Although the pictures look very nice they don't really do justice to the location, buildings and of course the owners.
The accomodation is well set up and the decor fantastic. Tony & Penney , the owners have a fantastic story and the results they have acheived are truly wonderful. They are extremely freindly and gave us a very warm welcome and lots of interesting stories about the area and where to go.
So in short - great accomodation good location for local retaurants, good access into Lisbon ..
Highly recommended and if you go give Izzy a pat from us!
