This Ritz-Carlton resort has all one need. There are very helpful people, 4 restaurants, bar, wellness and beautiful well furnished rooms. The most amazing thing is definitely it's surrounding, beautiful nature and calm peace. Just do not forget to leave the resort and see the countryside, otherwise you will be like a bird in a golden cage. Worth visiting.

Wow, this property really impresses the senses! The location on hundreds of acres with an ancient monastery, beautiful views, luxurious rooms and stunning fresh florals throughout... But for me, executive Chef Joao and Chef Pedro, plus the whole food and beverage team, namely Acacio Pedro and Aaron are really dedicated to their craft and it showed in every way! Restaurant Arola, is a terrific start into this food extravaganza with it's modern look and incredible tapas style dishes. It was an endless array of tasty morsels of traditional and modern plates with flavourful twists. But for me, the piece de resistance was Midori. As the intrepid diner, I decided to be put into the hands of Chef Pedro and his amazing creations. In turn, my dining experience became otherworldly! Yes, it is rated as one of Portugal's best Japanese restaurants, but you will never know that until you try! This was truly one of my favourite food experiences ever, anywhere. The salmon sashimi with truffle oil and crushed wasabi pea dust was mouth watering. Scallop sashimi with mango and basil and the tuna nigiri with foie gras and moscatel roe was unbelievable. My dessert, foie gras nigiri with melted chocolate and moscatel syrup, wow incredible!!! Makes me want to go straight back to the Penha Longa!

Spent four nights at Penha Longa in August and really loved it. We booked a deluxe room via Amex platinum fine hotels and resorts program, and got a free night, which was a real bonus. The hotel did match the images posted on the hotel website. I particularly liked the bedroom layout, which was original and made good use of space. Marble bathroom really pretty, bright and spacious. There’s a large safe in the cupboard, that held all essentials, plus laptop and camera. We had no issues with internet and as we we’re Marriott gold it was free. The balcony was facing the front of hotel, had very pretty views of the hills and the monastery. People have mentioned it’s windy by night, it was, but it was a lovely warm breeze in August.

We were given two beds on arrival, when we thought we’d booked a king, and Claudia, who showed us to our room, immediately had the beds pushed together, furniture rearranged and bedding changed by the time we’d had lunch by the pool. This was an efficient start and this attentive level of service remained constant throughout our trip.

Décor in the hotel lovely, varied pictures along the corridors, and gorgeous fresh flowers in lots of tall vases in reception, modern in style and stunning. There are decorative table displays around the hotel, tied books, candlesticks and dried flowers, which was such a nice touch. It just had a nice feel about the place - relaxed and unpretentious.

During our stay we had one meal at Midori, (Sushi) – great meal, stylish restaurant, beautiful presentation of food and Telma gave 6* service. I’m British and would rarely give anyone top marks but she got it. She made our trip truly special by something extra she did for us.

We had two meals at Arola, the Portuguese tapas restaurant. We liked it so much when we rebooked we were promised a different meal if we went for the chef’s tapas selection again. Eduardo and Izz remembered what we’d eaten first time round, and ensured we had an alternative selection. It was just as wonderful the second time. The ambience was lovely, clean and modern with a DJ playing music in the background (but at a low volume which didn’t in anyway distract from the conversation). I’d eat there again in heartbeat.

We didn’t use the gym, spa, pool, health club, or golf course so can’t rate these facilities. They all looked nice, but will leave that job to others. View of the golf course and hills from the pool was really scenic.

I spend a lot of time working in hotels and it is the staff on site which to me really makes this hotel stand out. They were genuinely friendly, very helpful and not working just for tips. Several of them seemed to ooze a passion for their roles and the hotel itself. They clearly liked their jobs and working there, and this enthusiasm shone through. They were quick to learn who you were and very accommodating. 5*

The negatives and these are minor:

It would be nice if the Nespresso coffee pods in the room (even if it was just two of them were free) and then you paid for additional. There is free filter coffee outside the Italian restaurant to take away.

Food labeling – I wish all the cheeses and meats had been labeled in the breakfast buffet, so I could have known what I was eating. Food was good and it would have been nice to know all the names, not just some.

There are a number of walking trails on site which we enjoyed. They are not brilliantly labeled at present – take your hotel map to give you a sense of direction! I understood how one reviewer got lost.

My only issue during our stay, (which was during school holidays), and this is not in any way the fault of the hotel – there were a lot of children staying. I did feel the hotel were doing what they could to manage this. Breakfast was split into two restaurants (with and without children!) and they were laying on children’s clubs and activities to entertain the toddlers. Suspect once the kids are back at school this problem solves itself!

If you don’t have a car, you’d be kind of stuck at the hotel and it seems a shame considering this hotels proximity to the beautiful town of Sintra, packed with shops, restaurants, castles, houses, gardens and palaces, as well as the nearby area beaches, coastal fishing towns and stunning scenery. I had no idea there was so much to do in such a small locality. Driving was fine. We were 10 mins drive from Sintra, (parking meters readily available on the roads in town - Euro coins needed, and we saw several traffic wardens!).

Whilst the food is excellent at the hotel it isn’t cheap, (nor are the drinks or mini bar prices) but there are loads of restaurants in the town and shops (where you can stock up on supplies), and also places in Sao Pedro de Penafferim, just a short 5 min drive from the hotel en route to Sintra. It’s about a 10 - 15 min drive down to Cascais and Estoril. (A5 is a toll road). Roads around Sintra and through the hills are in places extremely narrow (get a small car!).

We bought the park pass that entitled us to visit 5 of the main Sintra sites for 32 euros each (Moorish Castle, Sintra National Palace, Pena National Palace, Monserrate Park & Palace, Capuchos Convent). We also did the Quinta da Regaleria with the famous 8 level spiral staircase in the grounds (walking distance from Sintra). We always managed to get a parking space and it was peak season, but they also run a bus service around the town to all these sites for anyone not wishing to drive. It was incredibly organized. We had planned to relax on our trip but there was so much to do, there didn’t seem time! We had meant to eat out more locally, but after a days walking in extremely hot temperatures we went back to the hotel exhausted where we knew the food was great and we could both relax with a drink.

We were told by several that ‘Piriquita’ bakery in Sintra is the best place to buy Portuguese pastries – and a local pastry called “Travesseiros”. These were delicious along with the custard tarts but not good for the waistline. A visit highly recommended.

A great trip, a lovely hotel and would have been very happy to stay there for longer!

Room Tip: The only odd thing was the hotel layout, if you weren’t in the main wing, was you had to walk to the...

My husband and I plus 17 year old son and his mate stayed here for 10 days in August 2013. WE ha an excellent time. the hotel has great facilities and in not far from beaches, good restaurants and interesting activities.

Sintra was fabulous, we walked to the Moorish castle, what an experience, the boys did the canopy adventure and we all did the Segway experience (what a nice man Vasco is).

This is as you can Sean up to date entry on this hotel which is totally excellent the staff are professional and helpful, the facilities excellent food great cannot be faulted but comes with the price tag.
Both Italian restaurant that will cook off menu Portuguese traditional food is great the japanese restaurant is good quality but a little main stream, I would also recommend the golf course restaurant Arula as the quality of food excellent
Unfortunately the quality of the golf course is pretty shocking, this is a fantastic layout of a course which the course management have turned into a swamp shocking fairways and tees greens acceptable.
I would like to thank the staff at Penha Longha as excellent

Thank you

Room Tip: All rooms pretty good

The service was good. The staff was very patient in answering my questions. Wifi must be paid for every 24 hours, and the log on process is inconvenient if you have lots of work to get done. The food is good, tried Midori, the Japanese style restaurant, the atmosphere was hip/modern but the sushi was only okay, udon noodle dish got boring after few bites. I am from Seattle, -lots of good sushi around there so you could say I am spoiled. The hotel’s terrible if you enjoy exploring outside and experiencing Portuguese culture. I saw the single front gate as big inconvenience, you must have a car or you will have to take a taxi everywhere. I wish this hotel was nearer to Sintra because the resort grounds are only really entertaining if you golf. The fit and finish of the room (and parts of the hotel) is poor. For instance the glass doors in the bathroom did not shut completely, there were stains on the carpet and furniture, and it seemed like only one elevator worked in the area of the hotel I was staying in, not to mention the carpets near that elevator didn’t look vacuumed.

The Penha Longa totes its self as a five star establishment, but when considering all of the above my experience totals out at around three stars.

In conclusion, If you golf I would recommend spending a day on the course and maybe then go check out one of the restaurants for dinner. Instead of staying at the hotel, I would recommend finding a place in Sintra’s historic district, there are at least one would be closer to Sintra’s palaces, gardens and many other attractions.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms ending in 01-30, that are higher than the ground floor. From the lobby you have to walk...

I have been looking forward to this trip for months and am so disappointed. The wind is howling, spa services unavailable, services lukewarm. Hotel itself is very nice. Conference rooms are dark and dingy. Local transport by cab only which makes it difficult to get around.
