A wonderful afternoon adventure winding our way along the mangrove lined river. Just 3 of us with our personal guide, Alejandro. Knowledgable in all things flora and fauna. He was very easy to communicate with and he bent over backwards to ensure we had a memorable experience. We absolutely did. He got us up close and personal with Flamingoes and Brown Pelicans alike. He educated us to the various birds and marine life in the area.
Simply put..., our time with Alejandro was one our most enjoyable experiences and was a great value for the money spent.

We highly recommend this adventure

My wife and I had a very relaxing and fruitful bird photography trip with Rio Lagartos Adventures in the first week of Jan 2020. We are new birders and enjoy it at a slow pace for taking photos. Communications with Diego, the owner was fast and responsive. He provided useful information and advice for my trip planning. We have booked 5 days of morning 4-hour photography trip and stayed at one of their three basic but functional rooms.
According to weather forecast of possible strong wind and rain towards weekend, Diego suggested to have 3 boat trips then 2 land trips. The weather of the first 2 morning boat trips was very good with prefect morning magic light and little wind for taking photos of the birds. Boat ride within the lagoon and mangrove is short and comfortable. Andrea is a very knowledgeable guide and able to position the boat for good shot. We saw flamingos, pelicans, ibis, egrets, herons, frigate birds, osprey, terns, ... and fresh water crocodile. Wind picked up on the 3rd day and we had to abort at the half of the boat trip. Diego was very flexible in arranging a 2-hour land trip in the late afternoon which was equally enjoyable. Together with the 4th and 5th days, it was nice to have experience change to scrubland and watch different birds, falcons, hawks, vultures, motmots, pgymy owls, woodpeckers, warblers, ... etc.
Their photography trip is private tour where you don't need to share the boat or car with others. You are in command of the pace to fit your style. Their boats are good for the shallow lagoon and mangroves. The 4x4 pick up trick is good for the rugged road/path into the scrubland.
We love their restaurant which is a perfect place to relax after the trip. Besides the delicious food they serve, the sunset view there is said to be the best in Rio Lagartos. Hummingbirds are attracted to the feeders from morning to evening which is great for watching and practising your photo shooting. We highly recommend to bird with them for several days and enjoy the friendly and peaceful village.

Our trip today with Alejandro as our guide was simply amazing. His command of English and knowledge of the bird species and habitat was impressive. I would recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys bird watching and experiencing nature first-hand. One of the highlights of our vacation to Mexico. We will be back!!!

Andrea was a great guide on a 3 hr early morning bird-watching tour in December I took with my husband. We especially sought out Diego and family for their expertise and knowledge. Lots of bird life (including of course soft morning light on some flamingos) in the area. Andrea was very knowledgeable, a good spotter of interesting species, sensitive to wildlife as well as responsive to our own interests and photography (eg positioning the boat for good lighting). One of our favourite places in retrospect from recent trips, would have liked to do another tour. Perhaps expensive for 2 people, but recommended in any case; for a larger group excellent value. We did the two hour eco-tour with our young and enthusiastic guide Carlos. The trip was amazing. We saw flamingo's four meters from the boat, since it wasn't breeding season. We saw a crocodile and alot of birds and raccoons. Carlos knows alot about the animals and the area and tells with pleasure everything you want to learn. We even stopped for a while in the mangrove for explanation about the mangrove and the live in between the roots. At the end at Las coloradas we did the "Mayan bath" which was quite nice. You can find out for yourself what this includes ;) We would advise everyone who visits Rio lagartos to take a tour in this beautiful area. Ps: the restaurant above Rio lagartos is amazing as well, fresh fish<3
